eFoil on the Costa Brava

Lessons, boat trips and beach starts from the Bay of Roses to Blanes, which bay suits which rider, the Spanish beach rules, and the drive up from Barcelona or Girona airport

eFoil bases from the Bay of Roses down to Blanes

Two clusters and a gap. On the Bay of Roses, up near the French border, Roses has two operators, Sant Pere Pescador a beach school and Empuriabrava one more. Halfway down the coast a center near Pals rides the bay of L'Estartit, a boat leaves Llafranc for the coves, and a charter company takes boards out of Palamós and Calella de Palafrugell. Blanes, at the southern end, teaches from the beach. In between, Platja d'Aro, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar have no eFoil school on the sand. All of it is Girona province, 214 km of shore from Blanes to Portbou, and all of it goes by Costa Brava.

Aventura Nàutica, Boats Mediterrani, the Pals center, Nautiq and Costa Brava Rent a Boat take bookings on an English page; Jetski Blanes publishes in Spanish only. For Mallorca, the Costa Blanca and the rest of the country, start from the eFoil in Spain overview.

Pals for the price, Llafranc for the group, Blanes for the train

Pals sells one of the cheapest short sessions on the coast, €65 for 30 minutes with the Medes Islands in front of you, and its five hour pack at €425 is the one to take if you mean to put in the hours.

Campers at Sant Pere Pescador have a school on their own sand. The beach belongs to kiters and windsurfers, and one school there advertises 30 minute eFoil lessons, which suits a family where the others kite or wing off the same beach. Aim for the edges of the day when you book.

A group where not everyone flies fits the Nautiq boat out of Llafranc, up to ten people in a quiet cove for two hours at €500. Two beginners who want one board between them pay €180 either way, for the tandem in Blanes or for the Pals session for two.

Lloret, Tossa and Platja d'Aro mean a drive, south to Blanes or north to Llafranc and Pals. A boat of your own changes that, since a board can be delivered to the port.

Up from Barcelona for a weekend, Blanes is the nearest base, about an hour by car or a ride on the R1 train, with a tandem for a beginner pair and packs of 5 and 10 hours.

Roses launches from the port and from a boat

Aventura Nàutica meets you at the Port of Santa Margarida and teaches on Fliteboards; a beach start is not sold anywhere in Roses. The group half hour with an instructor costs €90 per person and needs a minimum number of riders. If the group does not fill, you get a new date, a voucher or another activity. A private half hour is €140. When your level and the sea allow it, the session heads toward the coves of Cap de Creus. The company schedules early in the morning or late in the day, “as foiling requires little wind and few waves”.

Boats Mediterrani sells a private course for one or two people sharing one board: €140 for 30 minutes, €195 for an hour. A boat takes you from its home port out into the Bay of Roses, and the instructor stays with you the whole time, backed by a support boat. Life jacket and helmet are part of the deal, and so is a photo report of the session.

Sant Pere Pescador and Empuriabrava, on the long beach

Sant Pere Pescador has the longest beach in the Bay of Roses, 6.3 km of sand and dunes with areas set aside for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park lies next to it, and campsites open straight onto the sand. From the Port of Santa Margarida in Roses it is 15 km to the village, about 15 minutes by car.

KiteExperience (K3), on the beach road, is the one school here that advertises eFoil lessons. It teaches on a Fliteboard, with at most two people and an instructor, and provides helmet, wetsuit and vest. According to the school, 30 minutes cost €70 and an hour €130. Lessons run preferably in the morning, when the sea is usually calm. KiteExperience also lists eFoil rental at €59 per 30 minutes, a figure that is the school's own, so find out what it requires before you count on renting a board.

The other schools and campsites along this beach do not offer eFoil. If someone in your group already windsurfs or kites, the wind schools here teach wingfoil.

In Empuriabrava, Empuria Sports lists Lift lessons from the beach or at your own boat. A phone call first saves a wasted morning.

L'Estartit and Pals, facing the Medes Islands

No eFoil operator is based in L'Estartit itself. The boards that fly across its bay come from a center at Pals, which trades as eFoil Experience Costa Brava and sells its sessions through Lassdive. The riding area runs along the bay of L'Estartit, Mas Pinell and Begur, right in front of the Medes Islands, on JetWave boards.

Thirty minutes cost €65 and an hour €95. Two people sharing one board pay €180 for their session, and a pack of five hours is €425. Life jacket, helmet, board and leash are included. No instructor is listed, so treat it as a session and ask what help you get on the water if you have never flown.

Platja Gran de Pals is more than 2,400 m long, takes the waves straight on and drops steeply into the water, with a paid car park close by. The operator picks the day.

Llafranc, Calella and Palamós by boat

Nautiq sails from the port of Llafranc to the coves. For €500 you get two hours for up to ten people, with two eFoil boards, the boat, a skipper, an instructor, fuel and the equipment. Wind and sea decide the cove on the day, Tamariu, Aiguablava, Cala Pedrosa or El Golfet, away from the crowds, the swimmers and the waves of the open beaches.

