The nearest lesson is an hour out of Budapest
Neither the big river that runs through Budapest nor its big beach lake lets you ride an eFoil. No school works the Danube inside the city; the city beach in the Lágymányos bay, where eFoil Hungary used to teach, closed for good in June 2024. Lupa, just north of the city limits, rents electric surfboards, and its house rules keep motorized gear brought from home off the water.
So a session starts with a drive or a train. Lake Velence is under an hour from the center, the Öreg-tó in Tata about an hour, and Balatonkenese, the nearest base on Lake Balaton, about an hour and a quarter.
Four waters have a confirmed eFoil operator: Lake Balaton, Lake Velence, the Öreg-tó in Tata and the Austrian shore of Lake Fertő at Podersdorf am See. The Danube in Budapest, Lupa, the Hungarian shore of Lake Fertő and Lake Tisza have none.
Day trips from Budapest by drive and water
The drive decides which lake you can fit into a day, and the depth of the water has a say in how that day goes, because on a shallow, reedy lake the mast runs close to the bottom. efoilberles.hu, which rents Lift boards, asks for water deeper than 1.6 m without much weed or obstacles. Common eFoil masts are about 65 to 82 cm long, so on Lake Velence and on the Hungarian part of Lake Fertő well under a meter of water is left below the wing.

| Lake Fertő, Fertőrákos | About 2 h 30 min | Reed, about 1 m deep | None |
Without a car, Lake Velence is the simplest to reach. Trains from Budapest Déli stop at Velence, Velencefürdő, Gárdony, Agárd and Dinnyés in 30 to 50 minutes, and the same line carries on past Székesfehérvár to Siófok on Lake Balaton. Lupa is on the H5 suburban railway (HÉV). An electric shuttle bus runs from the Békásmegyer and Budakalász stops, or you walk about 20 minutes from Budakalász. Drivers take road 11 towards Szentendre, and cyclists arrive along EuroVelo 6.
Lake Balaton, where most schools teach
With about 600 km² of water, 78 km long and 7.7 km wide on average, Balaton is Central Europe's largest lake by area, and only 3.3 m deep on average. The shores differ. Along the north shore the water reaches 1.2 m after 40 to 50 m, while on the south shore you wade 150 to 200 m before it is that deep.
At the eastern end, eFoil Hungary teaches at Balatonkenese. It is the official distributor of Lift and Waydoo and sells boards as well as lessons. The intro lesson, 40,000 Ft, opens with 15 to 20 minutes of theory and practice on land and then gives you 60 minutes on the water. You arrange the date first and pay by bank transfer afterwards.

Tihany is the easy start in English. Sail and Surf, at the Club Tihany resort (Rév u. 3), runs courses on the peninsula from windsurfing to jetboard and has its prices on an English page. A private eFoil hour is €100, VAT included, plus €20 for each extra person; the Hungarian list says 40,000 Ft. You get safety tips and dryland training, then the water on the school's Takuma board, with the instructor in your ear over a Bluetooth headset for 60 minutes of coaching. The same lesson is step 2 of the school's wing foil course system.
Courses start weekly from 1 May to 15 September, and outside those dates by arrangement. You need not stay at the resort. Tell security at the barrier you are coming to the school and park free at the water sports building.
On the south shore the Zamárdi Vízisport Bázis rents an eFoil for 1.5 hours at 40,000 Ft. It comes as a plain rental, lesson not included. In neighboring Szántód, eSurf Hungary meets riders at the Mango Bar of the Balalake Resort and needs no experience from you: 1 to 1.5 hours with the full kit costs 40,000 Ft a person, and children under 12 get 50 minutes for 20,000 Ft.
In Balatonfüred the Flamingó hotel, which has its own beach, offers lessons with an instructor and rents boards to riders who already ride with confidence. It publishes no price. Surfstation, the Budaörs surf shop, lists lessons at Balatonaliga on a SiFly Rider 110L for 35,000 Ft an hour and at the beach in Vonyarcvashegy, at the western end, for 40,000 Ft.
Wind, water and season on Balaton
By day the wind blows onshore from the cooler lake, weak or moderate, gusting to 25 to 30 km/h at most, and it eases in the later afternoon. May and June bring the most of it.
A front is what to watch for. Warnings come half an hour to an hour and a half ahead, and a sharp cold front can turn a light breeze into 60 to 90 km/h within minutes. From 1 April to 31 October yellow lights around Balaton, Lake Velence, Lake Tisza and Lake Fertő give the storm warning. At 45 flashes a minute nobody may swim beyond 500 m from shore; at 90 a minute nobody may swim at all. The warning service describes the first level as gusts of about 40 to 60 km/h and the second as anything over 60 km/h. Our advice is to keep the board ashore at either level.
Water is warmest in July, often 23 to 25 °C, and frequently only about 20 °C in May and June. In an emergency call 112 or 1817, the water police, whose station in Siófok is staffed around the clock.
Lupa, Budapest's beach lake, without eFoils
Lupa-tó in Budakalász is a former gravel pit with more than 90 hectares of water, 1.5 to 10 m deep, over a bed of drop-offs, humps and underwater snags. Lupa Beach runs a cable wakeboard park, a sailing base, a SUP base and towed rides behind a motorboat. Its Superhuman eSurf base rents eSurf boards for 45,000 Ft an hour, and those plane on their hull without ever lifting onto a foil.
Point 4.6 of the house rules, in effect since 17 July 2024, allows only non-motorized water sports equipment to be brought in and used. As we read it, that shuts out a private eFoil. No Hungarian eFoil school lists Lupa among its venues.
Lake Velence, the warm lake next to Budapest
Lake Velence is about 10.8 km long, 1.5 m deep on average and 2.0 m at the deepest point, with reed over a third of its surface. In summer the water reaches 26 to 28 °C and runs on average more than 4 °C above the air, which makes it one of Europe's warmest lakes. Its level has been low in recent years.

