eFoil in Barcelona

A city hour at the Port Olímpic, a beach school on the R1 at El Masnou, a port school in Sitges, and boat trips to Costa Brava coves picked on the day for flat water

Last updated:

City hour or Costa Brava cove

From Barcelona you can ride an eFoil two ways that share little beyond the board. In town you meet an instructor at the Port Olímpic, learn the board on land, ride for about an hour on open water outside the harbor and take the metro back. Some 125 km away by road, a skipper takes you out of Llafranc to a cove picked that morning for flat water, or a school in Roses rides the bay early, before the afternoon breeze arrives.

In between sit a beach school in El Masnou, a port school in Sitges and a beach operation in Blanes, all three on commuter lines. Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Platja d'Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols and L'Estartit had no live eFoil offer when we checked in October 2026, and the prices below are list prices read that month. If the board itself is new to you, our guide to how an eFoil works explains the motor, the wing and the remote first.

Which spot for which rider

How much time you have, and whether there is a car, narrows the list quickly.

One morning in town, no car

Water Toys Team (WTT) at the Port Olímpic is a metro ride from the center. Its intro session costs €129 for about an hour on the water, with showers, and wetsuits when the sea is cool. Anyone weighing a purchase can ask Waydoo Spain for one of its free test rides in Barceloneta.

A lesson where you are staying, or a board for the day

Efoil Club brings the board to you: €160 for a private hour, plus a call out fee in some cases, or €500 for a day rental with delivery. On a chartered yacht, WTT's day rental at €450 to €600 is the other option.

Half a day by train to a quieter beach

El Masnou on the R1 is the easiest. The station is on the beachfront, and Maresme Waves charges €90 for an hour two people can split. Sitges on the R2 Sud gives you Nau·Tech at €125. Blanes, further along the R1, adds a town bus; beginners there book the tandem hour, €180 for two, and advanced riders can take 30 minutes for €85 or an hour for €150.

Coves and clear water, with a car or a night away

Nautiq runs a two hour boat trip from Llafranc, €500 for up to ten people. The bay of Pals has rental sessions from €65, and in the Bay of Roses an instructed half hour starts at €90. On all three, the early slots are the calm ones, and a tramontana day is best left unbooked.

Coming back for more

Maresme Waves sells five hours on your own for €405 after a first session, Pals five sessions for €425, and Jetski Blanes packs of 5 hours (€500) and 10 hours (€800). Buyers can turn to WTT (Fliteboard and Awake), Waydoo Spain's demo, or Efoil Club and Empuria Sports, both on Lift. Our eFoil buying guide sets out what to compare.

Port Olímpic and Barceloneta

East of the commercial Port of Barcelona lies the marina that hosted the sailing events of the 1992 Olympics and was the main venue of the 2024 America's Cup. These days it is also home to the city's one fixed eFoil school. The TAKEOFF Barcelona site now forwards to Water Toys Team, so both names you may find in older reviews lead to one operator on the Passeig Marítim.

WTT is a Flite Authorised Partner, sells Fliteboard and Awake, and teaches on Fliteboard; its lessons use an inflatable board. After the intro comes an advanced session at €159. WTT also rents by the day. A Fliteboard Air costs €450, the Flitescooter €500 and the fiberglass Fliteboard €600, with a €1,500 deposit, and the school wants at least 12 hours' notice. With prior confirmation the board comes to a port of your choice between Port Ginesta and Palamós, and WTT will also run sessions aboard a yacht. Our Fliteboard review explains how the boards differ.

A free demo and a club that travels

Waydoo Spain, the brand's official distributor, keeps a demo point in Port Marina Vela, Barceloneta. The test ride is free, meant for people thinking of buying and arranged by WhatsApp; specs are on our Waydoo page. Efoil Club, a Lift Foils partner that also works on Mallorca and Ibiza, has no fixed beach. The instructor comes to you with a vest, a helmet and a briefing on land. Its €500 day rental adds a fast charger, delivery and a 24 hour emergency service, and each battery gives about two hours of riding.

How a city session differs from a cove

In Barcelona you start from a marina on an open, straight seafront. Spanish rules, as we read them, keep powered boards out of ports, marinas and buoyed bathing zones, so the harbor is where you gear up and the riding happens beyond it. There is no headland to hide behind. After midday the sea breeze and the summer garbí put chop on that water, so we would book the morning.

A cove on the Palafrugell coast works the other way round. You arrive by boat, and the skipper picks the cove on the day for flat water away from swimmers. The cost is time: Llafranc is about 1 h 40 from Barcelona by car on an empty road, and no train goes there. Nautiq says most beginners are riding above the water within 20 to 30 minutes; that is the operator's figure, not ours.

Both do the job for a first ride. Town slots into a city break, while the cove trades most of a day for smoother water.

