What a first eFoil lesson includes

A first lesson usually starts on dry land. CHI eFoil in Chicago makes a 20 to 30 minute safety briefing mandatory. WakeUp Docklands on Royal Victoria Dock in London gives a dry land introduction before one to one tuition on the water, and Ultimate SUP NI uses its land session to set your body position.

Kit and contact vary far more than the briefing. FoilRide, eFoil Scotland, Ultimate SUP NI, CHI eFoil and eFoil Riders all hand out a helmet and a vest. Wetsuits are another matter, and EFoil London writes plainly that it does not provide them. Many schools talk to you through an intercom helmet or a Bluetooth headset. Others work from a boat or a board. FoilRide takes its students a few minutes by boat to the best conditions, Pure Magic in Dublin rides the Dún Laoghaire coastline with boat support, and Free-Foiler in Austria supports from a SUP or a boat.

The board is picked for you

For a first lesson the school sets you up on its own beginner kit. Sail and Surf in Tihany teaches on the school's Takuma board, the Balatonaliga listing names a SiFly Rider 110L, and Ultimate SUP NI tunes a SiFly to each student's profile. At a dealer the lesson can double as a test ride. EFoil London, a Lift dealer, sells a Half Day Try Before You Buy for £400. Our guide to the best eFoil for beginners compares the learner sets.

Booked time and time on the water

Kite2Fly at Podersdorf plans about two hours for its E-Foil Experience. One of them is riding. Preparation, the briefing and the boat ride out and back take the rest. A booking page that quotes only the total leaves you guessing how much of it you spend on the board.

A shared board shrinks your share again. Kite2Fly splits the hour between a second and a third person on one board, E-VASS in Greece prices per board with up to three people on it, and El Niño Surf Center in Mallorca puts up to four on one board taking turns. That suits a group trying it once and holds back anyone who came to learn.

From the first lesson to riding alone

Fliteboard says most people can learn in less than one hour. The schools put riding alone further off, and say so themselves. eFoil Riders finds most people confident after the first hour, and says it usually takes two or three sessions before you can ride alone on open water. Flying Fish in the Netherlands rents boards only after a certificate of three 40 minute lessons, and Infinity Sport at Lydd on Sea hires out for solo rides only with four hours of proven experience or after its three lesson package. The skills each stage asks for, from the stance to the first carve, are set out in how to learn to eFoil.

The second step often has a name of its own. EFoil London sells an Advanced Efoil Lesson at £150, FoilRide an eFoil Improver at £185 per person, and eFoil Hungary a four hour advanced course for 140,000 Ft. Learning to ride alone is a two or three booking expense.

Private lesson, paired or a group

Easyriders at Sandbanks prices it both ways. Two hours of private tuition cost £255. The two hour group session costs £155 per person, for two to four people with one board between two, so you spend roughly half of it watching your partner ride.

A group does not have to mean sharing. FoilRide gives each of its four students an eFoil of their own, Wake Up Events in Austria caps its two hour courses at two students, and eFoil Riders puts at most three riders on the water per slot. The eFoil Prague page covers the two schools on the Hostivař reservoir and their instructor only rule.

Bringing a friend usually costs less per head. CHI eFoil charges $400 for one person for an hour and $750 for two. eFoil Hungary asks 40,000 Ft for the intro lesson and 75,000 Ft for the paired one, eFoilution in Berlin €250 for one person or €200 each for two. A paired price can mean one board between you or one each, and that changes how much of the hour you ride.

List prices in pounds, dollars, euros and forints

Each price is quoted with the time it buys. Infinity Sport's £170 covers two hours at Lydd on Sea, and WakeUp's £195.79 covers 90 minutes in London. Our eFoil price page puts boards and running costs next to these lesson fees.

A booking checklist for eFoil lessons

The booking terms answer some of these points. An email before you pay answers the rest.

