One school on Fornells Bay sells the island's eFoil lesson
Menorca's motor foil scene is small. Going through it in October 2026 we found one center that sells an eFoil lesson with a published price, one network that advertises lessons without a base, and two charter companies in Mahón that carry a board as an extra on their boats. Mallorca, a ferry ride away, has many more schools, and our Mallorca eFoil guide covers them.
The center is Wind Fornells, a wind and water sports base on the road from Mercadal up to Fornells. Windsurfing, sailing, SUP and wing foil are its daily business, and its kayak trips poke into the corners of the bay. The eFoil lesson is private, lasts 45 minutes and costs €92 per person, a list price read in October 2026, with the board, an impact vest, a helmet, a wetsuit and the tuition included.
Those 45 minutes go on getting the foil to lift, balancing once the board is in the air, and pumping with your feet. The school pitches the session at beginners and treats it as a step toward wing foiling. The booking pages leave one thing open. The lesson runs on an eFoil or on a Foil Drive, and nowhere does it say which one you will get, so ask when you book.
On windless days the school also rents out a Foil Drive, with no published price. Its wing school charges €72 per person for a level 1 lesson of 1 h 30 on its October 2026 list, and the rental wings are GA and Tabou, renewed every year. Wind Fornells counts May to October as its open months and takes bookings online. Showers, changing rooms, toilets, a small chandlery and a bar are on site, and the instructors speak fluent English.

Why Fornells Bay stays flat, and who else is on it
About 4 km deep from north to south and never more than 1.5 km wide, Fornells Bay is the second widest bay on Menorca after Mahón, closed and shallow. Only two villages sit on its shores, Fornells and Ses Salines, both in Es Mercadal. Nobody lives on the east side, La Mola de Fornells.
The schools on the bay describe flat water even in strong wind, sheltered from the open sea. They are just as plain about the downside: the wind inside is gustier, and in summer the bay fills with anchored yachts, dinghies, windsurfers and launches. Since an eFoil keeps 50 m from other craft (our reading of the rules further down), the moorings shrink your space in July and August.
Fornells village has no sand beach, only swimming spots such as Sa Caseta Blanca and Es Vivers. S'Arenalet and Cabra Salada, near the mouth, can be reached only from the sea. Cala Tirant is 2 to 3 km away, an open beach of reddish sand that turns into a wave spot in a northerly, fully onshore, mostly in winter and spring. On those days the closed bay next door stays flat, and that is the water you want on a motor foil.
A marine reserve under the board
The bay belongs to the Reserva Marina del Norte de Menorca, 5,085 hectares of the north coast declared by an order of 15 June 1999 (BOCAIB nº 81 of 24 June 1999). Its floor carries seagrass meadows of Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera noltii, and one of the reserve's two special protection zones lies inside it, with no fishing, no scuba diving and no anchoring on the seagrass. Every rule we found deals with fishing, diving and anchoring, so we read them as binding the support boat, not the board.
No mountains break the tramontana, so the month matters
Menorcans name eight winds, from Tramuntana and Gregal round to Ponent and Mestral. Gregal, xaloc and migjorn belong to summer, tramuntana and mestral to winter, and unlike Mallorca, with its Serra de Tramuntana, Menorca has no sheltering range.
The tramontana is a cold, turbulent wind from the north or north east. It shows most in September, October, December, January and February, and when it blows the whole north coast takes big seas while the south stays sheltered. Wind Fornells notes that it blows in summer as well, as a rule with less force. That milder summer pattern ends with the season, since September and October are already tramontana months. From April to July the north wind alternates with southerlies.
Wind Fornells puts a number on it. Across its May to October season, roughly half the days of each month bring enough wind for a foil or wing session, some of it thermal and hard to forecast. We read the other half as the motor foil's days, when a wing stays in its bag and an eFoil still flies. For the beaches, go north with a southerly and south with a northerly, keeping in mind that southerlies are much less frequent.

