How long a wing foil course runs
Surfing Malta sells six hours. WingDing on the German island of Fehmarn sells twelve. On the RYA ladder in the UK you can be about 18 hours in before First Flights is complete, and the difference between those plans lies mostly in how long you spend on a big board with no foil under it.
The RYA Wing Scheme has four courses. Learn to Wingsurf and Improve your Wingsurfing take up to four hours each, on a large windsurf board or a SUP with no foil. First Flights and Sustained Flights are the two foiling courses, each eight to 10 hours, run as short sessions or full days. A three hour First Flights session is one piece of that course, not all of it.
Outside the RYA, published plans put between about three and nine hours of non-foiling teaching before the foil goes on, and often less where a school puts you on an eFoil or behind a boat first. Wingbox on Corsica says its students ride on their own after 6 to 20 hours, depending on experience.

The beach, a big board, then the foil
Almost all the plans follow one order. First the wing on land, then a board that floats you, and only then the foil.
On the beach
The RYA's ashore syllabus covers the parts of the wing, pumping it to the right pressure, choosing a size, wind direction, stance, and how to add and spill power, plus where to rig without getting in other people's way.
Wingfoil Surfschule Fehmarn spends 60 to 90 minutes ashore on wind, right of way, self rescue, wing handling and a dry trainer. Windsurf Station in Premantura takes about two hours, Jistra next door about one, and a one hour lesson at Surfing Malta is 40 minutes on land and 20 on the water. Where Fehmarn fits among the other spots on the German coast is on the Baltic Sea wing foil page.
Swiss Kitesurf publishes its beginner day almost minute by minute: a liability form, 20 to 45 minutes of theory, 20 on the spot and its rules, 30 on setting up and wing handling, then about an hour with the wing in the water on a SUP. The foil board comes last, if you have progressed far enough.
Kneeling, then standing, on a board that floats
The RYA puts this block on a windsurfer with a centerboard or on a SUP. You start on your knees and work up to your feet, sail across the wind, steer, and learn a basic gybe, first kneeling and then standing, along with flipping the wing in the water and paddling back prone as self rescue.
The RYA calls you ready to foil once your wing control is good and you can hold your ground upwind while wingsurfing. At Sail and Surf in Tihany the instructor makes that call with you.
The first foil session
First Flights opens with the hardware. You assemble and check the foil, launch with an eye on the water depth, and wing upwind with the board still in the water. Take off follows, with more power to coax the board up, less power to touch down in control, flight held for short distances, and basic steering with the feet. The course asks for helmets, impact vests and leashes, and it teaches you to fall on purpose, away from the foil.
At WingDing the fourth day is pumping, take off, flying and landing. Surfing Malta gives its third lesson two full hours on the foil board. Kitemonkey switches to radio coaching once you are on the foil.

The foil part, with a motor doing the pulling
Some schools take the wing out of your hands for the foil lessons and let a motor lift the board. Kitemonkey on Fehmarn does this when the wind is too light, on an eFoil with the same board. Sail and Surf in Tihany builds its whole wing course on three units: wingsurfing on land and on a SUP with a center fin, an eFoil lesson without the wing, then a private wingfoil lesson.
Sharky, also on Lake Balaton, teaches foil basics on an eFoil and then behind an electric boat. Windsurf Station in Premantura sells a private Take Off Course of three hours on a short mast foil board pulled by a boat, for €280 per person. On Lake Garda, LakeRiders in Malcesine puts a wakefoil day behind the boat before the first day with wing and foil board, and Swiss Foiling School pairs a towfoil course with a wing course in one Starter Day for CHF 499. Extrém Vízi Élmények, a Hungarian eFoil operator, says outright that foiling is learned fastest on an eFoil.
Two beginners per teacher, or six
Kite Passion in Germany and Wing-Wing in Corralejo teach at most two beginners per teacher, and at Wing-Wing the teacher wing foils in the water beside you. Wingfoil Surfschule Fehmarn caps a course at three and gives each student a set of their own; WingDing and Club Vass in Vasiliki stop at four beginners, DPC Tenerife at five, Surf School Vasiliki at six, with two per instructor later on.
Semi-private is the format with the least standard meaning. At DPC it means two students sharing one set for ten hours, so you take turns on the gear, for €399 against €699 for ten private hours. Kiteboarding Croatia in Nin states the opposite, that equipment is not shared between students.
Spread over the hours, beginner group courses come to roughly €50 to €90 per person per hour, private teaching at DPC and Surfing Malta to about €70 to €75. WingDing lists a private hour at €60 plus €60 for the wingfoil kit.
Wing foil course prices in Europe and the UK
A price means little without the hours behind it. €297 at Kitemonkey buys six teacher hours over two days, while €650 in Nin buys ten hours of Level 3 wing foiling. WingDing, Kitemonkey and Kite Passion include the kit and a wetsuit, and the Surfers Paradise prices include insurance.

