Eight operators, three coasts and the préfet maritime's beach plans that decide where a board may leave the sand

Last updated:

Four bases in the south, two in Balagne, one near Ajaccio, one on wheels

Eight operators on the island will put you on an eFoil, and the map of them is lopsided. Two work the south east, at Pinarello and at Santa Giulia below Porto-Vecchio. Two more share the gulf of Propriano on the south west coast. JPS Aventure covers the golfe de Lava outside Ajaccio, and Calvi and L'Île-Rousse each have one in Balagne. The eighth, Location Foil Corse, has no beach of its own and drives its boards to you.

Our eFoil France guide gives the island a few paragraphs among the other French coasts. Corsica needs more room than that. Each stretch of sand answers to its own beach plan, the wind that flattens one coast roughs up the other, and a board you bring yourself raises questions a rented one never does.

The plans are all signed in Toulon, by the préfet maritime de la Méditerranée, and they draw the bathing zones, the boat channels and the zones where engines are banned around the island. Each plan carries an arrêté number and a date, and its rules bind once the buoys are laid.

The south east: Pinarello bay, Santa Giulia and the Bonifacio gap

Pinarello bay and its Flite School partner

Fifteen km north of Porto-Vecchio, the Société Nautique de Pinarello teaches eFoil in its bay in partnership with Flite School, and Fliteboard's own South Corsica page names the school. An hour costs €110, three hours €315 and five hours €510. Two people sharing one board pay €140. The bay sits under the Zonza plan, arrêté 176/2024 of 31 May 2024, with channels at Arasu, Pinarello, Cataro and Vardiola and a no motor zone 300 m deep off Pinarello beach. A second club, Sporsica, lists its eFoil as unavailable for now, so it stays off this page until that changes.

Porto-Vecchio and Santa Giulia

Extrême Sud Aventure rents at Santa Giulia for €100 per half hour and €180 per hour. Its page shows no lesson, brand or minimum age, so a first timer should ask before booking. The Porto-Vecchio plan, arrêté 135/2026 of 13 May 2026, counts fourteen access channels of 300 by 30 m, from Santa Giulia and Palombaggia to Stagnolu, with no motor zones at Santa Giulia, Folacca, Palombaggia and Carataggio. The board on offer at Palombaggia is a JetSurf, which has no foil, and we found no eFoil base on that sand.

North of the gulf, the Lecci plan (41/2025 of 14 March 2025) gives Saint-Cyprien a channel for towed sports. Article 9.5.1.1 of the frame arrêté closes such a channel to craft that are not towing, and an eFoil tows nothing.

Bonifacio: no base in town, a strict plan offshore

Bonifacio itself has no eFoil base, and Bonifacio Windsurf teaches wind sports only. Location Foil Corse does deliver there, bringing a Fliteboard Jet with its covered propeller to a villa, hotel, holiday home or boat. The Bonifacio plan, arrêté 34/2025 of 28 February 2025, was taken in the interest of the nature reserve and lines the coast with no motor zones, from Rondinara and Sant'Amanza to the Cavallo and Lavezzi coves.

The Sant'Amanza mooring field has a text of its own, arrêté 260/2026 of 3 July 2026. Article 3 shuts the field to windsurf boards and motor craft, article 4 caps speed at 5 knots, and article 6 lets craft launched from a yacht cross it only to leave and to come back in. That leaves no place at all for an eFoil.

West along the coast, Pianottoli-Caldarello (121/2026 of 7 May 2026) closes almost its whole buoyed shore to registered motor craft outside four channels.

What eight Corsican operators charge for an eFoil session

Each figure in the table comes from the operator's own site, read on 26 October 2026. Lessons and rentals get separate columns, because two bases hand a board only to riders who already fly.