| Month | Sea temperature | On an eFoil |
|---|---|---|
| Late winter | about 14 °C | No published offer |
| May | about 18 °C | Wetsuit, school open |
| June | about 22 °C | Warm, school open |
| July | about 25 °C | Warm, busy bay |
| August | about 26 to 27 °C | Warmest, busy bay |
| September | about 25.5 °C | Warm, calmer than high summer |
| October | about 23 °C | Wetsuit, last month open |
| November | about 20 °C | No published offer |
One curve serves the whole island. Our pick is June or September, with warm water, the Fornells school open and September usually calmer than July and August. May and October are fine in a wetsuit. None of the Menorca offers we found states a winter season.
Mahón, where the eFoil travels on a charter boat
The port of Mahón on the east coast is one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean, more than six kilometers long, with cruise ships and cargo vessels coming and going. We see it as a base for boats, not a place to ride, and the Spanish rules, in our view, say as much. Craft able to exceed 10 knots, a class every current eFoil falls into, may not be ridden inside port precincts, marinas included. The board stays on deck until the boat is out.
Two charter companies on the harbor front carry eFoils. Boat Charter Menorca, on the Moll de Llevant, lists two Waydoo eFoils among its water toys, a Flyer One and a Flyer Evo Max Pro, with no published eFoil price. Its list also includes a Lampuga and an Awake Ravik, which are jetboards with no foil underneath; our electric surfboard page explains the difference.
Yacht Charter Menorca, also on the Moll de Levante, rents a Fliteboard Pro Carbon with its remote at €400 per day, its list price when we checked in October 2026, only as an extra to one of its boats. It recommends reserving toys in advance and mentions no instructor. Read that as a board for someone who can already fly one. If you have never stood on an eFoil, the lesson at Fornells is the sensible first day.

Mahón skippers sail the north coast with a southerly and the south coast with a northerly, so the boat goes looking for the lee before anyone puts a board in the water. An established tramontana can close the harbor mouth. A levante hits it hard.
eFoil Riders advertises Fliteboard lessons on Menorca but names no beach, base or price, so ask where and when. Anywhere outside Fornells, we have so far found no eFoil school with a base and a published price.
Elsewhere on the island we found no eFoil base
Menorca covers 701 km² and has two coasts with two characters. The north is high, bare and without shelter, the south gentler and greener. Ciutadella, at the western end, is the most populous municipality. Its port is about 1,170 m long and narrows from 110 m to 15 m. Passenger and cargo ships have used Son Blanc since 2011, and the rissagues, sudden swings in sea level, can damage boats. We found no eFoil operator there.
On the south coast, Cala Galdana is a shell shaped bay of roughly 300 by 40 m with motor boat, kayak and pedalo rental, among the busiest beaches of the summer. Son Bou is the island's longest beach, more than two kilometers open to the sea. A web search in October 2026 found no eFoil operator at Son Bou or Santo Tomás. On beaches like these the buoys decide where a board may go, and our reading is that in summer you ride outside the line and come in only through a buoyed channel, at 3 knots or less.
East of Fornells, Port d'Addaia is a 3.5 km inlet, shallow and closed off by the Addaia islets. On a map it looks made for a motor foil. Nobody rents or teaches one there that we know of.
Two centers teach foiling on wind power alone, which is handy on the windy half of the season. Vela Fornells at Ses Salines runs half day wing sessions on the bay from €95, mostly on Gong gear and inflatable boards. Surf & Sail Menorca, at Son Xoriguer beach near Ciutadella, lists a 1 hour lesson at €60. Both are list prices read in October 2026.
Riding a motorized board under Spanish and Balearic law
We found no Menorcan or Balearic rule written for eFoils, which leaves the board under Spanish state law. Royal Decree (RD) 1435/2010 lists “tablas deslizantes con motor”, motorized gliding boards, in article 2 q) among floating or beach craft, and article 3.2 exempts such craft from registration. We take that to mean an eFoil needs no registration and no number plate in Spain.
The 2 mile limit moved on 1 October 2026
The license question sits in article 10 of RD 875/2014. Its text in force from 11 January 2015 until 30 September 2026 allowed floating or beach craft without a license within 2 nautical miles of a port, marina or place of shelter. RD 1188/2025 of 26 December 2025 (BOE núm. 314, 30 December 2025) rewrote the article in its article cuarto, with effect from 1 October 2026. In that text the 2 miles run from the port, marina or beach of departure.