The RYA route adds up differently because it is sold in pieces. At Plas Menai the Learn to Wingsurf and Improve half days (from £127.19 each) plus one First Flight day come to about £470, and that covers six of the eight to 10 First Flights hours. Calshot sells First Flights in three hour sessions at £160, for riders who can already wing upwind on a SUP, tack, gybe and get back to the beach. Plas Menai's water, the Menai Strait, is described on our Wales page.
A single wingfoil lesson, or the whole course
A one hour lesson at Surfing Malta never reaches the foil. It is 40 minutes on land and 20 on a non-foiling paddle board. The two hour lesson there covers land work, the SUP, upwind and turns, then setting up the foil, pumping and first flights, and the school recommends it to anyone who wants to feel the board fly.

Single hours work best once you have a course behind you and know which step you are stuck on. At Athens Watersports the hourly rate rises from €45 to €60 when the foil goes on, and an eight hour package costs €350.
Age, weight and the swim test
The minimum age is each school's own rule, and the spread runs from 8 to 16. Wingfoil Surfschule Fehmarn teaches from age 8, Pure Magic from 10 (12 for a Dublin group), Kitemonkey from 11, Plas Menai from 12, Calshot and Surfing Malta from 16, where under 18s need a parent's permission. The RYA sets no minimum age for Improve your Wingsurfing, First Flights or Sustained Flights and asks families of under 16s to contact the center. Jistra in Premantura teaches teenagers and adults.
Two of the schools also publish a weight floor. Kitemonkey asks for at least 40 kg, Surfing Malta for 35 kg and 150 cm.
Nearly every school asks whether you can swim, and Jistra takes swimmers only. Club Vass in Vasiliki writes at least 50 meters swum in clothes into its booking terms. Swiss Foiling School wants 15 minutes of free swimming, and Sail and Surf teaches everyone who swims well.
Lesson rules on Lake Balaton, in Croatia and on the Achensee
The Hungarian shipping regulations, Decree 57/2011. (XI. 22.) NFM of 22 November 2011, Part II, let someone who can swim, has enough practice and knows the rules and the local water steer a sport craft that needs no registration from age 14 (Article 1.02, paragraph 1). Club athletes under 14 may do so only under their coach's supervision, with life saving gear and an escort motorboat (1.02, paragraph 3). Article 4.07 asks for a life jacket on a water sport craft (paragraph 3), drops it while you learn a sailing craft right by the shore at a bathing place with a helper present (paragraph 3a), and keeps teaching near the shore and outside the fairway (paragraph 5); Article 9.12, paragraph 6 exempts organized teaching from the Balaton distance limits. That these articles apply to a wing foil is our reading. Sail and Surf hands everyone a life jacket and says it is a requirement on Lake Balaton.
Croatia's maritime navigation safety rulebook (Pravilnik o sigurnosti pomorske plovidbe), NN 52/2025 of 21 March 2025 as amended by NN 40/2026, sets no minimum age for users of personal craft, as we read it. The age limits you meet there are the schools' own.
On the Achensee in Tyrol a lesson record can be what gets you onto the water. The lake administration issues wingfoilers a permit only with proof of training, meaning any surf, sailing or boat license or a signed school record, plus insurance. In Germany, WingDing says its Grundschein, the basic license, lets you rent wing gear at other stations and opens waters that require one. More on local rules is in our rules overview. This summary is not legal advice.
Packing for lesson day
