Three eFoil bases between Cancún and Bacalar
The Mexican Caribbean is a long coast with very few eFoil launch points on it. Two schools work from one private beach at Puerto Cancún, where the hotel zone begins in the north. One school rides off Cozumel. One teaches on the Laguna de Bacalar in the far south of Quintana Roo, 35 km north of Chetumal, and a second outfit rents boards on that lagoon.
Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, the names every visitor knows, have no school with a published eFoil tariff.
So the real choice is between Puerto Cancún, Cozumel and Bacalar, which differ in water, in how they bill your time and in who may take a board out alone. For anyone new to the sport, our guide to the eFoil explains how the board, mast and electric propeller work.
Four eFoil schools in the Mexican Caribbean compared
Four schools on three bases, and no two of them package a session alike. The last column is our reading of who each format fits; the schools do not say it about themselves.

| School | Base | Board | Format | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-Foil Cancun (Shaka Vibes) | Puerto Cancún beach club | Lift | Private or group lesson by the clock hour; rental only for riders who already fly | First timers who want a coached hour; returning riders who want a board alone |
| Ventaigua | Puerto Cancún beach | Brand not named | 30 minute or 1 hour lesson or rental, length subject to battery life | A cheap first try; board sports people who want to rent at once |
| Reckless e-surf | La Monina beach restaurant, Cozumel | Lift Cruiser, Lift Sport | Private lesson for up to 2; rental sold as one battery | Couples and friends sharing a lesson; Cozumel stays |
| Adventure Lab | The Yak Lake House, Bacalar | Ask when booking | Private session with a bilingual instructor | Riders who want a lagoon without sargassum |
Older listings still name an “eFoil Club Cancun”. Those links no longer lead to a booking page, so leave that name off your list.
Two eFoil schools behind one private gate in Puerto Cancún
The first kilometers of the hotel zone face Isla Mujeres and stay calm; from about km 10, at Chac Mool, the strip turns to the open Caribbean and the waves grow. Both Cancún schools sit at the calm northern end for that reason, on the beach at Puerto Cancún, which also spares you the 45 minute drive out to Isla Blanca, where the kiters go. Isla Blanca itself, a peninsula about 20 km from downtown, has no eFoil offer we know of.
You do not wander onto this beach. Both schools use a private, reservation-only entrance; Ventaigua sends directions by WhatsApp after booking, and a spot guide mentions parking on reservation or a 1 km beach walk from Playa Las Perlas.
For roughly the first 100 m the water is flat and shallow, then deeper and choppier. The spot sits on a permanent sandbar, and the launch beach shrinks at high tide and around the full moon. Ask how the school handles the sandbar; the mast and propeller under the board need depth.
E-Foil Cancun is the eFoil arm of Shaka Vibes, a water sports center at the Puerto Cancún beach club, and it teaches and rents on Lift eFoils. Lessons use beginner gear, radio communication, a helmet and an impact vest, on flat water with no boat traffic, and the school says most students fly within their first private hour. It teaches in English, Spanish, French and more. A lesson includes the eFoil, the safety gear and access to the private beach.
Ventaigua, the second school, teaches in Spanish and English and names no eFoil brand. Its WeTravel listing includes a helmet, a safety vest, the beach access fee and drinking water. Transport costs extra and needs 24 hours of notice.
Cancún eFoil rental and lesson prices
On rental, the two Puerto Cancún schools take opposite lines. E-Foil Cancun rents boards only to riders who already fly, so if you have never stood up on a foil you book a lesson there. Ventaigua pitches its rental at people with good balance or board sports experience and says no previous eFoil time is needed.
Rental mostly comes in below the lesson on both price lists. You pay for the board and the beach, and no instructor rides along.