  • Insurance. EFoil London includes it in every lesson; eFoil Riders recommends you hold personal liability cover yourself.
  • Weather. Who calls the lesson off, for what, and whether you get a refund, a voucher or a new date.
  • Your own cancellation, and how many hours before the start it still costs nothing.
  • Age, weight and swimming. Published minimum ages run from 10 to 18, weight caps from 95 kg to about 120 kg.
  • Wetsuit, booties and an intercom helmet: included or not.
  • Minutes on the water, and how many people share the board.
  • Language of instruction, when you book abroad.
  • Payment. Sail and Surf takes 20 % in advance. eFoil Hungary asks for a bank transfer once the date is set, and the ÉlményPláza voucher for its lesson still needs a Marina-Port entry ticket.
  • Whether the lesson unlocks rental at that school.

Weather and cancellation

A first ride needs calm, flat water. Lift asks for water at least 4 ft (1.2 m) deep, so the foil cannot hit bottom, in a lake, bay or sheltered harbor. Kite2Fly at Podersdorf runs its eFoil sessions only in light wind or calm. Rain and cold count for less: eFoil Riders in Cologne rides in both.

A bad forecast plays out differently from school to school. eFoil Riders cancels or moves the lesson for a storm warning or for high or low water and refunds in full. WakeUp Docklands may postpone or cancel for adverse weather or unsafe conditions and then offers other sessions. eFoil Scotland moves the location and tells you. FoilRide on Anglesey says it can always guarantee flat water and so has no need to cancel when the weather changes.

Your own cancellation is a separate clause. At WakeUp, cancelling within 36 hours of the start, or not turning up, loses the whole session cost; earlier cancellations get a voucher for the same season and no money back. The general terms of eFoil Riders let you move training up to a week ahead. In Hungary a leisure service booked for a set date carries no 14 day withdrawal right (45/2014. (II. 26.) Korm. rendelet § 29 (1) l)), and storm warnings on Lake Balaton, Velence, Tisza and Fertő run under 46/2001. (XII. 27.) BM rendelet § 4 (1). What a warning does to your payment is up to the school's terms.

Who the schools will take on the water

Pure Magic in Dublin takes ten year olds. WakeUp Docklands wants you between 18 and 70. The other schools sit somewhere between those two, and fewer of them say anything about weight, some of them only loosely.

Swimming is the condition schools write down most often. FoilRide asks that you swim 25 m comfortably in open water, are happy to go under when you fall and have the fitness to climb back on. WakeUp asks that you can swim and move from lying prone to standing. Electric Surf Co in Austin takes swimmers only.

The legal texts behind the briefing and the age limit

UK: MGN 684 (M) para 1.4 counts eFoils as watercraft under the Merchant Shipping (Watercraft) Order 2023 (S.I. 2023/35), and para 2.5 names failing to provide an adequate safety briefing or training as an example of owner liability. A school that skips the briefing is the obvious case, as far as we can tell. MGN 599 para 9.1 keeps the STCW Regulations 2022 off pleasure vessels under 24 m, and with them any licence for the rider, as far as the text goes.

Florida: under Fla. Stat. s. 327.54(3)(e) (2026 Florida Statutes) a livery may not rent a vessel without pre-rental or pre-ride instruction, and s. 327.54(6) bars renting a powered livery vessel to anyone under 18.

Germany: on federal waterways the helm of a vessel under way needs a suitable person of at least 16 (BinSchStrO § 1.09 Nos. 1 and 2), and steering with 0.5 per mille or more in the blood is barred (§ 1.02 No. 7). eFoil Riders sets zero.

Hungary: 57/2011. (XI. 22.) NFM rendelet, part II art. 1.02 point 1, lets a person of 14, or 17 on a powered craft, drive a device that needs no registration if they can swim, have enough practice and know the rules. We read an eFoil as a powered device, so the age is 17. Art. 4.07 point 3 requires a life vest, and a firm renting without crew takes your written statement on swimming and rules (art. 1.03 point 4, annex II-10). Act XLII of 2000 (Vkt.) § 24 (1) makes liability insurance compulsory only for registered ships, ferries and commercial small craft. A private rider, then, has no such duty on paper, and the school's own cover is the one to ask about.

That is a lay reading of four legal texts and no substitute for legal advice. Our eFoil rules page sets the country rules side by side.