A one hour lesson costs €110 in Pinarello and €150 at the three bases in the west and north that print one. Packages bring the hour down a little. Pinarello sells five hours for €510, Waterplay five for €500, and Wingbox four sessions for €500, with a duo hour for two at €170. A rental half hour costs anything from €50 in Calvi to €100 at Santa Giulia.

The age limits are the operators' own. Waterplay, Corsica'Wing and Wingbox take riders from 12, Aqualoisirs from 18. Location Foil Corse claims most customers fly “en moins d'une heure”, in under an hour, which is its claim, not ours. Wingbox coaches from a safety boatthrough a Bluetooth helmet, and Corsica'Wing prints no condition on its rental line, so ask before renting there without a lesson.

The west coast gulfs, from Campomoro up to Lava

Two bases work the gulf of Propriano. Aqualoisirs, on the plage de Portigliolo near Propriano, offers a supervised 30 minute taster for €95 and rents to confirmed riders at €75 per half hour, from age 18. The Propriano plan, arrêté 190/2019 of 19 July 2019, gives Portigliolo one access channel 25 m wide and 300 m long, south of the beach, and draws no zone closed to engines there.

Waterplay works the beach at Campomoro from age 12, with vest, helmet and board supplied. You launch with the instructor, then ride under supervision, and only riders already initiated may rent. The Belvédère-Campomoro plan (067/2026 of 25 March 2026) draws two channels of 300 by 30 m through a no motor zone 1,700 m wide and 100 m deep, right off that beach.

Ajaccio has no base of its own among the eight. JPS Aventure sits in the golfe de Lava, “à 2 pas d'Ajaccio” in its words, and sells a 20 minute session for €60, with no brand or age printed. Lava falls under the Appietto plan (110/2024 of 30 April 2024), whose one channel is reserved to registered motor craft at 5 knots; everything points to that being the base's beach. In the city's own plan, arrêté 222/2025 of 3 July 2025, no motor zones cover Terre sacrée, Marinella, Trottel and Ricanto.

Off the airport runway, arrêté 286/2026 of 20 July 2026 sets four zones. In zone 1, beyond 300 m, surface navigation, mooring, swimming and diving are banned for everyone, and yellow buoys marked with an X show the limits. Anyone riding from a boat in the gulf should know them.

Balagne in the north west, and the quiet north east

Corsica'Wing in Calvi teaches with certified instructors from age 12, and its rental is the cheapest on the island by any published price, €50 for 30 minutes. The Calvi plan, arrêté 146/2026 of 21 May 2026, sets four transit channels for registered motor craft at 5 knots, bans registered craft from the bathing zones and draws no zone closed to engines.

In L'Île-Rousse, Wingbox starts from the sailing club on the plage de la gare, for riders aged 12 to 69 and ideally 35 to 100 kg. Two sessions cost €270, and a second rider in a duo adds €20 per session. Its plan, arrêté 158/2024 of 24 May 2024, places a channel at that beach right beside a municipal channel for the unregistered craft of the base nautique. A municipal arrêté created that channel, and its text is nowhere online that a search could reach, so whether an eFoil may use it is a question for the base.

East of Balagne the bases run out: none at Saint-Florent, on Cap Corse or in Bastia. Riding off Saint-Florent would be awkward in any case. Its plan (050/2021 of 25 March 2021) protects a biotope zone where registered craft, and unregistered craft from offshore, may not navigate or moor inside 300 m, while beyond 300 m all craft are barred. Further out, the Cap Corse and Agriate marine park sets 20 knots in part of the western gulf (arrêté 179/2024 of 3 June 2024, article 1).

Which coast to pick for the wind of the day

Corsica gives you two coasts facing away from each other, so when one is choppy, look at the other. Météo-France describes the libeccio as a south west wind, usually dry in summer, that blows from the west on the south of the island and from the south west in Balagne and western Cap Corse. A libeccio day, then, is a day for Pinarello and Porto-Vecchio on the sheltered east. The grégale comes from the north east and, by the same logic, does the opposite: it hits the east coast, so the west gulfs become the better bet. The mistral turns west over the island.

