Ten areas, three kinds of water
The Mediterranean, from Menton to Marseille and around Corsica, has almost no tide. On the Atlantic, from Arcachon up to Brittany, the tide is large and sets the timetable. Lakes and the Seine make up the third group. The sea rules stop at their shores, and each of them has police rules of its own.
Inland is where trips go wrong. Lake Annecy looks like perfect flat water and bans the board outright. Lake Geneva allows it on the French side under one set of rules and forbids it under another. Before comparing prices, look down the right-hand column of the table.

The Côte d'Azur, and Hyères beyond it
Cannes Jeunesse lists a first hour at €95, Nissa Foil Club in Nice at €190, and between those two €150 turns up more often than any other price.
Our French Riviera eFoil guide takes the coast base by base, from Menton to Saint-Tropez. Hyères lies west of that stretch and gets its own lines here, along with the two Gulf towns that set water aside for the board.
Three schools on the Giens peninsula
Riding Watt launches from La Bergerie, takes riders from age 12 and keeps groups to four. Location E-Foil Hyères works from the Almanarre side on SiFly boards and lists one board for one hour at €115. At La Capte, MF Kite lists its hour at €120. The Hyères beach plan, N°271/2026 of 10 July 2026, names all three spots.
Gassin and Cogolin set water aside for the board
Two beach plans in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez mark a “zone EFOIL”, and no other Riviera town we looked at has one. Cogolin's came out from the préfecture maritime under N°049/2026 of 10 March 2026, Gassin's under N°169/2026 of 1 June 2026. Those publications are what we read; the town hall texts behind them we have not seen.
Marseille has a school but no fixed beach
France's second city is an awkward place to eFoil. SUN EFOIL is the one school based in the city that our search turned up. It covers the coast toward Toulon by arrangement, from €70 for 30 minutes and from €130 for an hour (read October 2026). No school we found has a fixed eFoil spot in Marseille, Cassis or La Ciotat.
To the east, Bandol Sports Nautiques on the plage du Casino in Bandol lists an eFoil initiation from €70 for 30 minutes. Inland, E-surfer rents Fliteboard Series 4 boards from the Digue de Saint-Chamas on the Étang de Berre, the big lagoon north west of the city.

The Calanques and the Côte Bleue are off limits
The postcard coves appear to be closed to the board. In the sea core of the Calanques national park, préfet maritime arrêté 124/2022 of 18 May 2022 lists the craft allowed in its annex I, and no motor board is on that list. Without an authorization, that is a plain no. Décret 2012-507, article 15, also bans motor boats from the inner calanques of En-Vau and Port-Pin. The decree is older than the word PNM, but Division 240 counts the PNM among boats, and we take the ban to cover an eFoil.
West of the city the text is explicit. Préfet maritime arrêté N°192/2026 of 12 June 2026, article 1er, bans any craft with a thermal or electric motor in the two reserve zones of the Côte Bleue off Carry-le-Rouet and Cap Couronne, and it names “la planche à foil électrique” in so many words. The ban runs all year.
Eight operators around Corsica
Calvi, L'Île-Rousse, Lava, Portigliolo, Campomoro, Santa Giulia and Pinarello: that is where the island's eight operators we counted put their boards in the water.
Corsica'Wing at Calvi (lessons from age 12) and Waterplay at Campomoro both list €80 for 30 minutes and €150 for an hour. Extrême Sud Aventure at Santa Giulia lists €100 and €180, and Aqualoisirs at Portigliolo near Propriano lists €95 for 30 minutes, for riders of 18 and over. Nobody turned up in Bonifacio town, at Palombaggia, in Saint-Florent, on Cap Corse or in Bastia, so the north east coast and Bonifacio itself are gaps on the map.
