Seven resort islands sell time on a Lift board. The dollar prices, the two additions on every bill, the age Four Seasons sets and where a protected reef limits the ride

The islands with a board on the water sports list

The island you stay on decides if you fly here. Every eFoil in the Maldives belongs to a resort water sports center, and the center sells it to that resort's guests, so the question is which islands keep one on the list with a price or a booking form attached. Six do. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru sits in Baa Atoll and Six Senses Kanuhura in Lhaviyani Atoll. Hard Rock Hotel Maldives shares Emboodhoo Lagoon with SO/ Maldives, a short speedboat hop from Malé airport. Velaa Private Island and Veligandu publish full price lists, and the dive and watersports chain Best Dives runs eFoil lessons at Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa. SO/ makes a seventh, listing Lift electric foil sessions for beginners and experts in its watersports brochure.

Kanuhura, Veligandu, Hard Rock and SO/ name the brand, and each time it is Lift. Lift foiling was part of the Four Seasons launch too. Velaa and Best Dives keep the make to themselves. Lift reached the islands through Ocean Group, a company that runs water sports and PADI 5 Star dive centers at high-end resorts: Four Seasons launched its foiling program with Ocean Group, and the SO/ brochure carries its name.

From Baa Atoll to Emboodhoo Lagoon

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Baa Atoll

The session is called eFoil Extreme and runs 45 minutes for $290 per person, open to guests aged 16 and over. The Water Sports Centre supplies the equipment and an English-speaking guide comes along. Your part of the kit list is a swimsuit. The resort's own photo of the session shows the rider in a helmet and a life jacket.

Four Seasons describes itself as the first resort in the Maldives to offer hydrofoil experiences. Its program covers four of them: kite foiling, wake foiling, Lift foiling and the Naish wing-surfer. Baa Atoll around it is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Six Senses Kanuhura, Lhaviyani Atoll

The Ocean Watersports Center at Kanuhura sells a Lift eFoil session in two lengths. Beginners get 45 minutes for $290++, advanced riders 30 minutes for $210++. The two plus signs are the resort's shorthand for service charge and tax on top. Right next to it on the list, at the same two prices, is a TKO electric jet surfboard, the surface alternative to the foil.

Velaa Private Island

Velaa prints jet surf and eFoil on one line, so either board costs $200 for 30 minutes or $350 for an hour. It is the only resort here that sells a full hour. Prices are in US dollars with a 10% service charge and 17% government tax added, and the list reserves the right to cancel any activity for safety. Damage to the equipment is charged to you.

Veligandu

The Veli Water Sports Centre puts the Lift electric foil on its price sheet at $195 per person for a 45-minute beginner session and $145 for 30 minutes at expert level, the lowest figures of any resort list here. The resort pitches the board at everyone from first-timers to serious athletes.

Hard Rock and SO/ in Emboodhoo Lagoon

Hard Rock Hotel Maldives is about 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport, and its water sports center, Crossroads, sells an escorted Lift eFoil lesson. Beginners pay $205 for 45 minutes, experts $150 for 30. The list says prices can change without notice. Across Emboodhoo Lagoon, SO/ Maldives is a 15-minute speedboat ride from Malé airport. Its watersports brochure, put out by Ocean Group, offers Lift electric foil sessions of 45 minutes for beginners and 30 for experts. Ask the desk for the price.

Best Dives at Machchafushi

Best Dives Maldives runs a chain of PADI 5 Star dive centers and watersports centers across the country, and most of its watersports staff hold lifeguard and Emergency First Response training. At Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa it teaches eFoil and eSurf lessons, with instructors working on balance and throttle control. Prices come on request, through an enquiry form. Several other Best Dives centers carry both boards, so a guest at another resort it serves can ask there.

The price list and the two plus signs

A Maldives price list is in dollars and stops short of the full bill. Two additions follow, a 10% service charge and 17% tax. Four Seasons, Velaa, Veligandu and Crossroads spell that out on their lists; Six Senses writes it as two plus signs after the figure. Anyone comparing these numbers with a beach rental elsewhere should add the two before judging, because the bill at checkout is a good deal more than the list figure.

Most lists follow one pattern. A beginner gets 45 minutes, a rider who already flies gets 30, and the expert slot costs less. Velaa breaks it with plain 30 and 60-minute blocks and no split by level. Four Seasons lists a single 45-minute session and folds the guide into the price.

