A coached hour is what the coast sells
Between Saint-Tropez and Menton, eFoil bases work from beaches and from ports, and a few firms bring the boards to a villa, a hotel or a yacht. At most of them the first session follows one pattern. You get a briefing, a wetsuit and a vest, and an instructor stays close while you learn to rise onto the foil. An hour is the usual length.
Across the operators we checked, a first hour cost €95 to €190, and €150 came up more often than any other figure (our computation from list prices read in September and October 2026). Shorter formats start at ten minutes. The eFoil price guide covers what the boards cost if a holiday turns into a purchase plan, and our Barcelona guide covers the same sea on the Spanish side.
Plain rental, a board and no instructor, is the exception. Solo time exists at MILABOAT, at Sun Force and at Efoil Flying's own base. E-foil Grimaud and the Cap d'Ail base hand a board over only to riders who have the level, and E-FOIL PACA in Antibes does not rent at all, for safety. So for a first-timer, rental on this coast means a supervised hour in all but name, as far as we can tell from the offers.
Nissa Foil Club, the Lift network in Cannes and around the gulf, La Moune and efoil.today all name Lift, the brand you meet most often here. Fliteboard turns up at Custom Motors France, Efoil Flying and efoil.today, Awake at Custom Motors France and Sun Force. SiFly comes in only through its own dealer locator, which lists Cannes Jeunesse and MILABOAT; neither names a brand on its own site.

Calm bays for a first lesson, open water once you fly
Your level decides the bay more than the town does. A first lesson goes best where a boat or an instructor stays beside you on calm morning water. Once you fly and turn, you want open water where the limit lets the foil lift, and a base that lets you out alone.

| Where | Base | Suits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cannes-La Bocca | Lift network, plage des Dauphins | First lesson | Boat briefing, then the bay |
| Mandelieu | AIRXKITE | First lesson | A safety boat stays with you |
| Juan-les-Pins | E-FOIL PACA, port Gallice | First lesson | Lessons only, from age 12 |
| Saint-Tropez gulf | Cogolin, Gassin, Grimaud, La Croix-Valmer | First lesson | Calm mornings, municipal eFoil zones |
| Nice | Nissa Foil Club, LiftFoils | Either | Mind the airport buoys |
| Beaulieu-sur-Mer | MILABOAT | Confident rider | Solo half hour or hour |
| Cap d'Ail | Jetski French Riviera | Confident rider | Solo once confirmed |
| Pampelonne | Sun Force | Confident rider | Solo rental, mornings advised |
| Off Cannes and Cap d'Antibes | Ask your base | Confident rider | 10 knots beyond 300 m |
| Villefranche | No base | Neither | 5 knots in the inner roadstead |
The Lift network says its foil lifts from 12 km/h, about 6.5 knots. We draw one conclusion from that. Where the limit is 5 knots or less, you can move but not fly, and that covers the 300 m strip, every access channel, the anse du Croûton, the inner roadstead of Villefranche, the baie des Canebiers and the channels between the Lérins Islands.
Further out the numbers open up. Beyond 300 m you get 10 knots off Cannes and Cap d'Antibes, 15 off the Esterel coast and 20 in the gulf of Saint-Tropez. On our reading of that lift speed, all three leave room to fly.
Two outfits in Nice, and the buoys off the runway
Nissa Foil Club, at 83 Quai des États-Unis, rides in the Baie des Anges on four Lift eFoils. In October 2026 it charged €190 per person for an hour, the top of the coast's range, and that one price buys either a coached lesson or free rental. The board, a helmet, a wetsuit as needed, the briefing, follow-up on the water and photos and videos are all included. The club publishes no age or weight limit. Nice's beaches are pebble, which you will notice when you carry a board.
The LiftFoils network, which also trades as eFoil Côte d'Azur, meets its Nice riders on the port. After a technical briefing of about 15 minutes and a wetsuit, vest and remote, a boat takes you to sheltered water for 45 minutes to an hour with an instructor, in a beginner mode capped at 12 km/h. No price for Nice is published.
Nice plan N°113/2026 of 4 May 2026 sets two swimming zones, Carras to the Paillon and the Paillon to the Ponchettes, adds two towed-sports channels and bans jet skis in the band. As we read it, the swimming zones fill most of the strip, so ask your base how it crosses. Habitat order N°015/2026 also closes the “Promenade des Anglais” zone (0.74 km of shore on the Negresco side, out to 300 m) and the Pointe des Sans-Culottes east of Cap de Nice to registered craft, fishing and mooring. It neither bans nor permits eFoils; we would stay out of both.
The firmest line is at the airport. Order N°146/2019 of 17 June 2019 closes the water along the runway, marked by yellow spherical buoys, to registered craft and to unregistered craft from the open sea inside 300 m, and to all navigation and mooring beyond it. Never ride between the yellow buoys.
No base in Villefranche, solo hours in Beaulieu
Order N°252/2022 of 8 August 2022 holds all craft to 5 knots beyond 300 m north of a line from the pointe Madame to the pointe Pilone, so the inner roadstead of Villefranche-sur-Mer is 5-knot water throughout, and its access channels are closed to unregistered craft. No eFoil base works there. The nearest is in Beaulieu, and that is where we would ride from.