Corsican beach plans and the Lavezzi zones
On the island the beach plans are signed by the préfet maritime de la Méditerranée, and their channels are reserved for registered motor craft. The Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve goes further. There, arrêté N°235/2023 of 24 July 2023 bans navigation, anchoring and stopping at all times in four zones around Lavezzi, Ratino, Porraggia and Perduto. The ban covers registered craft and, when they come in from the open sea, unregistered ones. Across the strait, Sardinia has rules of its own, set out on our Sardinia eFoil page.
Arcachon Bay and the lakes of the Landes
Arcachon Bay is the easiest region in France to price. Our list has five operators there, and four of them list a first coached session at €150: Efoil Arcachon (one hour of initiation), CRUZE at Cap Ferret (a discovery session), Glisse en Herbe at Cap Ferret (1 h 30, riders from age 7) and FoilXperience at Pyla. The fifth, Arca Rent Foil, lists €65 to €75 per person for an initiation of 45 minutes to 1 h 30. All were read in September 2026.
Cazaux-Sanguinet, Biscarrosse and Lacanau
South of the bay, the big freshwater lakes look made for a beginner. The rules are less friendly. On the Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet, arrêté 2014 n°1954, article 2-7, bans the “planche à moteur” on the Gironde part of the lake. The Landes part, where Sanguinet sits, remains unclear under the rules as they stood in November 2025: they do not name the board, so check with the school which part of the water it uses. eFoil Sanguinet works there and lists €120 for 1 h 30, of which about 40 minutes are spent riding (read September 2026).
The Lac de Biscarrosse-Parentis bans craft “similaire” to the motor craft its rules list, which may or may not catch an eFoil, so we mark it as unclear. On the Lac de Lacanau no text we found names the eFoil, the motor board or the foil, and none allows it either. We class Lacanau as unclear and leaning toward no.
Brittany and the Loire coast run on the tide
The Observatoire de l'environnement en Bretagne puts the tidal range at up to 14 m in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel at a coefficient of 120, about 7 m in the mer d'Iroise, and no more than 4 m along the south coast. With swings like that, we expect the tide to decide where and when a board can launch, so let the school pick the spot.
On the south coast, Happy Kite School at Port-Haliguen in Quiberon lists €150 for 1 h 15 (read September 2026). In the rade de Brest, Foil Fun Ocean Drone runs eFoil sessions (a separate company, whatever the name, with no link to this site). A first session in the region lists from €90 in Brest, where the length is not stated, to €150 at Quiberon. Schools here commonly coach from a support boat by radio.
Further south the coast belongs to the Pays de la Loire region, not to Brittany. Glisse Academy teaches at Saint-Brevin, and Le Bureau du Vent on Noirmoutier runs one-hour sessions for four people at most.
Annecy says no, Lake Geneva says maybe
Lake Annecy has no eFoil operator, and that is no gap in the market. The lake's police rules (RPP, arrêté DDT/DIR/UL/2015-0142 of 10 June 2015), article 2.2 as replaced by avenant n°5 (DDT-2023-0805 of 26 May 2023), ban “les planches à moteur” and “les hydroptères motorisés ou à voiles”. That is the latest version of the rules we could read (July 2025). Only a derogation from the préfet under article 7 lifts it.

Takamaka, which has a base in Annecy, says eFoiling is “currently prohibited on Lake Annecy and Lake Aix-les-Bains”, the second being the Lac du Bourget. We have not read the Bourget rules, so that one rests on the operator's word. Across the Alps in Austria, most lakes are closed to boards as well.
The French shore of Lake Geneva
Of the alpine lakes here, only Lake Geneva has schools. Evolution 2 teaches at Thonon, from the Quai de Ripaille, and at Saint-Gingolph. It lists €70 for 30 minutes, €100 for 45 minutes and €125 for an hour per person, takes three riders per session at most, and wants every one of them able to swim. Gliss Camp at Saint-Gingolph lists that scale for group lessons. We found no operator riding in Swiss waters; the offers advertised from Geneva take their riders over to the French side.