What a board costs to own is another matter entirely, and the eFoil price guide covers it. Rental outside resorts, by the hour or the day, is in the eFoil rental guide.

How a session in the lagoon runs

Bring your passport number to the center, because the paperwork comes before the board. The Tourism Ministry asks every water sports provider to give participants the safety information for each activity beforehand, and to keep a log of riders with their names, ages and passport or ID numbers. A consent and health form gets your signature at the same desk.

On the water a Lift board answers to a hand controller, and the motor stops as soon as the controller hits the water or the board tilts past 45 degrees, so a fall cuts the power by itself. Best Dives sums up what its instructors teach in two skills, balance and throttle control. Wherever a resort splits its sessions by level, beginners get the longer 45-minute slot and riders who already fly take 30 minutes.

A rider on an electric foil board over a turquoise shallow bay, islands and hills behind

Somebody from the center stays with you. Four Seasons sends an English-speaking guide with every session and Hard Rock sells its lesson as escorted. Crossroads asks everyone using its water sports to stay in sight of the staff, a rule for the whole center and not only for the eFoil. Velaa keeps the right to call off any activity when safety requires it.

Four Seasons shows its rider in a helmet and a life jacket, and the ministry's guidance asks for a life jacket on any non-swimmer, at all times. The Four Seasons packing list stops at a swimsuit.

Should the foil feel like too much, several resorts also rent the eSurf or electric jet surfboard, which stays on the surface while the eFoil rises above it on its hydrofoil. Best Dives calls the eFoil easy to learn and says no surfing experience is needed. Our beginner's guide to eFoil goes through the first session step by step, and the electric surfboard page explains the surface boards.

Riding near a protected reef

Marine areas in the Maldives are protected under the Protected Areas Regulation, number 2018/R-78, made under Article 4 of Act No. 4/93, the Environment Protection and Preservation Act, quoted here from its unofficial English translation. The regulation sorts protected areas into categories, and clause 6(a) sets what each allows. In Category 2 areas, taking, harming and removing natural resources is prohibited. In a Category 3 wilderness area, no activity that may harm the environment can be carried out. Category 6 covers managed habitat or species areas, where environmentally friendly economic activities are allowed.

The category alone settles nothing. Under clause 5 each area is declared in the Government Gazette together with the activities allowed and prohibited there, the Agency may zone an area under clause 6(b), and clause 7 has it keep a public list in the Gazette. Our reading is that a motorized board in a Category 3 area would struggle to pass the test, while in a Category 6 area the answer sits in that area's own Gazette entry. A resort near a declared area will have its water sports center tell you where the board may go, and that is the place to ask. Treat this as a summary of the published rules, not as legal advice.

Baa Atoll, home of the Four Seasons, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, named in 2011. UNESCO describes 75 islands, 13 of them inhabited, with tourism and fisheries as the main activities. Its lagoons run 30 to 80 m deep and the channels through the atoll 250 to 300 m, and the reef structures include faros, micro-atolls, patch reefs and knolls. For a single activity the government can set rules of its own. For whale shark tours, the environment minister announced propeller guards, speed limits in the area and one guide for every five tourists.

The Tourism Ministry's guidance for water sports

While its regulation on water sports incidents was still to be published in the Gazette, the Tourism Ministry urged providers to follow a set of safety standards. Participants get the safety information for each activity beforehand. Non-swimmers wear a life jacket at all times, and boundaries should be set where applicable. Activities stop when the MET office issues an adverse weather warning, when conditions are unsafe or when the instructor sees a danger. Providers keep a log of participants and a consent and health form, signed by a parent or guardian for anyone under 16.

The guidance leaves the boundaries to the provider, so where a board may go around the house reef is set by the center that runs your session, in the briefing and by the guide on the water. The general eFoil rules guide covers how other countries handle licenses and zones.

Choosing a slot, and what cancelling costs

A first-timer books the 45-minute beginner session, the one length Four Seasons lists. Anyone who has flown an eFoil before takes the 30-minute expert or advanced slot at Kanuhura, Veligandu or Hard Rock and pays less for it. Velaa leaves the level out and sells plain half hours and full hours.

Sixteen is the only published minimum age, and Four Seasons sets it. Families with younger children should ask the resort before promising anything, and remember the ministry's guidance on the consent form for anyone under 16. No resort publishes a weight limit for its eFoil, so riders near the upper end of what boards usually carry should raise it when booking.