MILABOAT Watersports works from the baie des Fourmis beach in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, close to the Royal Riviera hotel, and sells solo time. Its September 2026 list showed 30 minutes alone, without an instructor, at €120 and a solo hour at €190. A 45-minute lesson with an instructor cost €160. For a first go, take the lesson.
The Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat plan, N°170/2026 of 1 June 2026, has four swimming zones and three 5-knot access channels for registered motor craft, one of them at the pontoon near the hotel Riviera, south of the baie des Fourmis. On either side, the Beaulieu (N°79/2020) and Èze (N°97/2020) swimming zones bar unregistered motor craft coming from the open sea. Off Cap Ferrat a defence listening range under order N°42/2025 bans mooring and diving but allows surface transit, so cross it without stopping.
Cap d'Ail for Monaco, little room at Menton
Monaco has no eFoil operator of its own that our search turned up. The nearest base sits in the port of Cap d'Ail next door, where Jetski French Riviera runs an eFoil it calls EFLITE. Beginners learn with an instructor, and a confirmed rider may go out alone from a 30-minute session. There is no eFoil price on its site.
If you are staying in Monaco, two firms come to you. Custom Motors France, from Villeneuve-Loubet, delivers Fliteboard and Awake boards around Antibes, Cannes, Nice and Monaco, with an initiation from €150 for 30 minutes (October 2026). Efoil Flying Côte d'Azur covers the coast from Monaco to Saint-Tropez.
Cap d'Ail plan N°78/2026 of 31 March 2026 sets a 5-knot access channel, swimming zones and a mooring zone at the plage Mala, plus swimming zones at Pissarelles and Marquet. East of Monaco, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin's plan N°69/2026 runs several swimming zones up to the edge of Monaco's waters.
Menton has no operator either, as far as we could find. Its plan, N°175/2026 of 2 June 2026, makes a swimming zone 1,491 m wide along the Gorbio, Borrigo, Carei and Fossan beaches, out to 300 m, with one access channel at Borrigo for registered motor craft. Add a swimming zone at the Sablettes, no mooring in the baie de Garavan and no jet skis, and we read the Menton shore as leaving little room to launch.
Around Antibes the boards leave from ports
Antibes Jet Spot works inside port Camille Rayon, behind the théâtre de la mer in Golfe-Juan, and listed €150 an hour with an instructor in October 2026. The Vallauris Golfe-Juan plan, N°162/2025 of 4 June 2025, gives no shore access channel for eFoils, so by our reading the port is the way out.
E-FOIL PACA, at port Gallice on the Juan-les-Pins side, teaches and never rents. A semi-private hour cost €149 per person in October 2026, with two riders at most. You must be 12 or older and weigh no more than 120 kg, and a session can be called off the same morning, usually when the wind is above force 4.
Antibes plan N°354/2026 of 24 August 2026 puts 5-knot access channels at Antibes-les-Pins and on the Grande plage of Juan-les-Pins, with no stopping or mooring in them. E-FOIL PACA, as we see it, leaves by the port channel. Off Cap d'Antibes, order N°086/2018 of 17 May 2018 allows 10 knots beyond 300 m, while order N°316/2026 of 6 August 2026 holds a zone in the anse du Croûton to 5 knots.
Cannes works from both ends of the bay
Forget the Croisette. Cannes plan N°251/2026 of 2 July 2026, art. 1.1.1, makes the water along it a permanent swimming zone up to 300 m deep, from the Albert Edouard jetty to the port Canto. We read that as no place to launch, and no base we found tries.
In the west, the Lift network base is on the plage des Dauphins in Cannes-La Bocca, by the port du Béal. Walk in from the beach, not through the port. A discovery hour cost €150 in October 2026 and riders under 15 paid €120, with equipment, wetsuit, instructor and insurance included.
Close by, AIRXKITE teaches from Mandelieu from age 12, and its safety boat stays with you the whole time. Two people paid €280 for a 1 h 30 slot, welcome and briefing included. In the east, and in summer only, Cannes Jeunesse runs accompanied outings from the Mourre Rouge at €95 an hour.
Around the Lérins Islands, order N°036/2016 of 22 March 2016 sets 10 knots beyond 300 m in the rade de Cannes, 5 knots in the channels between the islands and 3 knots elsewhere between them. Temporary orders for works and events come on top, so ask your base which ones apply that week.
The gulf of Saint-Tropez and its eFoil zones
Cogolin and Gassin are the only towns we found on this coast whose beach plans name a municipal “zone EFOIL” (Cogolin N°049/2026 of 10 March 2026, Gassin N°169/2026 of 1 June 2026), closed by the préfet maritime to registered craft. We take that to mean the gulf is the one part of the Riviera where the rules set water aside for eFoils.
