eFoil in Italy

Three lakes in the north, the sea everywhere else, and rules that change by district

Last updated:

Lake or sea comes before the region

The schools crowd together in the north, on three big lakes. Our list holds 15 eFoil offers on Lake Garda, six operators at five places on Lake Como and five offers on the Italian shores of Lake Maggiore. Along the coast they thin out, and some well known stretches have none we could find.

Each lake runs on a daily wind cycle. On Garda the Pelèr blows from the north in the morning and the Ora from the south after noon. Como has the Tivano early and the Breva from mid morning, and on Maggiore the Tramontana comes early and the Inverna from late morning. All three are calmest in the morning. Book the first slot of the day.

The sea stays warm late into the year. Off Olbia the water averages 21.4 °C in June and again in October, and Palermo still averages 20.0 °C in November. What the coast lacks in summer is room. The districts we read keep a band off the beaches for swimmers (200 m in Olbia's district and on Capri), and boards reach open water through access corridors, which in Olbia's district are 20 m wide with a 3 knot limit.

Choose a lake for a first flight on flat water and the widest pick of schools. Choose the coast for a beach week, an October session, or a trip to Sicily or Sardinia you were taking anyway.

Every area we found, in one table

Every area where we found an eFoil school or rental is in this table, plus Venice, the place people ask about most and the one where we found nothing. In the season column we print only months an operator publishes.

Operators' list prices, read 26 September to 25 October 2026. Boards and time on the water differ.

Read the Garda range with care. It runs from Beekite's hour at €95, plus a one-off €10 introduction, to an Audi board at LakeRiders billed as net riding time, so the lowest figure is not always the cheapest ride. Puglia's €270 to €570 is a Locals Crew course for one to three people, not an hourly rate.

Garda and Como, the two busy lakes

Lake Garda covers 370 km², more than any other lake in Italy, and its three shores answer to three sets of rules. Electric foils are banned on the Trentino tip around Riva del Garda and Torbole. The Veneto and Lombard shores allow them under their own texts. On 28 September 2026 an hour of rental cost €95 at Beekite, €100 at YourWave, Benaco Paddling Academy, Foiling Academy and Reunion, and €169 or €249 at LakeRiders, depending on the board. Reunion Kite Academy at Campione di Tremosine also sells a €70 trial for a first try, ten minutes of theory and 20 on the water. The Lake Garda guide takes the shores one at a time.

Malcesine seen from the hillside above, its castle tower on the shore of Lake Garda and the mountains of the western shore across the water
Malcesine, on the Veneto shore of Lake Garda.

Lake Como (145 km², wholly in Lombardy) has eFoil bases only at Lecco, Faggeto Lario, Colonno, Dervio and Gera Lario. Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna, the names on the postcards, have none of their own. Prices spread wide. Watersports Center Dervio charges €75 for a 45 minute course, Water Experience Center at Faggeto Lario from €160 for a private hour, and EFOIL.FUN at Colonno €200 for 90 minutes with an instructor (read 26 September to 24 October 2026). The lake authority's ordinance 1/2026 names the eFoil outright in art. 4, with riding hours, a 10 m spacing and a life jacket. The Lake Como page covers each base.

Maggiore and Orta, a short list by a border

Lake Maggiore covers 212.5 km², about 80% of it Italian, with the north end in the Swiss canton of Ticino. We counted five offers on the Italian shores and none on the Swiss end. Bern leaves no doubt about its own side. On 1 February 2023, answering Interpellation 22.4313, the Federal Council said eFoils are not admitted in Switzerland or on the border waters, and motion 24.4515 to change that was still pending on 10 September 2026. No Italian authority has written anything comparable.

On the Italian side the question turns on Art. 43 of the regulation to the Italy Switzerland navigation agreement, which keeps craft under 2.5 m inside the 150 m shore belt and says they may in no case have a motor. As we read it, that leaves an eFoil little room, so ride with a school.