In Gárdony, Surfstation lists eFoil rental at CrossWater, with 15 minutes of instruction compulsory for beginners and 1 hour for 35,000 Ft; call ahead to confirm. efoilberles.hu runs try-outs on the lake in suitable weather. Ask where the session launches and how deep it is there, because a 65 to 82 cm mast leaves little room on a lake that peaks at 2.0 m.
Stay clear of the western basin on the Pákozd side. Its 420 hectares are a highly protected bird reserve within a Ramsar site, and on the water its edge is only a notional line.
Tata's Öreg-tó, an hour west
Tata lies about 70 km from Budapest, and both eFoil Hungary and efoilberles.hu still list its Öreg-tó among their venues. The town tightened its rules in 2026. Decree 12/2026. (VI. 25.), in force since 26 June 2026, lets only the lake's businesses, managing bodies and kayak, rowing and sailing clubs run powered boats there, at most 15, motor and electric together, on yearly permits, and powered water craft need the nature conservation authority's permit.
With rules that new, call the school and confirm the session before you drive out.
Lake Fertő and the Austrian shore
Lake Fertő is the Hungarian name for the Neusiedlersee, about 320 km² of water with 180 km² of reed. Its southern end lies in Hungary, about 1 m deep and 84 % reed. The lake is protected in full, and on the Hungarian side the national park names three ways onto open water: the Fertőrákos bay with its North Harbour, opened in May 2025, the Virágosmajor harbour and channel, and the Sopron channel. There is no bathing beach on this shore and no eFoil school or rental.

Sessions happen in Austria. Kite2Fly at Podersdorf am See, a little over two hours from Budapest, charges €199 for one hour on the water, about two hours in all, and €249 or €299 when two or three people share the board. A boat takes you out from the Nord-Nord-Strand. Courses run daily in light wind or calm, need booking ahead, and move to a new date when the weather is wrong, so a session never lapses. Each extra half hour costs €100. The booking page is in German only. Our eFoil Austria guide covers Podersdorf and the Austrian lake rules.
Sudden strong wind is the lake's main danger. A strong north west wind pushes water to the Hungarian end, a south east wind pushes it north, and the gauge reading is not the depth where you stand.
Lake Tisza has water but no rental
Lake Tisza, about two hours east, is a reservoir of some 127 km² in five basins. The Abádszalók bay is for water sports, the Tiszavalk basin is a bird reserve, and more than half the lake belongs to the Hortobágy National Park. It averages 1.3 m deep, and tree stumps of former forests and orchards make boating dangerous. The Kisköre dam drops the level about 1.5 m for winter after a drawdown from 16 October to 15 November.