Sitges and the Garraf on the R2 Sud

South of the city the coast has one eFoil address. Nau·Tech works from the Port d'Aiguadolç in Sitges, about 38 km and 40 minutes by car from Barcelona; no operator is based on the Castelldefels or Garraf beaches. An hour costs €125 with a professional instructor, helmet and life jacket, and an action camera is extra.

Bring ID or a passport for each rider and arrive 15 minutes early for registration and the safety briefing. No deposit is taken for the eFoil. Wetsuits matter most from September to May, and the business is seasonal, so check the calendar before a winter trip.

A beach school by the station in El Masnou

Between Montgat and the river Tordera, the Maresme coast has one confirmed eFoil school, and it teaches on the beach at El Masnou, 18 km from Barcelona, with the station on the beachfront. The Flying Xperience at Maresme Waves is one hour for €90, ridden alone or shared at 30 minutes each, and no experience is needed. Theory comes first on the sand; on the water you go from lying to kneeling to standing. The school suggests early morning or early evening.

After that first session, five hours on your own cost €405, which works out at €81 an hour. For a day board instead of a lesson, WTT delivers to the ports of El Masnou and Mataró when confirmed in advance.

The Costa Brava from Blanes to Roses

Girona province fronts the sea for 214 km, from Blanes, its southernmost town, to Portbou, and all of that is Costa Brava. The eFoil offer gathers around Blanes, the Palafrugell coves, the bay of Pals and the Bay of Roses. Lloret de Mar, the largest resort, is not on that list.

Blanes

About 70 km and an hour by car from Barcelona, Jetski Blanes starts from the beach by the Passeig de s'Abanell. The tandem course is 60 minutes for two at €180, for beginners and intermediates; advanced riders take the E-foil Express at €85 for 30 minutes or €150 for 60. Instructor and safety gear are included, you need ID, a €20 deposit per board comes back to you, and bookings go by WhatsApp.

Llafranc and the Palafrugell coves

Nautiq Barcelona sails a private boat out of Llafranc for two hours with up to ten people, and €500 covers boat, fuel, skipper, two boards ridden in turns, instructor and safety gear. The cove is usually Tamariu, Aiguablava, Cala Pedrosa or El Golfet, chosen on the day. Custom Sailing Costa Brava, in Palamós and Calella de Palafrugell, still shows a one line eFoil page with no prices; ask before counting on it.

The bay of Pals

e-Foil Experience Pals, sold through Lassdive, rides the bay of l'Estartit, Mas Pinell and Begur facing the Medes Islands on JetWave boards: €65 for 30 minutes, €95 for an hour, €180 for two people sharing a board, €425 for five sessions, groups up to four. Vest, helmet and leash are included. No instructor is listed, so we read it as a rental session, not a lesson. Arrive 30 minutes early.

The Bay of Roses

Aventura Nàutica teaches on Fliteboard from the port of Santa Margarida: €90 per person for a group half hour with a minimum number of riders, or €140 private. If the group does not fill, you get a new date, a voucher or another activity. Boats Mediterrani takes one or two people on one board by boat into the bay, with an instructor throughout, a support boat and photos, at €140 for 30 minutes or €195 for an hour. Empuria Sports in Empuriabrava sells Lift boards and lists courses on a page that looks out of date and shows no prices, so confirm first.

Marinada afternoons, tramontana days, a 13 °C February

An eFoil needs no wind, so the question here runs the other way: when is there little enough of it? In the warm months the marinada, the local sea breeze, blows onshore from mid morning until dark, strongest after midday, and the garbí from the southwest is a frequent summer visitor in Barcelona. Mornings and evenings are calmer. In autumn the wind turns steadier, often 10 to 18 knots, and winter brings east winds of 12 to 25 knots.

Sessions get called off for the llevant and the tramontana. The llevant, the east wind, raises heavy seas that can damage beaches and ports, as storm Gloria did in 2020, and schools postpone when an east swell hits the open beaches. The tramontana blows mainly in the Empordà, most often in winter, with gusts of 100 km/h or more around Cap de Creus; Barcelona, the Maresme and the southern Costa Brava are largely sheltered from it. In the Bay of Roses the summer thermal breeze usually picks up between noon and 2 pm and can reach about 25 knots, so ride there in the morning.

The sea is coldest in February, about 13 °C everywhere, and warmest in August. From Sitges to Blanes it stays above 20 °C from June to October, in the Bay of Roses only from July to September, and September is warmer than June.

WTT rents all year, and in the city eFoil works through much of the year on calm days. Nau·Tech is seasonal and Aventura Nàutica prices by season; on the Costa Brava, plan for late spring to October and ask before booking outside it.