Follow Me Adventures in Cannobio sells 90 minutes for €170 (half an hour on land, an hour on the water), E-Foil Experience at Alice Beach a first hour for €120, and a Freedome trial at Ispra costs from €114 for 45 minutes in all and runs only with at least 5 participants (read 25 October 2026). Lake Orta, a small separate lake just to the west, has one operator we know of. E-Foil Experience at Spiaggia Miami charges €120 an hour and takes riders from 16 and up to 110 kg. More on the Lake Maggiore page.

Sardinia and the Bay of Naples

Some of the lowest list prices we found are on Sardinia. E-Surf Sardinia in Alghero sells a 30 minute lesson for €45, and Sardinia E-Foil School in Stintino a single lesson for €50 with 15 to 20 minutes on the water. In the north east, Nido Surf in Posada, about 35 minutes' drive from Olbia, charges €140 for a private hour, and Porto Cervo Luxury Sport rents Fliteboards from late May to early October after a first lesson, with no public price. Sea-Doo Centre Sardinia, an official Lift dealer with sites in Olbia and Poltu Quatu, rents by enquiry.

ARPAS, the regional weather service, names the Ponente and the Maestrale as the dominant winds. That points to the sheltered east coast bays from Olbia to Posada for an eFoil day when the Maestrale blows. Two marine parks matter. Capo Caccia Isola Piana off Alghero bans electric surfboards by name (Disciplinare 2026, art. 8 c. 1). Around Tavolara, off Olbia and San Teodoro, the park regulation (D.M. 3 December 2014, art. 19 c. 1) bans jet skis “e mezzi similari” without naming the eFoil, and we count it in on our own judgment. Each base gets its own entry on the Sardinia page.

Sorrento, Capri and Naples

Three spots around the bay have a working operator: Peters Beach at Marina Piccola in Sorrento, the beach at Marina Piccola on Capri and the Posillipo shore in Naples. Amalfi, Positano and Maiori have none we could find. Expect to pay at the top of the Italian range. MAKA eFoil in Sorrento charges €250 for a lesson of about 80 minutes on Lift boards, and Capri Hydro from €190 for an hour on a Fliteboard with no experience needed (read 24 October 2026). NEM Napoli teaches all year and publishes no price. Hydrofoil craft are banned in the Punta Campanella marine park, which runs from the Sorrento peninsula to the edge of Positano (2026 rules, art. 7). For the whole stretch, the empty Amalfi side included, see the Amalfi Coast page.

Taormina and Sciacca, the two Sicilian bases

They sit on different coasts, so let your hotel choose. Foil Taormina at Mazzarò runs a €200 beginner course and rents afterwards to riders who show adequate control. Sicily Jet Surfing, also in Taormina, sells four hours at €300 on a Waydoo or €400 on a Lift (read 28 September 2026). Near Sciacca on the south coast, Sealosophy works from the Rocco Forte Verdura resort and takes non guests who book 24 hours ahead. It also runs eFoil at 7 Pines in Baja Sardinia.

Sant'Agata di Militello's ordinance 17/2025 of 9 June 2025, art. 16, says plainly that no ministerial rules exist for motorised boards. It then bans them in bathing waters and beyond 1 mile, sets a minimum age of 16 and asks for insurance. It also defines the e-foil as jet driven, one of the local texts that make the jet ski question harder than it looks.

For an autumn trip, look south: Palermo's sea averages 23.0 °C in October, the warmest October figure on this page.

Tuscany and the Ligurian Riviera

Tuscany has three places with boards, two of them on the north coast. CSN Viareggio is a boat rental business, not a school, and an official Fliteboard service point; it rents at €140 an hour, €250 for a half day and €350 for a day. A Freedome listing at Marina di Pietrasanta sells a private lesson from €140 with about 45 minutes on the water, June to September (read October 2026). Further south, PKS Maremma at Castiglione della Pescaia teaches privately on Waydoo boards with radio instruction and rents only to riders with eFoil experience. On Elba, the Argentario, Giglio and the Pisa coast we found nothing.