The Bouches de Bonifacio are a textbook case of wind acceleration, and Météo-France gives the strait a marine forecast of its own. Windfinder's headland station at Bonifacio logs a dominant north westerly averaging 12 knots, with gusts averaging 23.

Five knots, beach channels and no motor zones around Corsica

The frame arrêté 109/2024 of 30 April 2024 sets the base rule in article 2.1. Inside the 300 m band, speed is limited to 5 knots, a limit “générale et permanente” that holds with or without buoys. The beach plans themselves apply once their buoys are laid, except the airport and Saint-Florent texts, which carry no such condition.

Every Corsican plan reserves its access channels to registered motor craft and jet skis, for direct transit at 5 knots, and none names a motor board or an eFoil zone. Article 9.5.1.1 closes those channels to unregistered craft unless the mayor allows it. The sum of it: an unregistered eFoil has no channel of its own in any préfet plan in Corsica, and whether a mayor has opened one is unclear. The no motor zones are worded differently from plan to plan, and article 9.5.1.2 leaves unregistered motor craft to the mayor, but the safe assumption is that every one is closed to an eFoil. Three plans, Porto-Vecchio, Propriano and Saint-Florent, say the préfet regulates water sports practised from offshore with unregistered craft, which is hard to read any other way than that those rules also reach an eFoil launched from a yacht and riding in.

For the board itself the national text is Division 240, annexed to the arrêté of 23 November 1987. Since 7 June 2026 its article 240-1.02 names a “planche nautique à moteur”, “avec ou sans foil”, and an eFoil fits that wording. Under article 240-2.11 you ride by daylight and no further than 2 nautical miles from a shelter. More than 300 m from a shelter it asks for a 50 N buoyancy aid, or a wetsuit that qualifies, and a waterproof light lasting at least 6 hours. Whether you need a license or registration is an open question in French law, and what an operator asks of you is its own policy, not a State rule.

Keep 100 m from marine mammals (arrêté 384/2023, article 3 b) and slow to 5 knots within 100 m of a diver's flag (109/2024, article 6). Breaking a préfet's or mayor's arrêté can cost up to €150 under articles R610-5 and 131-13 of the code pénal. In an emergency, CROSS MED answers on 196 or VHF channel 16.

The paragraphs above summarize the texts for riders and stop well short of legal advice.

Lavezzi, the osprey coast and Scandola

Under the décret of 23 September 1999, article 16, the préfet maritime may regulate navigation in the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve. Arrêté 235/2023 of 24 July 2023 bans navigation, mooring and stopping in four zones, Lavezzi, Ratino, Porraggia and Perduto, for registered craft and for unregistered craft from offshore. They are closed all year. The Porto-Vecchio and Pianottoli-Caldarello plans were adopted after the reserve's advisory committee gave its opinion, and the Bonifacio plan was taken in the reserve's interest.

Between Calvi and Cargèse, 27 osprey nests are monitored, six in the Scandola reserve. Each breeding season the préfet closes zones off Calenzana, Galéria, Osani, Partinello and Piana to registered craft, on dates that change yearly, so keep a board well clear of those zones. Scandola's marine rules stayed unsettled in this research, so the reserve is not listed here as a place to ride.

Your arrival port picks your base

Of the four airports, Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi and Figari, Figari is nearest to Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio. The battery cannot fly with you. Spare lithium batteries are banned in the hold, aircraft cap them at 160 Wh, and an eFoil pack holds roughly 500 to 2,600 Wh, as our eFoil battery guide explains.

Ferries reach six ports from Italy, mainland France and Sardinia. L'Île-Rousse, served from Savona or Nice, has Wingbox in town and Corsica'Wing along the coast in Calvi, which Ferryhopper lists no route to. Ajaccio, from Marseille, Toulon, Nice or Porto Torres, is near JPS Aventure. Corsica Linea's Marseille to Propriano line lands near Aqualoisirs and Waterplay, while Porto-Vecchio, or Bonifacio from Santa Teresa, puts you in the south. Bastia has no base to speak of.

