Lake Como

Six operators at five bases and not one in Bellagio. The schools sit at the ends of the lake, the ferries own the middle, and the Breva owns the afternoon

Last updated:

Six operators on an upside-down Y

On a map Lake Como is an inverted Y. The Como branch runs south west, the Lecco branch south east, and the upper lake carries on north, 46 km in all from Gera to Como. With 145 km² it is only the third Italian lake by surface, yet the first by perimeter and by depth, 410 m between Cavagnola and Nesso.

Six operators teach eFoil from five places. Faggeto Lario and Colonno are on the Como branch, Lecco has its own branch, Dervio on the upper lake has two clubs, and Gera Lario sits at the northern tip. Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and the Tremezzina villages in the middle of the lake have none. Our guess is traffic: motorboats crowd the central lake, line ships cross between those towns many times a day, and the Lario rules keep motorized boards off the routes they run. So the schools sit at the ends and on the side branches.

You may also come across eFoil Riders, a network of Fliteboard schools with its own Lake Como lesson page. It is not a separate base. EFOIL.FUN names it as a partner school, and we found no launch spot of its own on the lake.

As for boards, EFOIL.FUN and D Lago Foiling ride Fliteboard, Lecco and Watersports Center Dervio show SiFly among their partners, and WEC and Tabo name no brand. Nobody here hands a board to a stranger. The clubs that rent at all want to see a finished course, an instructor check or a riding level first.

Picking your shore, from Colonno to Gera Lario

Where you stay narrows the choice before any price does.

Colonno on the west shore, with a beach for whoever came along

EFOIL.FUN works from Colonno, south of Tremezzina and about 30 minutes from Como. Pick it when the rest of the group would sooner watch than ride. They get private beach access with a shower and towels, a sun terrace, a swim off the beach or a SUP to rent. You can drive (there is a free parking garage nearby) or arrive by public boat. The fleet is six Fliteboard boards, and the team speaks Italian, English, French and German.

The Flite Experience costs €200 per person for 90 minutes with an instructor, helmet, wetsuit and impact vest. The Flite Doubler (€380) is two 90 minute rides on one day, and the Flite Week (€800) gives you five. Bookings take riders from 16 and up to 110 kg; the FAQ accepts juniors from 14 with a parent supervising. EFOIL.FUN rides at weekends and asks guests to carry their own personal insurance for liabilities, accidents and injuries.

One instructor, one rider at Faggeto Lario

The Water Experience Center sits at Faggeto Lario on the east side of the Como branch, between Como and Bellagio. WEC teaches eFoil only as a private one-to-one hour, from €160 (read in October 2026). There are no group sessions. Every eFoil session starts from the Faggeto Lario base, and WEC can arrange a transfer there from elsewhere on the lake; its other pickup points around the lake serve the boat tours, not the board, as we read the site. Bring an ID card or passport.

Board sport experience helps. Whether WEC requires any is unclear, because its English and Italian pages disagree, so ask when you book. If WEC judges conditions unsafe, you get a voucher or a partial refund.

Lecco: join the club, take the course, then rent

Efoil Experience Lecco is a club at Camping Rivabella, and it runs like one. The TryEfoil Experience costs €130, the full course €350 for three sessions, and a lesson for any level €150. Only riders who finished the course can rent, at €95 a session. Membership comes first, with cover included, and you need a medical certificate for non-competitive sport; minors also need a parent's consent. The €15 annual AICS card is included in the full course and the €150 lesson. The club lists SiFly among its partners. The Breva is felt most on this branch, so morning slots matter here.

Two clubs and a railway station in Dervio

Dervio lies on the east shore of the upper lake, about 20 minutes from Lecco and an hour from Milan, and the train stops there. D Lago Foiling, a Flite partner, sells a one hour Starter, a two hour Amateur session and a pack of three lessons, each for one rider or a couple. Its site publishes no prices. Experienced riders can take a board out alone for an hour once an instructor has checked them. Membership is €15 a head and covers insurance and the AICS card. Courses need a medical certificate, which the club can help you arrange. The club works mainly from mid May to mid September.

Watersports Center Dervio Como Lake prints every price. Its course runs 45 minutes for €75, 15 of them theory and 30 on the water. A private 1 h 30 costs €105, two people on one foil €130, two on two foils €190. From intermediate level you can rent for €90 an hour. Add a €20 season card, a medical certificate for courses and a minimum age of 18. On request the club delivers the eFoil to your home, your hotel or a lake access point.