Where lessons are sold in English

In Britain, Ireland and the United States the question never comes up. Those schools are on the UK, Ireland and USA pages, with Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Dorset and Hayling Island in more detail.

Germany

eFoil Riders teaches in German and English at Cologne, Heidelberg and Würzburg, and sells the same €99 lesson in Frankfurt, Munich, Ingolstadt, Berlin and Mannheim. Cologne lessons run on a bathing lake, the Dürener Badesee. In Bavaria the palace administration bans eFoils on the 17 state lakes it manages. More on the Germany, Berlin and Munich pages.

Austria

Kite2Fly and Free-Foiler teach at Podersdorf on Lake Neusiedl, Free-Foiler also on Salzburg lakes, SUPXperience on the Stausee Grünanger in Graz, and Wake Up Events at changing places. Kite2Fly books in German only, so settle the language by email first. The Achensee booking page states that eFoils are not allowed there or anywhere in Tyrol. See the Austria page.

Hungary

Sail and Surf at Tihany has an English site and sells 60 minutes of coaching on the school's Takuma board with a Bluetooth headset. Its courses run weekly from 1 May to 15 September, other dates on request, and you need not stay at Club Tihany. eFoil Hungary at Balatonkenese and Tata, eSurf Hungary at Szántód and efoilberles.hu publish in Hungarian only, and no Hungarian operator states its teaching language. See the Lake Balaton page and the Hungary page.

Lesson or rental

A lot of rental desks settle this question for you. Duotone Pro Center Tenerife makes one supervised session obligatory on a first rental, Grassy Flats in the Florida Keys rents only to riders who have foiled before, and El Niño in Mallorca hires without an instructor only to experienced riders. Elsewhere the lesson works as a pass. Free-Foiler's Starter-Paket licenses later rental, an SUPXperience course code unlocks its boards, and eFoilution rents for €150 after a course. Flying Fish rents from €60 an hour after its certificate, and Infinity Sport accepts 4 hours of proven experience.

  • Never ridden: a lesson, because the desks above will not hand you a board without one.
  • One lesson behind you: a second lesson or an improver session, then rent where that school allows it.
  • Riding alone already: rent, or buy ride time such as eFoil Hungary's 5 session pass at 150,000 Ft or Seven Palms at €175 an hour.

The eFoil rental page goes through the hire terms and the rental hubs; for a wing instead of a motor, see wingfoil lessons.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an eFoil lesson?

Between £130 and £255 in Britain: £130 buys an E-Foil Cornwall one to one voucher, £195.79 gets you 90 minutes at WakeUp Docklands in London, and £255 two hours of private tuition with Easyriders at Sandbanks. In the United States, Hawaii eFoil Experience starts at $289 for 90 minutes and CHI eFoil in Chicago charges $400 for an hour. The eFoil Riders beginner lesson in Germany is €99, and eFoil Hungary asks 40,000 Ft for its intro lesson.

How long is a first eFoil lesson?

One to two hours at most schools, three at FoilRide on Anglesey. You ride for less of it: about 45 minutes in the Cologne beginner lesson, one hour out of roughly two at Kite2Fly on Lake Neusiedl.

How many eFoil lessons do I need?

One to get up and flying, two or three to be trusted alone. Fliteboard says most people learn in under an hour, and eFoil Riders reckons on two or three sessions before you ride alone on open water.

Where can I find an eFoil lesson near me?

Fliteboard lists over 140 Fliteschools worldwide. In England there are lesson sites on Royal Victoria Dock in London, at Datchet near Heathrow, on Hayling Island, at Sandbanks, on the Carrick Roads in Cornwall and at Lydd on Sea in Kent.

What should I bring to an eFoil lesson?

Swimwear and a towel. Ask about the wetsuit, because EFoil London does not provide one while FoilRide, eFoil Scotland and Ultimate SUP NI do.

Is an eFoil lesson a good gift?

Vouchers are how most schools sell one. The E-Foil Cornwall one to one voucher costs £130 and is valid for a year. ÉlményPláza vouchers for the eFoil Hungary lesson generally run 12 months and get a new date if the weather cancels.