No one on this lake rents or teaches eFoil. The SUP Bázis in Poroszló offers e-surf, which is not a foil. Outside the original river bed, within 200 m of the shore and in the channels, speed is capped at 10 km/h except on designated sport courses (Shipping Code part II art. 7.73).
Hungarian rules in brief
Combustion engines are what the big lakes ban. Act XLII of 2000 on water transport (Vkt.), § 58 (1), bans small craft and boats driven by an internal combustion engine on the whole of Lake Balaton, Lake Velence and Lake Fertő, and on set parts of the Ráckeve (Soroksár) Danube arm and Lake Tisza. We read it as not reaching an electric eFoil, though no authority has ruled in writing. § 58 (2) keeps jet ski type craft to designated courses, none of them on those waters, and the Shipping Code (57/2011. (XI. 22.) NFM rendelet, part I art. 1.01 point 11) defines that craft by a combustion engine with a water jet pump, which in our reading an electric propeller eFoil is not.
The small craft license applies to powered sport craft over 14.7 kW (15/2001. (IV. 27.) KöViM rendelet, annex 4 I.1). Whether an eFoil must be registered is unsettled: Vkt. § 7 (2) exempts boats and non-powered sport craft but not powered ones, and § 8 (2) keeps those in the small craft register. Compulsory liability insurance (Vkt. § 24 (1)) does not name private eFoil riders.
Part II of the Shipping Code sets the everyday rules:
- From 17 you may ride an unregistered powered sport craft alone if you can swim, have enough practice and know the code and the water (art. 1.02).
- Life vest on, always (art. 4.07 point 3).
- Zero alcohol, no drugs and no riding visibly tired (art. 1.03 point 1).
- No sport craft in a bathing area or within 100 m of passenger and ferry piers (art. 4.13 point 1).
- Give way to SUPs and kayaks and keep 30 m from them and from swimmers; never cross a moving large vessel less than 1,000 m ahead (art. 3.03).
- No riding from sunset to sunrise or in visibility under 1,000 m (art. 3.03 point 12).
On a gravel pit or leisure lake without its own traffic order (art. 8.11), powered craft are banned except large vessels, their boats and powered boats of at most 4 kW; applying that to an eFoil is our reading. In protected areas, Act LIII of 1996 § 38 (1) asks for a conservation permit for “technical” sport, and nobody has ruled whether an eFoil counts.
This is a summary, not legal advice. The eFoil rules page compares licenses, minimum ages and insurance in other countries.
Renting and lessons around Budapest
On Lake Balaton an hour with an instructor costs about 35,000 to 40,000 Ft. Sail and Surf and Kite2Fly are the two here with euro prices.

The board nearest the city sits in a shop. Surfstation, at Vasút utca 11. in Budaörs on the south west edge of Budapest, rents a SiFly Rider Extra 110 L to take away for 100,000 Ft a day, 250,000 Ft for 3 days or 500,000 Ft a week. efoilberles.hu rents a Lift 4'9" Sport with about an hour of run time for a weekend, Friday 8:00 to Monday 10:00, at 150,000 Ft with a 500,000 Ft deposit, and wants water deeper than 1.6 m.
Once you can ride, eFoil Hungary sells 5 sessions for 150,000 Ft and 10 for 280,000 Ft, one session being a full battery of 65 to 90 minutes. Longer rentals from eFoil Hungary need a deposit and at least one experienced rider in the party. The eFoil rental guide explains how lessons, ride time and take-away hire differ.
Before you pay for a session
Sail and Surf publishes its courses in English, and Zamárdi and Surfstation have English sites. eFoil Hungary, eSurf Hungary and efoilberles.hu write in Hungarian only, and Kite2Fly books in German. Ask which language the instructor teaches in when you book.
Check the cancellation terms too. Under 45/2014. (II. 26.) Korm. rendelet § 29 (1) l), the 14 day withdrawal right does not cover leisure services booked for a set date, so in our reading a booked lesson is usually not refundable by law and the school's terms decide. eFoil Hungary's terms say that after the 14 day withdrawal period it neither buys back a coupon nor refunds money paid. A coupon is valid for 6 months from payment, and the terms have no weather clause.
At the counter a rental firm has to take your written statement that you can swim and know the rules, show you the board, and turn you away if you seem unfit (Shipping Code part II art. 1.03 point 4 and annex II-10).