| School | Session | List price |
|---|---|---|
| E-Foil Cancun | Private lesson, 1 hour | MXN 3,500 (one price page says MXN 3,000) |
| E-Foil Cancun | Private lesson, 2 hours | MXN 6,000 |
| E-Foil Cancun | Group lesson sharing one board, 1 hour | MXN 4,000 |
| E-Foil Cancun | Rental, one board, riders who already fly | MXN 3,000 an hour, MXN 5,000 for two |
| E-Foil Cancun | Rental, two boards, riders who already fly | MXN 5,600 an hour, MXN 9,000 for two |
| Ventaigua | Lesson, 30 minutes | MXN 1,600 |
| Ventaigua | Lesson, 1 hour (WeTravel) | US$166 |
| Ventaigua | Rental, 30 minutes | MXN 1,300 |
| Ventaigua | Rental, 1 hour | MXN 2,500 |
An hour of rental costs MXN 2,500 at Ventaigua and MXN 3,000 at E-Foil Cancun, and the cheapest way onto a board is Ventaigua's 30 minute lesson at MXN 1,600. The other side of the sums, what a board costs to buy, is in our eFoil price guide.
E-Foil Cancun can also bring a board to a yacht or a hotel for an extra MXN 2,000. Transport to the beach may be possible, free or paid, depending on where you stay.
Clock hour, booked slot or one battery
Two price lists can both say one hour and still sell you different amounts of riding. Three of these schools count time in three different ways.
E-Foil Cancun bills per clock hour, not per battery. Book an hour and the hour is yours.
Ventaigua sells booked time, but its WeTravel listing says the session length is subject to battery life. Ride at full power and the pack can run flat before the slot ends.
Reckless on Cozumel sells its rental the other way round, as one battery. Its site describes a 15 minute refresher and then 1 hour 30 minutes of riding on that charge, at US$200. Our eFoil battery guide explains why speed and rider weight move ride time so much.
The currency also changes from page to page. E-Foil Cancun, Ventaigua's own site and Adventure Lab price in pesos, while WeTravel and GetYourGuide quote US dollars, so convert one side before you compare two offers.
Cozumel eFoil lessons from La Monina
Reckless e-surf keeps its shop on Av. Benito Juárez in San Miguel de Cozumel, but the riding starts at La Monina, a beach restaurant. The fleet mixes Lift Cruiser and Lift Sport eFoils with Radinn jetboards, so a group can split between foiling and skimming along the surface on a jetboard.
The private lesson costs US$150 and is built as 30 minutes of class followed by 60 minutes of riding, for up to two people, so a couple or two friends can book one slot together. Sharing one board or riding two is a question for the booking. Riders wear a helmet, a life jacket and elbow and knee pads, and the team teaches in English, French and Spanish.
At least one hotel desk on Cozumel resells the experience, listing an eFoil or jetsurf course at MXN 3,000 with the meeting point at La Monina (read in September 2026). Book direct and you know which board and which format you get.
Ultramar runs ferries to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen, about 68 km south of Cancún. Cozumel's west coast is also one of the shores where sargassum tends to land less.
Laguna de Bacalar, for the bad weed months
Inland lagoons such as the Laguna de Bacalar get no sargassum at all, so when the coast is thick with weed, that alone justifies the drive south.
Adventure Lab runs a private eFoil Session with a bilingual instructor, from MXN 1,500 per session, based at The Yak Lake House hostel, with transport on request. The school rides on in light rain and reschedules for free when the weather turns severe, which matters on a lagoon you may have driven a long way to reach. Which board you ride is something to settle when you book.
A second outfit, Bacalar Lagoon Tours, rents eFoils south of the town around the Hua Pix area, for half an hour, one, two or five hours, with an option that includes hotel transport. It publishes no price, so ask for a quote and check whether a first timer gets any instruction before going out. Mosquito repellent belongs in the bag for the lagoon shore.
Isla Mujeres, Playa, Tulum and Nichupté, without an eFoil base
Isla Mujeres is 15 minutes by ferry from Puerto Juárez and has some of the beaches least touched by sargassum, but no eFoil operator. One way to ride there is E-Foil Cancun's boat service. Shaka's Garrafón trip is surf foiling, with no motor on the board.
We found no school in Playa del Carmen with a published eFoil tariff. The Mayakoba resort lists Fliteboard among its ocean activities, on reservation request and without a price.
