Who should buy their own eFoil?
An eFoil of your own can be money well spent, especially for rental operations and surf schools. But they're not the only buyers: private riders, watersports fans, and yacht owners are bringing this exciting, innovative piece of sports gear on board too.
Board size
Budget aside, your skill level matters more than anything else. We steer beginners toward a bigger board, while advanced riders are better off on a smaller eFoil. A large board sits steadier on the water, which makes learning noticeably easier. Small boards turn more easily and run faster. The established eFoil brands know this, and each keeps several models in its lineup for exactly that reason.
Flite, for example, points beginners to the Flitescooter or the inflatable Flite AIR, and advanced riders to the PRO and the ULTRA. At Lift, the LIFT5 F is the easiest board to learn on, while the ultralight LIFTX belongs in experienced hands. Front wing size
The board isn't the only part that comes in sizes; the front wing does too. The smaller the wing, the more experience it demands. Larger wings suit beginners, schools, and rental fleets. In return, a small wing rewards you with extra speed.
If you weigh more than 80 kg (about 175 lbs), you need a larger front wing. That has a welcome side effect: it demands less power from the motor, so the battery lasts noticeably longer.
Mast length
With the mast, the logic flips: a shorter mast is the way to go for beginners, and longer masts are for more experienced riders. A short mast is easier to transport. The long one needs deeper water and handles choppier conditions well.
What else belongs on your checklist
Battery capacity and charging time should be on every buyer's list. Think about transport and storage as well: inflatable models travel easily but are harder to handle out on the water. Stick to proven brands such as Flite, Lift, or SiFly. And please don't order anything from Alibaba or AliExpress: the quality is miserable, the boards barely respond to steering, and they don't last long either.