Booking runs through the resort's water sports center, and at Best Dives through its enquiry form. Where the resorts part ways is the cancellation clock:

  • Four Seasons: four hours' notice, or 12 hours for a private session, or the full cost is charged.
  • Velaa: 50% if not cancelled six hours before the start, and 100% as a no-show charge when you cancel less than an hour before.
  • Crossroads at Hard Rock: free 24 hours or more ahead, 50% from 23 to 13 hours, 75% from 12 to 6 hours, and the full price under six hours or for a no-show.

Two monsoons and the sunniest months

The wet season is the southwest monsoon, and the Maldives Meteorological Service has it normally running from mid-May to November. The northeast monsoon, the dry season, runs from January to March, with December and April as the transition months in between.

Temperatures stay between 25°C and 32°C (about 77 to 90°F) on average. Most rain comes in short showers with sun in between, and January to March gets 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day, the other months 7 to 9. Rainfall climbs from north to south, from about 1,779 mm a year in the northern atolls to 1,966 mm in the central ones and 2,218 mm in the south.

A weather warning from the MET office stops all activities under the ministry's guidance. On a trip in the wet season, book the session early in your stay and leave room to move it.

Wing, tow rope or jetboard instead

The same centers will put you under a wing. Several teach wing foiling, which needs wind in place of a battery. Velaa lists a free competency check for wing foiling, then $100 an hour for hire and $200 for a one-hour lesson. Its list also has boat-towed wake surfing or foil surfing at $450 for 30 minutes. At Hard Rock, Crossroads sells a private wing-surfer lesson for beginners at $95 an hour and an expert hour at $80.

A wing foiler with a red and white wing riding over turquoise shallows

Kanuhura prices its wing-surfer for beginners and experts at $95++ and $145++, and a wake foil lesson at $125++ or $105++. Four Seasons counts kite foiling, wake foiling and the Naish wing-surfer among its hydrofoil experiences, next to Lift foiling.

The electric jetboard is the motorized option without a foil. Kanuhura offers the TKO jet surfboard at the eFoil prices, Crossroads an electric jet surfboard for $150 (30 minutes) or $205 (45 minutes), and Velaa puts jet surf and eFoil on one line. Best Dives pairs its eFoil lessons with the eSurf, the same idea under another name.

Foiling water taxis between the islands

The speedboat that brings you from the airport may soon be on foils as well. Navier and JIH Global Investment plan up to 100 Navier boats as water taxis in the Maldives, starting with five N30s, and the fleet will first serve the upscale hotels. The N30 is 30 feet long, takes 9 passengers and carries an 86 or 114 kWh battery, good for 70 nautical miles at 20 knots. The rest of the field, with specs and prices, is on the electric foiling boat page.

Candela, the Swedish yard, plans deliveries to the Maldives from 2026, alongside Mumbai, Thailand and Berlin. Its boats are on the Candela page.

Operators, prices and rules for Thailand, Bali and Dubai each have a page of their own. Every other destination is in eFoil spots by region.

Frequently asked questions

Which resorts in the Maldives put an eFoil on the water sports list?

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Six Senses Kanuhura, Velaa Private Island, Veligandu, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives and Machchafushi, where Best Dives teaches it. SO/ Maldives lists Lift electric foil sessions in its watersports brochure as well.

How much do the resorts charge, and is that the final bill?

$145 to $350 on the lists, and no, the bill is higher. The cheapest slot is an expert half hour at Veligandu for $145, a beginner 45 minutes runs $195 to $290, and an hour at Velaa is $350. The resorts add a 10% service charge and 17% tax to every one of those figures.

Do I need to bring anything to a resort eFoil session?

Your swimsuit is all you need to pack. At Four Seasons the board and the rest of the equipment come from the Water Sports Centre and an English-speaking guide goes with you; Hard Rock calls its lesson escorted.

How old do you have to be, and is there a weight limit?

Four Seasons takes riders from 16, and no other resort prints an eFoil age or a weight limit on its list, so ask the water sports center before you count on a session for a younger teenager or a heavy rider. Under the Tourism Ministry's safety guidance, a parent or guardian signs the consent form for anyone under 16.

Can I reserve a session before I land, and what does cancelling cost?

Yes, through the water sports center of the resort you are staying at; Best Dives takes bookings by enquiry. Cancelling is where the resorts differ. Four Seasons charges the full price without four hours' notice, Velaa charges half if you cancel less than six hours ahead, and Crossroads at Hard Rock charges nothing only when you cancel 24 hours or more before the start.