On an RYA course all the kit is provided; once you are hooked, the RYA names a wetsuit, a buoyancy aid or impact vest, and a helmet for foiling. Elsewhere the loan list varies:
- Kite Passion: wing, board, foil, wetsuit, impact vest and helmet; shoes and gloves carry a €5 hygiene fee per session.
- Athens Watersports: wing, board, life jacket, helmet and leash.
- Wing-Wing in Corralejo: helmet, impact vest, wetsuit and booties.
- Swiss Foiling School: board, foil and wing; wetsuit, shoes and vest are for rent.
Bring your own water shoes if you have them. Sail and Surf calls them very important on Lake Balaton because of the stones along the shore. Club Vass also wants holiday insurance that covers the sports.
Signs of a well run wing school
The RYA has more than 2,300 recognized training centers in 58 countries, only they may show its tick mark, and a center is inspected before it is recognized. Its Wingsurfing Instructor is a two day course for teaching the first two levels; a Wingfoiling Instructor has done four days and may also teach First Flights and Sustained Flights.
In Germany the counterpart is the VDWS. Its Wing Licence has seven levels, from the basic license on a longboard to the first 50 meters on the foil and on to jumping. Flisvos on Naxos teaches with VDWS instructors. In Ireland, Jamie Knox's instructors are recognized by the Irish Surf Association.
Then there is how the school reaches you once you are out on the water.
- Radio or helmet coaching: DPC Tenerife, Flisvos, Jistra, Kitemonkey on the foil, Windsurf Station with a wireless talking set, Jamie Knox with bluetooth helmets.
- A rescue boat: Flisvos, Jistra, Club Vass, Jamie Knox, Windsurf Station, or a jet ski at René Egli on Fuerteventura.
- Kit of your own: Wingfoil Surfschule Fehmarn and Kiteboarding Croatia do not make students share a set.
Where you learn is the other half of it. The RYA prefers flatter water and cross-shore wind, and with a foil it adds water depth and hidden hazards below the surface. You can wingsurf in as little as 5 knots and beginners stay below about 15 knots; foiling needs about 10 to 15 knots at first. Ask a school for its wind range and for its policy on days outside it; Surfing Malta sells its course as weather dependent. The jibe and the tack come after the first flights, and both are in our wingfoil guide.

A course abroad or wingfoil lessons near home
A holiday course packs the hours together. Club Vass runs its clinics from Monday to Friday, Flisvos on Naxos sells six beginner hours with an hour of rental on the same day, and Surfers Paradise on Rhodes teaches from April to October. The schools in Greece, Croatia, on the Canary Islands and in Cyprus suit a week of teaching, and further afield we have separate wing pages for Zanzibar and Cape Verde. A holiday week cannot be moved when the wind stays away, so read the weather terms first.
Near home the hours can be spread out, since the RYA lets centers run its foil courses as short sessions or full days. RYA centers teach across the UK and abroad, from Calshot and UKSA on the Solent to Plas Menai on the Menai Strait, and the UK and Ireland pages list more of the coast. Irish Sailing runs a Go Winging module at some of its centers.
The question for both is what happens after the last lesson. Windsurf Station rents a non-foiling board once you have done its Basic course. Wingfoil Surfschule Fehmarn rents wing gear only to its own students after two courses, Pure Magic rents wings to experienced riders only, from age 13. WingDing tells its graduates to practice alone and try several boards, wings and foils before they buy, and our wing foil gear guide covers that choice.