Gera Lario, the windy north, ridden early

Tabo Surf Center calls Gera Lario the windiest area of the lake, thanks to the Breva. The spot has a shallow sandy shoal, a big car park and changing rooms with showers, about an hour (95 km) from Milan. Tabo says its eFoil water is at its best in the morning and lies outside the navigation routes, and the school starts early to beat the Breva. The afternoon, as we read it, belongs to the wing riders. A private lesson costs €100 for 30 minutes or €200 for an hour. Helmet and buoyancy aid are included; the wetsuit is not, and you need one. The CSEN card adds €5 a year, and Tabo publishes no eFoil rental. The Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola reserve covers the northern end; we could not retrieve its water rules, so ride where the school puts you.

Stay in Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio or Tremezzina, ride elsewhere

No eFoil school works the middle of the lake. Bellagio Water Sports at Pescallo offers kayak, SUP, rowing and cycling, no foil, and it shortens its Sunday hours because heavy motorboat traffic makes the water dangerous for kayaks and SUPs. We found no base in Cadenabbia either.

From the west shore the nearest base is Colonno. From the east shore it is Dervio, north of Varenna, and WEC will transfer guests to Faggeto Lario. Line ships cross between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia many times a day, and the ordinance bans riding on line routes. Read the two together and, as we see it, a board between those four towns would be riding on a line route.

Ordinanza 1/2026, and the 1997 order beneath it

One body governs navigation on the whole lake, the Autorità di Bacino del Lario e dei Laghi Minori in Menaggio. Its Ordinanza n. 1/2026 of 20 February 2026 names the eFoil among the “natanti minori”, small recreational craft in its English version, and no act we read bans it anywhere on the lake. Article 4 sets the conduct rules and imports three points of the O.P.G.R. of 3 July 1997 n. 58600. Como lies wholly in Lombardy, and the 1992 navigation agreement between Switzerland and Italy covers Maggiore and Lugano only, going by its title. We read no cross-border layer on this lake.

Texts read on 26 September and 24 October 2026; summaries and readings are ours.

The texts leave gaps close to shore. No act settles whether an eFoil may use or cross the 50 m band, so leave and land the way your instructor shows you. Bathing zones marked as such are closed to all navigation. The speed limits in the table are written for motor craft, not stated as an eFoil rule. Title IV also asks for a calm lake, and applying that to eFoils is our reading.

Isola Comacina, off Sala Comacina on our map, and the Laghetto di Piona are zones of particular danger. Motor craft may only idle there, and water skis, jet skis “and similar sports” are banned. Nothing says whether that covers an eFoil, so stay out of both. Swimmers may swim freely within 50 m of the shore. Farther out they need a red float with a flag or a clearly visible float, unless a boat stays within 5 m, and the ordinance warns of steep drop offs near the shore, currents, wind waves and cold water.

Local orders sit on top. The city of Como set its own speed and access limits for its basin (ordinance 247 of 24 June 2026), so ask your school, and summer closures on parts of the lake are posted on the news page of autoritabacinolario.it. Every school and rental must also post the safety rules, fly a red flag in bad conditions, hand out approved safety gear and keep a craft ready to pick up anyone in trouble (O.P.G.R. 58600/1997, Title I point 21).

National law is quieter. D.Lgs. 18 July 2005 n. 171 leaves inland use to the local authority (art. 27 c.6), and its art. 39 sets license thresholds (30 kW or 40.8 CV inland) and an age of 16 for unlicensed craft. No text applies those expressly to an eFoil, and no Lombard act we read asks a board rider for a license or an age; that is our reading. D.Lgs. 7 September 2005 n. 209 art. 123 c.1 requires third party cover for pleasure craft with a motor, and we read it as reaching eFoils. The Como clubs bundle that cover with membership or the course, while EFOIL.FUN asks you to bring your own.

Texts cited as they stood when we checked them in September and October 2026. This is our interpretation, not legal advice; the Lario authority and your school have the last word.

Como or Garda for a first flight

Side by side, Como looks slight. It covers 145 km² and runs about 46 km, a narrow inverted Y, where Garda, Italy's largest lake, spreads over 370 km², 51.5 km long and 17.5 km wide. The bigger difference is legal. On Lake Garda the rules depend on the region. Trentino bans motor navigation on its shore, so there is no eFoil at Riva or Torbole, while the Lombard ordinance names the eFoil. On Como one authority covers the whole lake, so one set of rules holds from Como to Gera Lario.

Choice is where Garda wins, with about 15 eFoil operators on its Lombard and Veneto shores against six on Como, none of them in the central towns. A holiday based in Bellagio or Menaggio means traveling to your lesson.

The winds rhyme. Garda's Pelèr blows from the north until about noon and the Ora from the south after it; Como has the gentler Tivano early and the Breva from late morning. On both lakes the answer is the same: fly early.