The legal picture is split. The Haute-Savoie lake rules, article 6.5 (avenant n°5, DDT-2020-0989 of 23 July 2020), allow an electric motorized board with a foil only outside the 300 m bande de rive, with a helmet and a light. The Franco-Swiss navigation rules on the same water ban “tout engin similaire” to a jet ski. The Swiss Federal Court held in 2022 that an eFoil falls under that wording, and the Federal Council's answer of 1 February 2023 to interpellation 22.4313 says e-foils are not allowed in Swiss waters. For the French shore we call it unclear: the French text allows it outside 300 m, the treaty text reads against it.
Paris rides from the Bois de Boulogne bank
Foil in Paris is the only eFoil school we found in Paris or anywhere in Île-de-France. Its base is at 1 Allée du Bord-de-l'Eau, 75016, on the Bois de Boulogne bank of the Seine near the Longchamp racecourse. You may also run into eFoil Paris IDF, which sells Fliteboards and does not teach.
Do not plan a ride past Notre-Dame. The Seine-Yonne police rules (VNF consolidation of 14 October 2025), article 9.1, ban craft of 4.5 kW or less and nautical sports between the périphérique bridges. As far as we can tell, that rules out eFoiling through central Paris.

What the PNM label means at sea and inland
Since 7 June 2026 French sea law has a name for the board. Division 240 (arrêté du 23 novembre 1987), article 240-1.02 III.4, inserted by the arrêté du 21 mai 2026 (JORF du 6 juin 2026), defines the planche nautique motorisée (PNM): a board under 2.5 m with a thermal or electric motor, “avec ou sans foil”, throttled by a trigger and steered by the rider's body. Boards with electric assistance only are left out. We take an eFoil to be a PNM. The jet ski class is defined apart, in III.3, and no official text deals with jet-drive eFoils on their own.
Daylight, 2 nautical miles and the kit beyond 300 m
Article 240-2.11, in force since 31 October 2024, keeps a PNM to daylight and within 2 nautical miles of a shelter. From 300 m out you carry a 50 N buoyancy aid (or a neoprene or dry suit that protects the torso and floats) and a waterproof light good for at least 6 hours. Closer in, the article asks for no kit. Local rules from the préfet maritime can be stricter.
Who sets the rules inside 300 m
Both seaboards cap speed at 5 knots inside the 300 m band, buoyed or not. On the Mediterranean that is arrêté-cadre N°109/2024 of 30 April 2024, article 2.1, which also sets 5 knots within 100 m of a diver-down flag (article 6). On the Atlantic it is arrêté 2018/090 of 28 June 2018 (consolidated 5 February 2019), article 2, and its article 3.1 keeps motor boards out of buoyed bathing and beach-craft zones and on the channels reserved for them. Since 14 December 2023 (arrêté du 1er octobre 2023) a PNM no longer counts as an engin de plage, so in our view the board cannot slip into a swimming area as a beach toy.
Up to 300 m out the mayor polices bathing and beach activities under CGCT article L2213-23, and the préfet maritime handles the rest. Each town's beach plan is therefore the text to read before launching. In the Pelagos sanctuary, préfet maritime arrêté 384/2023, article 3 b, forbids coming closer than 100 m to marine mammals.
Rivers and lakes run on another system. Code des transports article R4241-60 leaves water sports to each waterway's own police rules, and the sea texts above, the 300 m band included, stop at the shore.
Our interpretation of the texts cited, checked in September and October 2026. Not legal advice; the published text prevails.
Ride the morning, count the minutes
Off Villefranche the sea averages about 15 °C in January and about 26 °C in August. Météo-France describes a daytime sea breeze that usually rises in the late morning and blows 15 to 30 km/h on average, mostly in the afternoon. We take the morning as the flat window, and Riviera schools advise it too. The mistral, from the north west to the north, is more frequent in winter and early spring.
You ride less than the clock shows. Le Bureau du Vent quotes about 2 hours of battery depending on use and rider weight, yet eFoil Sanguinet counts some 40 minutes of riding in a 1 h 30 slot. Our eFoil price guide sets those figures against buying, and the battery page explains the run time.