| Time of day | Daylight | Daylight |
| Minimum age | 18 | 18 |

Neither text, as we read it, asks for a license on an eFoil, whether the board is rented, used in a lesson or your own. The license change in the text in force from 1 October 2026 concerns rented small motorboats, as its preamble (section V) explains. An operator that asks for a license anyway is applying its own house rule.
Age is less tidy. Article 10, in both versions, makes 18 a condition of riding without a license. RD 1043/2003, article 3, also sets 18 years but lets 16 and 17 year olds ride with the signed consent of parents or guardians, carried at all times. For license free riding we go by article 10 and its 18, and no text says whether a supervised lesson changes that. A lower age quoted by a school is the school's statement, not the rule.
The kit list, and where the board may not go
Article 5 of RD 1043/2003 asks for a kill switch that stops the motor if the rider falls, and for an approved life jacket of at least 100 N with a whistle, a helmet that floats and protective goggles. Article 4 deals with insurance. Privately used craft need civil liability cover, rented ones accident insurance.
Article 6 covers craft able to exceed 10 knots, which on our reading includes a current eFoil. No riding inside buoyed bathing zones, in and out through buoyed channels at 3 knots or less, and where nothing is buoyed no riding in the 200 m coastal strip except to land or leave a beach at right angles, again at 3 knots or less. Port precincts and marinas are off limits, other craft get 50 m, and riding runs from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset in good visibility. Article 73 of the Reglamento General de Costas (RD 876/2014) adds that an unbuoyed bathing zone reaches 200 m from beaches and 50 m from the rest of the coast.
What the Balearic texts add
Ley 2/2015 de 27 de febrero (BOIB núm. 33, 07/03/2015), the Balearic sanctions law for nautical activities, covers nautical schools and boat and jet ski rental. We found no Balearic text on eFoils, and nothing says whether an eFoil school needs the Balearic teaching authorization. Anchoring over seagrass is banned by the Balearic Decreto 25/2018 de 27 de julio and by RD 191/2026 de 11 de marzo (BOE núm. 64, 13/03/2026), article 5.1, which protects Posidonia and Cymodocea meadows. Our view is that both bind the support boat and the charter yacht and leave the board alone.
Our reading of the official texts in the BOE, the BOIB and on caib.es as of October 2026, not legal advice. Check the current wording, and the buoys, before you ride.
What a Menorca eFoil day costs, and getting to Fornells
Two prices are public: €92 for the 45 minute lesson at Wind Fornells, and €400 per day for the Fliteboard that Yacht Charter Menorca adds to a boat hire, both read in October 2026. For scale, an instructed half hour on Mallorca starts at €85 with Wind Pirates, and our eFoil price guide sets those figures against what a board costs to buy. No operator on Menorca publishes an eFoil deposit.
We found no eFoil shop, dealer or demo point on the island. If a lesson leaves you wanting a board of your own, start with the buying guide or the used eFoil page.
Flying in, or crossing from Alcúdia
Menorca's only commercial airport lies 4 km from Mahón, with a bus to Mahón bus station all year. In season a bus runs from Mahón and Es Mercadal to Fornells, Cala Tirant, Son Parc and Port d'Addaia. By car, Fornells is about half an hour from the airport, and Ciutadella about 45 minutes from Mahón.
Menorca Lines links Alcúdia on Mallorca with Ciutadella in one to two hours, across a channel a little over 20 miles wide at its narrowest. On the far side sit Mallorca's northern eFoil schools around Alcúdia and Pollença, which our Mallorca page describes. Ibiza, further south in the same island chain, has its own Ibiza page. For a trip on the Atlantic instead, our Portugal page covers Cascais and the Algarve.