When the Breva arrives

Two winds share the day on Lake Como. The Tivano comes from the north east in the early morning until about 10.30, steady and not gusty, around 4 to 6 m/s by the reckoning of Windsurf Club Valmadrera. The Breva follows from the south, setting in from about 10.30 to 11. You feel it most on the Lecco branch, but it runs up the whole lake. It is rarely violent and settles around 7 to 8 m/s, though a strong Breva can reach 10 to 12.

Other winds end a session outright. The Menaggino brings violent gusts with summer storms. The Ventone blows from the north, often in spring and after bad weather, and gusts at 40 to 80 km/h by the club's figures (the tourist portal says 40 to 60).

Those figures sit well with what Tabo and Watersports Center Dervio publish, and our reading of all three is simple: the calm morning is for the eFoil, the afternoon Breva for wing riders, above all on the upper lake.

The season runs from spring to early autumn, with high summer at its core, and each school sets its own dates; no authority fixes one. We found no published monthly series for the water temperature. The ordinance warns of cold water, and the schools supply a wetsuit or tell you to bring one.

From your hotel to the water

Trains serve the east shore well. The line from Milan via Lecco to Colico stops at Varenna Esino, Bellano and Dervio, and the TILO S10 runs from Lugano and Chiasso to Como. By car, Dervio is about 20 minutes from Lecco on the SS36. Gera Lario has a big car park, and Colonno a free garage near the base.

In the middle of the lake the line ships link Cadenabbia, Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna in 10 to 30 minutes, with places limited to what each boat can carry. Car ferries between those towns take motorbikes, cars and campers. Navigazione Laghi charges €1 extra per passenger, item of luggage or vehicle when you buy the ticket on board (autumn 2026 timetable), and some runs carry passengers only.

Owners thinking of bringing a board should read the luggage rules first. Anything over 0.80 m travels only as special luggage at the captain's judgement, hydrofoils and catamarans take nothing over 0.60 m, and potentially dangerous goods stay ashore. We read that as a reason to book a school that supplies the board.

From Bellagio to an eFoil lesson and back

  1. Book the first session of the day at Dervio before you leave home, above all for July and August.
  2. Take the line ship or the car ferry from Bellagio to Varenna.
  3. Ride the train north from Varenna Esino to Dervio.
  4. Fly before the Breva fills in from about 10.30.
  5. Return the way you came, with the afternoon free.

From Como it is shorter: half an hour by road to Colonno, or a WEC transfer to Faggeto Lario. Fleets are small and sessions private, so we would not leave the booking until you arrive.

Paperwork varies by club. Most want a membership card (€15 at Lecco and D Lago, €20 a season at Watersports Center Dervio, €5 for the CSEN card at Tabo). Lecco, D Lago and Watersports Center Dervio ask for a medical certificate for non-competitive sport. WEC and EFOIL.FUN want an ID card or passport, and EFOIL.FUN and Lecco have you sign a waiver. Tabo expects you to bring a wetsuit. All six operators publish English pages.

In an emergency, dial 118 and ask for an ambulance.

Frequently asked questions

Which towns on Lake Como have an eFoil school?

At five places, run by six operators: Faggeto Lario and Colonno on the Como branch, Lecco on its own branch, Dervio on the upper lake (two clubs) and Gera Lario at the northern tip. We found no eFoil base in Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Cadenabbia or Tremezzina. From a room in the middle of the lake you drive, take the train up the east shore, or let WEC transfer you to Faggeto Lario.

I'm staying in Bellagio. Is there an eFoil base in town?

No. Nobody teaches eFoil from Bellagio, and its water carries the line ships. Ride from Colonno, Faggeto Lario or Dervio instead.

Does the Lario authority ask eFoil riders for a license?

No Lombard act we read asks for one. Ordinanza 1/2026 lists the eFoil among the small recreational craft and sets conduct rules instead (daylight, life jacket, 10 m between riders). That is our reading; the clubs add a membership card and, for courses, a medical certificate.

Will a Como club let me take a board out on my own?

Only once it knows you can ride. Lecco rents only to members who finished its course, D Lago Foiling hands over a board for an hour after an instructor check, Watersports Center Dervio rents from intermediate level, and Tabo publishes no eFoil rental at all.

What is the cheapest eFoil lesson on Lake Como, and the dearest?

From €75 for the 45 minute course at Watersports Center Dervio to €200 for a private hour with Tabo at Gera Lario, by list prices read on 24 October 2026. WEC starts at €160 for its private hour and Lecco charges €130 for the TryEfoil Experience.

Should a beginner pick Como or Garda?

Garda if you want choice: roughly 15 operators against Como's six. Como if you want simple rules, with one authority and one ordinance from Como to Gera Lario that names the eFoil and bans it nowhere. On either lake we would ride in the morning; that is our reading of both wind patterns.