Efoil Saint Tropez, part of the Lift network, listed a one-hour initiation at €120 in Cogolin, with a 10-minute briefing (September 2026). The network points families to the Sainte-Maxime and Beauvallon side. Its La Croix-Valmer beach, it warns, fills up in summer, so come early.
The La Moune sailing school in Gassin teaches on Lift boards and rents to intermediate riders. On Pampelonne, Sun Force, an official Awake test center, rents solo at €100 for 30 minutes and advises mornings (October 2026). E-foil Grimaud, on the plage de Port Grimaud, starts at €70 for a 30-minute initiation (September 2026).
For a villa or a yacht, efoil.today delivers round the gulf with a certified instructor, from €30 for 10 minutes. Efoil Flying Côte d'Azur charges €85 a half hour for at least two riders, plus a travel charge it does not put a figure on (both September 2026).
Pampelonne's band is 5-knot water. Beyond 300 m, order 297/2026 (art. 3), taken under order 11/95, holds all craft to 5 knots in the baie des Canebiers and from La Rabiou to the pointe de Capon, while 11/95 allows 20 knots in the rest of the gulf and the baie de Bonporteau. Big regattas such as Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez bring temporary orders that close part of the water.
Heading west of the peninsula, keep clear of the islands. Within 600 m of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Bagaud, motor boards need the national park director's authorization (orders 116/2023 and 117/2023), and no Var operator says it holds one.
What the Préfecture maritime allows
At sea a French eFoil counts as a “planche nautique à moteur”, a motorised board with or without a foil (Division 240, wording in force since 7 June 2026). You ride in daylight only and stay within 2 nautical miles of a shelter. Beyond 300 m you need a 50 N buoyancy aid, or a suit that qualifies, and a waterproof light good for 6 hours.
The Préfecture maritime Méditerranée's arrêté-cadre N°109/2024 of 30 April 2024 sets 5 knots in the 300 m strip, all year, buoyed or not (art. 2.1), and 5 knots within 100 m of a diver's flag (art. 6). Its access channels belong to registered motor craft and stay closed to unregistered craft unless the town's plan allows them, and towed-sports channels take only towed craft (art. 9.5.1.1). Out to 300 m the mayor regulates swimming and unregistered craft launched from a beach (CGCT L.2213-23), which we read as putting your board under the town's text.
No préfet plan between Théoule and Antibes names the eFoil or a foil, and jet ski clauses are not eFoil clauses. In the Cannes and Mandelieu plans (art. 6 of each), zones bind once they are buoyed. The 5-knot strip, the Lérins zones and the 10-knot zone off Cap d'Antibes carry no such condition. Breaches fall under the code pénal (131-13, R. 610-5), the code des transports (L. 5242-2, L. 5243-6) and décret n° 2007-1167 of 2 August 2007, art. 6 and 7, and we found no fixed eFoil fine.
The whole coast lies in the Pelagos sanctuary shared by France, Monaco and Italy, and order N°384/2023 of 20 November 2023, art. 3 b, bans approaching marine mammals closer than 100 m. Every local plan cited here is the one in force when we checked. This section is our plain-English summary, not legal advice.
Water temperature, the sea breeze and the mistral

| Month | Sea |
|---|---|
| January | 14.6 °C |
| February | 13.8 °C |
| March | 13.8 °C |
| April | 15.1 °C |
| May | 18.0 °C |
| June | 21.8 °C |
| July | 24.9 °C |
| August | 25.6 °C |
| September | 23.7 °C |
| October | 21.0 °C |
| November | 18.2 °C |
| December | 16.3 °C |
Around Saint-Tropez the sea runs about 13 °C in February and 23 °C in August, a little cooler than Villefranche at the height of summer.
Wind is the bigger question. Météo-France normals for Nice airport (1991 to 2020) give a mean of 3.3 m/s, about 12 km/h, in June and July and 4.1 m/s in March and October, with 5.0 days of gusts at 16 m/s or more in March against 2.2 in July. By day a sea breeze blows in from the sea, usually starting late in the morning and strongest in the afternoon, at 15 to 30 km/h on average. AIRXKITE rides in the morning, Sun Force tells you to come early, and the Lift network speaks of calm mornings in the gulf.
The mistral, from the north-west to the north, blows more often in winter and early spring. Tide hardly matters here. On land, the same normals put the mean daily high at 13.3 °C in January, 27.5 °C in July and 27.9 °C in August. Rain is scarce in July (13.6 mm) and heaviest in October (127.9 mm) and November (138.4 mm). Most bases run from spring to autumn. Cannes Jeunesse opens in summer only, while the Lift network at La Bocca says it rents all year.
Tram, train and bus to the bases
Tram line 2 runs from Nice airport to the port in 26 minutes, and the port is where the LiftFoils sessions meet. Going west, the regional trains stop at Cannes-la-Bocca, Golfe-Juan-Vallauris and Juan-les-Pins, which look to us like the closest stations to the plage des Dauphins, port Camille Rayon and port Gallice.
For the Mourre Rouge in Cannes, get off the bus at Esprit Violet; there is free parking nearby. ZOU! trains also run east to Menton, 42 km from the airport.