Liguria offers more choice. SurfOn teaches and rents at Porto Venere, Finale Ligure and Levanto. Boatable, a separate seller, has a €150 session from Le Grazie in Porto Venere, with 60 to 70 minutes on the water and a private instructor. A Freedome listing at Rapallo, on the Gulf of Tigullio, offers a private lesson from €125, May to October (read 25 October 2026); the school is not named and the meeting point arrives after booking. In Genoa, Maremoto Genova teaches on Lift, Jetsurf, Waydoo and Audi boards but publishes no launch spot or price.

Two Ligurian districts have written rules for these boards. La Spezia's ordinance 72 of 28 April 2023, art. 31, sets an age of 16, a helmet, an approved life vest and a dedicated insurance policy, and keeps riders within 1,000 m of shore, out of the bathing band except through access corridors. Savona's regulation 79/2022 of 27 May 2022, which covers Finale Ligure, gives “e-bike acquatica e simili” their own rules in art. 62, daylight and a sea up to Douglas 2 among them. The eFoil goes unnamed, and we place it among the “simili” ourselves.

Puglia and the Adriatic Riviera

Along with Naples, Puglia is where we found a school teaching all year. Locals Crew in Salento runs courses year round, from June to September mostly at Torre San Giovanni on the Ionian coast, at €270 to €570 for one to three people. Garganosurf in Vieste is open from April to early November, and Flyonboard in Otranto sells a single Fliteboard session of about an hour for €120, the compulsory association fee included (read 28 September 2026). Two district texts cover these motorised boards: the Gallipoli regulation (ordinance 72/2025 of 19 June 2025) and the Vieste regulation of 24 June 2026 (arts. 43 to 44). Read the one for the district you ride in.

Up the Adriatic, eWave Pesaro charges €80 for a single lesson, €200 for three and €60 for 30 minutes of rental. Rimini's ordinance 32/2024 of 15 May 2024 sends motorised surfboards at least 1,000 m out. Further north, Kite Life FVG in Grado offers eFoil sessions, and Windsurfing School Gimmi at Lignano Sabbiadoro lists E-Foil lessons that the tourism portal glosses as “Electric Wingfoil”, so ask the school which board it means.

Venice and Rome, the city break questions

We found no eFoil school or rental in Venice, the lagoon, Jesolo or Caorle (searched 25 October 2026). That is not a ban. We could not read the lagoon's own navigation regulation, so we print no rule for it, and the closest boards we know of are at Grado, Lignano Sabbiadoro and on Lake Garda.

Wooden Venetian water taxi speeding across the lagoon with the city low on the horizon; boat traffic, not an eFoil
Water taxi traffic on the Venice lagoon.

Near Rome, Lake Bracciano has two operators. WayOutZone sells an intro at €150 and rents to experienced riders for €110, members only, and Top Jet Surfing in Trevignano has packages from €89 for 30 minutes (read 28 September 2026). The lake's regulation bans combustion engines and allows electric propulsion units; we class an eFoil as one of them, though the text does not say so.

One national code, many district texts

The base layer is the Codice della nautica da diporto (D.Lgs. 18 July 2005 n. 171). Its art. 27 c. 3 lett. c lets “tavole autopropulse o non autopropulse”, boards with or without their own propulsion, navigate within one mile of the coast (1,852 m). The eFoil goes unmentioned there and in every other national text, and we read it as such a board. Paragraph 6 of that article hands the navigation and use of these craft to the locally competent maritime or inland navigation authority. So the district text decides, lake by lake and harbor office by harbor office.

Art. 39 c. 1 requires a boat license beyond six miles from the coast, on any moto d'acqua, and within six miles above 30 kW (40.8 CV). It names no electric motor. Below those thresholds no license is needed, but the driver of a natante must be 16 (c. 3 lett. b), an age that c. 4 waives for training at national federation schools and the Lega Navale. None of this names the eFoil, so we apply the thresholds to it ourselves. Art. 3 c. 1 lett. h defines a moto d'acqua as a craft under 4 m driven by a water jet pump; as we read it, a propeller eFoil lacks the jet.