With a car, Ferryhopper says luggage limits are loose as long as everything stays inside the vehicle. On its Sardinia routes Moby books boards that ride neither on the roof nor at the rear as separate items. No ferry line publishes a rule on eFoil batteries as such. In 2024 Corsica Linea asked electric car owners to board at 30 % charge at most, and Corsica Ferries said a battery as little charged as possible is preferable, so ask the company before you sail with an eFoil battery.

Launching a private board is the harder part. The slipways named in the Bonifacio and Lecci plans sit at channels reserved to registered craft, so an unregistered board needs the mayor's permission before it can use one. Ask the nearest base or harbor office where you may go in. Renting avoids the whole problem, since Location Foil Corse delivers board, battery, charger, impact vest and remote anywhere on the island.

Corsica against Sardinia, fifty minutes apart

Moby and Ichnusa Lines link Santa Teresa Gallura and Bonifacio in about 50 minutes. Sardinia starts cheaper, with a 30 minute lesson for €45 at E-Surf Sardinia in Alghero against €80 at Waterplay or Corsica'Wing. Nido Surf at Posada charges €140 for a private hour, near the top of Corsica's €110 to €150 range. Italian law sets 16 as the minimum age to drive (D.Lgs. 171/2005, article 39), while Corsica's limits of 12 or 18 are the operators' own.

Olbia keeps bathing strips of 200 m off sand and 100 m off rock (ordinance 29/2026) where Corsica works with 300 m, and the Capo Caccia and Tavolara reserves ban jet skis and similar craft. Our eFoil Sardinia guide covers that side. Nothing makes a crossing on the board banned as such, since whether Division 240 binds a board from abroad is open, but French rules apply on Corsican water and the Bouches are windy. Put the board on the ferry, or rent on each island.

Frequently asked questions

Staying in Porto-Vecchio, which eFoil base do I book?

For rental, Santa Giulia, where Extrême Sud Aventure rents for €100 per half hour and €180 per hour. For a lesson, Pinarello bay, 15 km north, charges €110 an hour (list prices read 26 October 2026).

What are the options for an eFoil in Bonifacio?

Delivery only. The town has no base of its own; Location Foil Corse brings its boards there, and the Lavezzi zones are closed all year.

Is the golfe de Lava the nearest eFoil to Ajaccio?

On our list, yes. JPS Aventure sells a 20 minute session for €60 from its base nautique, a stone's throw from the city in the operator's own words. It is the one base on our list for the Ajaccio side. Location Foil Corse delivers to Ajaccio as well.

Is Pinarello really the cheapest lesson hour on the island?

Among the bases that print an hour lesson, yes. The Pinarello school charges €110; Waterplay at Campomoro, Corsica'Wing at Calvi and Wingbox at L'Île-Rousse each list €150, and Wingbox adds a 15 minute briefing to its hour. Half hour lessons cost €80 at Waterplay and Corsica'Wing, and Aqualoisirs asks €95 for a supervised 30 minute taster. All are list prices read on the operator sites on 26 October 2026.

I am bringing my own board. Where do I launch it?

Riding it is allowed; a legal way off the beach is what you will struggle to find. The préfet's channels are reserved for registered motor craft and closed to an unregistered board unless the mayor allows it, so ask the local base or harbor office where you may launch. Then keep to 5 knots inside 300 m, stay out of every no motor zone and mooring field, and never enter the Lavezzi zones. That is how the texts read to a rider, not a lawyer.

How do I fit Sardinia into the same trip?

By ferry from Bonifacio. Moby and Ichnusa Lines cross from Santa Teresa Gallura to Bonifacio in about 50 minutes, and renting on each island spares you the battery question on the ferry.