Near Tulum there used to be an eFoil offer on Laguna Nopalitos, a freshwater lagoon a short drive south of town. Its pages are gone. Treat any listing that still mentions it as unconfirmed until the operator replies.
Laguna Nichupté, about 3,000 hectares of sheltered water inside the hotel zone, holds crocodiles, and the local press has documented wastewater pipes running into it. No eFoil school launches there.
Why the calm months are also the weed months
Off Cancún the sea sits around 27 °C from January to March and 29 to 30 °C from August to October. A neoprene top helps against the cold wind from December to February, and Ventaigua has them.
The windy season runs from about November to May, generally at 15 to 20 knots and 20 to 25 on some days. Winter cold fronts, the “nortes”, last 3 to 10 days each. Calm water is likeliest from about June to October. No school states a closed eFoil season; in the windy months they pick the calmer days between spells, and Shaka Vibes switches its focus to kite and wing.
June to October brings the weed and the storms along with the calm. Sargassum rises in spring, peaks around May to August, eases through the autumn and reaches a low around November and winter. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with its peak on 10 September and most activity between mid August and mid October.

| Months | Wind | Sargassum | Storms | Water |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | Windy season, fronts in spells of 3 to 10 days | Low | Outside the hurricane season | About 27 °C from January; neoprene top advised |
| March to May | Windy season fades by about May | Rising, peak begins around May | Outside the hurricane season | About 27 °C into March |
| June to August | Calm water likeliest | Peak | Season from 1 June; activity grows from mid August | Warming toward 29 to 30 °C |
| September and October | Calm water likeliest | Easing | Peak 10 September; most activity to mid October | 29 to 30 °C |
| November | Windy season starts | Low point arrives | Season ends 30 November | Warm |
Even the shores with the least weed (Isla Mujeres, Cozumel's west coast, the Cancún hotel zone) change from day to day, so check a live map such as USF Sargassum Watch the night before, and ask each school what happens to your booking when a front or a storm arrives.
Picking a base by what you already ride
Never ridden, staying in Cancún. Puerto Cancún is the obvious start. Pick E-Foil Cancun if you want a full private hour, radio coaching and the school's own claim that most students fly in that hour. Pick Ventaigua if the budget is tight and 30 minutes is enough to find out whether you like it.
Already flying, want a board to yourself. E-Foil Cancun rents to you by the clock hour, which is the safer bet if you ride hard and do not want a battery to cut the session short. On Cozumel, Reckless sells one battery with 1 hour 30 minutes of riding after a short refresher.
Board sports background, no eFoil yet. Of the two Puerto Cancún schools, Ventaigua is the one that invites you straight to rental. Its 30 minute lesson at MXN 1,600 is still the cheaper test, and it puts an instructor beside you for the first minutes on the foil.
Traveling as a pair, or staying on Cozumel or in Playa del Carmen, look at Reckless at La Monina. One private lesson covers up to two people, and the Ultramar ferry from Playa connects the two coasts.
Visiting in a heavy sargassum month, or touring the south, go to Bacalar. Adventure Lab's session starts from MXN 1,500 and the lagoon gets no weed. In a windy winter week, wait for a calm day between fronts or switch to wing foiling at Shaka Vibes.
If the Mexican Caribbean is one of several warm-water options on your list, the Cayman Islands eFoil guide covers a school that brings the board to your beach on Grand Cayman, and the Turks and Caicos eFoil page compares the two schools on Providenciales. On the Pacific side of Mexico, our page on eFoil in Los Cabos covers the tip of Baja California.
Contact forms, WeTravel slots and cash
E-Foil Cancun's online calendar showed nothing bookable when we looked, so you go through its contact form or e-mail. Ventaigua sells dated slots on WeTravel. For the Puerto Cancún beach, bookers give their experience, height and weight. Have those figures ready whichever school you pick.
E-Foil Cancun takes cash in US dollars, pesos or euros. Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen; the schools supply the board and the safety gear.
On rules, our sources hold no Mexican regulation text that names eFoils, so we quote none here. Where a board may ride near swimmers is something the schools know locally and handle for you; ask about it when you book, above all if you plan to rent. Take this as a gap in our sources, not as a legal opinion.