Insurance and flotation come from two further texts. D.Lgs. 7 September 2005 n. 209, art. 123 c. 1, requires third party liability insurance for motorised pleasure craft in public waters, which we read as covering an eFoil; schools include cover in the lesson, and a visitor with their own board should ask their insurer. Allegato V to D.M. 146/2008, as replaced by D.M. 17 September 2024 n. 133 (section C, point 2), puts users of boards, kites, jet skis and “unità similari” in a buoyancy aid of class 50 or more at any distance from shore. The eFoil is not named there either, so it reaches the board only by our interpretation.

Where a district marks access corridors, cross the swimmers' band inside one, slowly, before you fly. Rimini's 1,000 m set against the national one mile leaves, by our arithmetic, a strip between 1,000 m and 1,852 m. As we read the national texts, an eFoil under 30 kW inside six miles falls below the license thresholds. Districts still add an age, insurance or a helmet.

Our reading of the texts named here, checked on the dates given; not legal advice. Ask the school or read the district ordinance before riding alone.

Renting on the spot, or bringing a board

Flying in, you rent. IATA guidance says lithium batteries over 160 Wh are usually not permitted on passenger aircraft (the eFoil battery guide gives board capacities). The ferries are no clearer. Moby and GNV do not address a loose board battery, and GNV's conditions (art. 9.4) cover electric vehicles only, so ask the carrier in writing before you book a crossing to Sardinia or Sicily with a board.

Drivers from the north have two obvious roads. The Swiss A2 through the 16.9 km Gotthard road tunnel leads to Lugano, Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. The A22 Brenner motorway reaches Garda at the exits Rovereto sud/Lago di Garda Nord and Affi/Lago di Garda Sud, then carries on toward the Adriatic.

Renting without a lesson is the exception. Riders who already fly can take an hour at CSN Viareggio (€140) or at Nido Surf in Posada (€105). For other Mediterranean trips see eFoil in Croatia and eFoil in Greece; the eFoil price guide covers what a board costs to buy.

Frequently asked questions

Where in Italy should a beginner book a first eFoil lesson?

Lake Garda, for choice. Our list holds 15 eFoil offers on its Lombard and Veneto shores, more than Como and Maggiore put together, and the water is calmest in the morning. Avoid the Trentino tip around Riva and Torbole, where electric foils are banned. On the sea, Locals Crew in Salento and NEM Napoli both teach all year.

What about Venice, are there boards in the lagoon?

Not that we could find. The closest boards we know of are at Grado, Lignano Sabbiadoro and on Lake Garda.

Where can I eFoil in Sicily?

At Taormina and near Sciacca. Foil Taormina in Mazzarò runs a €200 beginner course, and Sicily Jet Surfing sells an hour for €100 on a Waydoo or €150 on a Lift (list prices, read September 2026). Sealosophy works from the Rocco Forte Verdura resort near Sciacca, and non guests can book with 24 hours' notice.

What does an hour on an eFoil cost in Italy?

€95 to €249 for an hour of rental on Lake Garda (list prices, read September 2026), and the board and the net riding time change along with the price. Most single lessons elsewhere sit between €45 for 30 minutes at Alghero and €250 for MAKA's session of about 80 minutes in Sorrento (read October 2026).

Does Italian law treat an eFoil like a jet ski?

Not as we read it. Article 3 of Legislative Decree 171/2005 defines a moto d'acqua as a craft under 4 m driven by a water jet pump, and a propeller eFoil has no jet. No national text names the eFoil, though, and a few local ordinances define it with jet propulsion, so the text of the district you ride in has the last word. That is our reading, not legal advice.

Do Italian bases insist on a lesson before they rent?

Nearly all of them. Porto Cervo Luxury Sport wants a first lesson to prove you can ride alone, Nido Surf in Posada puts beginners through a lesson, Foil Taormina rents only after its course and the Lecco club only to trained members. Lakeview in Cannobio rents after a paid introduction lesson. Riders who already fly can rent outright at a few places, such as CSN Viareggio and Nido Surf.