Eighteen, by daylight, outside the 200 m strip

Real Decreto 1435/2010, de 5 de noviembre, art. 2 q, lists "tablas deslizantes con motor", motorized gliding boards, among the floating or beach craft, and art. 3.2 exempts that class from registration. As we read it, an eFoil therefore carries no plate. Real Decreto 875/2014, de 10 de octubre, art. 10, as amended by Real Decreto 1188/2025, de 26 de diciembre (BOE of 30 December 2025), says that from 1 October 2026 no license is needed for floating or beach craft by day, within 2 nautical miles of the port, marina or beach of departure, from age 18.

Real Decreto 1043/2003, de 1 de agosto, arts. 2 and 3, covers fast recreational motor craft other than jet skis, able to exceed 10 knots: the rider must be 18, or 16 with signed consent of parents or guardians. We take that to include an eFoil, so 18 is the age to plan around. Its art. 6 bans riding in buoyed bathing zones (use the channels, at no more than 3 knots), inside ports and marinas and within 50 m of other craft. Where nothing is buoyed, the 200 m strip is closed except to leave or reach the beach, straight out at no more than 3 knots. Riding runs from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset, in good weather and visibility, and the rider must stay visible from land. The Capitán Marítimo can change zones or times, or stop riding altogether.

Real Decreto 876/2014, de 10 de octubre, art. 73, sets that strip at 200 m off beaches and 50 m off the rest of the coast, at no more than 3 knots inside. Under Real Decreto Legislativo 2/2011, de 5 de septiembre, art. 307.2 l), breaking these rules is a serious infringement. For a lesson this means, on our reading, a meeting at the harbor, riding on open water outside it, and a school that handles the local buoyage.

Written for riders from the texts as they stood in October 2026, and no substitute for a lawyer. The operator or the Capitanía Marítima can answer for your own case.

Rodalies, metro or car: reaching each launch

For the Port Olímpic take metro L4 or tram T4 to Ciutadella Vila Olímpica; Barceloneta and Bogatell stations serve Barceloneta beach. Drivers leave the Ronda Litoral at exit 18 or 19, and the port car park fills in summer.

South, the R2 Sud runs from Estació de França via Castelldefels and Garraf to Sitges, which has regional trains too. North, the R1 follows the shore through El Masnou, Mataró, Arenys de Mar, Calella and Malgrat de Mar to Blanes, whose station lies southwest of town, a bus ride from the beach. Beyond it the line turns inland toward Girona, Figueres and Portbou, and no Rodalies train reaches Palamós, Llafranc, Pals or Roses.

By car, free flow, Palamós is 116 km and about 1 h 35 from Barcelona, Pals 129 km and about 1 h 40, Roses 156 km and about 1 h 55; real trips take longer. Girona Costa Brava airport, 74 km from Barcelona, is about 55 minutes from Llafranc and 1 h 05 from Roses.

Packing and booking

Swimwear, a towel and sun cream cover most of it. Nau·Tech and Blanes want ID, and where a deposit applies you need a card or cash. In the cold months Blanes expects a thermal top or wetsuit, while WTT and Nau·Tech lend wetsuits. WTT, Nau·Tech, Maresme Waves, Pals, Aventura Nàutica and Boats Mediterrani take bookings online; Nautiq, Jetski Blanes and Efoil Club work by WhatsApp. A spare day in the plan helps, and in summer the first slot of the morning comes before the breeze.

Frequently asked questions

Does Efoil Club have a beach of its own in Barcelona?

No. Efoil Club, a Lift Foils partner that also works on Mallorca and Ibiza, brings the board to you, at €160 for a private hour plus a possible call out fee. The one fixed school in town is Water Toys Team at the Port Olímpic.

What does a day with a rented board cost around Barcelona?

Water Toys Team asks €450 to €600 a day, booked 12 hours ahead and delivered to ports up to Palamós. Efoil Club charges €500 with delivery. Both are list prices read in October 2026.

Who may ride an eFoil off Barcelona without a boat license?

Anyone from 18, by day, within 2 nautical miles of the start. That is our reading of RD 875/2014 art. 10 as amended from 1 October 2026.

How cold does the sea get for an eFoil lesson near Barcelona?

February bottoms out near 13 °C, and WTT and Nau·Tech lend wetsuits for the cool months. From June to October the water stays above 20 °C between Sitges and Blanes.

Which eFoil lessons can you reach from Barcelona by train?

Three. The R1 stops on the beachfront at El Masnou and runs on to Blanes, where a town bus takes you to the beach, and the R2 Sud serves Sitges. Llafranc, Pals and Roses mean a bus or a car.

Is a cove calmer than the city for a first ride?

Look at the clock before the map. Mornings and evenings are calmer along this whole coast, and the afternoons are windier. If you want a cove, Nautiq sails out of Llafranc and picks Tamariu, Aiguablava, Cala Pedrosa or El Golfet on the day, by wind and sea.