Two people ride while the rest swim or stay aboard. Bookings go through WhatsApp. If the weather turns, you get a new date free of charge or your money back in full.

A charter company also offers eFoil with an instructor from Marina Palamós and from Calella de Palafrugell, without a published price.

The gap between Palamós and Blanes

Platja d'Aro, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar share the one stretch of this coast where no school keeps a board. The nearest boards are in Blanes to the south and in Llafranc or Pals to the north. From Lloret or Tossa, Blanes is 10 to 25 minutes by car. From Platja d'Aro, Llafranc takes about 25 minutes and the beach at Pals about 40.

Boat owners have one more option. Water Toys Team brings day rentals to ports including Blanes, Port d'Aro and Marina de Palamós, once it has confirmed the delivery, with a Fliteboard at €450 to €600 a day or a Flitescooter at €500. The €600 model carries a €1,500 deposit. Book at least 12 hours ahead.

Blanes, the base closest to Barcelona

At the southern end of the Costa Brava, lessons start on the sand. Jetski Blanes runs a kiosk by the Passeig de s'Abanell. Its tandem lesson for two costs €180 for 60 minutes. Riders with some experience take the “Express” format, €85 for 30 minutes or €150 for an hour, and there are packs of 5 hours (€500) and 10 hours (€800).

An instructor and the safety gear come with every booking. Each rider shows a passport or national ID card and leaves a €20 deposit per eFoil, returned at the end. Booking requests go by WhatsApp, and you pay in cash, by card or by transfer.

Costa Brava Rent a Boat sells Blanes beach lessons on an English page: €95 for 30 minutes, €165 for an hour and €200 for a tandem hour.

Closer to the city, a school teaches from the beach at El Masnou on the Maresme, and Water Toys Team sells an intro session at Barcelona's Port Olímpic for €129; our eFoil Barcelona page has the details.

A private half hour by boat in Roses includes the boat and the photos; the Pals half hour lists no instructor. The eFoil price guide sets these rates against the cost of buying a board.

Tramontana days and marinada afternoons

The Bay of Roses is wind country. The tramontana, a north or northeast wind, blows strongest here in the Empordà, while Barcelona, the Maresme and the southern Costa Brava are largely sheltered from it. A summer thermal usually picks up between noon and 2 pm and can reach about 25 knots. A tramontana day is no day for a first lesson in the bay.

The marinada sea breeze sets in from mid-morning, most often in summer between about 9 am and 5 pm, and dies away in the evening. An east wind, the llevant, raises chop on the open beaches such as Pals and Blanes.

Aventura Nàutica rides at the start of the morning or toward evening, KiteExperience prefers mornings, and Nautiq picks its cove on the day. In summer the slots worth having are the first of the morning and the last of the afternoon.

The sea averages about 23 to 24 °C in August in the Bay of Roses and 25 to 26 °C off Blanes. Plan for late spring to October and ask before you book outside it. A 2 mm wetsuit or a lycra does in summer, a 4/3 in spring, according to KiteExperience; in Blanes the cold months call for a thermal top or a wetsuit.

One harbor master from the Tordera to Portbou

The whole coast from the Tordera river to the French border falls under one maritime authority, the Capitanía Marítima de Palamós (RD 638/2007, de 18 de mayo, annex), and the decrees it applies are the national ones.

Spanish law lists “tablas deslizantes con motor”, motorized boards, among beach craft (artefactos flotantes o de playa) in RD 1435/2010, de 5 de noviembre, art. 2 q) v), and art. 3.2 of that decree exempts them from registration. On that wording an eFoil counts as beach craft and carries no plate; that is our understanding of the text. Since 1 October 2026, RD 875/2014, de 10 de octubre, art. 10.1 c), as amended by RD 1188/2025, de 26 de diciembre (BOE of 30 December 2025, final provision two, point 2), asks for no title to handle beach craft within 2 nautical miles of the port, marina or beach of departure, in daylight only.

RD 1043/2003, de 1 de agosto, covers in art. 2 motorized craft other than jet skis that can exceed 10 knots. Its art. 5 asks for an engine stop when the rider falls, an approved life jacket of at least 100 N with a whistle, a buoyant helmet and goggles. We take an eFoil to fall under that decree; the school provides the gear.

Article 6 of RD 1043/2003 sets where you may ride:

  • never inside a buoyed bathing zone; in and out through the buoyed channels at 3 knots at most;
  • where no zone is buoyed, not inside the 200 m strip except to leave or reach the beach, at right angles to the shore and at 3 knots at most;
  • not inside ports and marinas, and not within 50 m of other craft;
  • by daylight, in good visibility and good weather only. The Capitán Marítimo can change zones or periods.

RD 876/2014, de 10 de octubre, art. 73, adds that a coast without buoys counts as a bathing zone 200 m wide on beaches and 50 m elsewhere. Out slowly through the channel, fly beyond it, keep clear of swimmers. Riding in a buoyed bathing zone, or faster than the limit in the 200 m strip, is a serious infringement (infracción grave) under RDL 2/2011, de 5 de septiembre, art. 307.2 l).

Sant Pere Pescador has buoyed its beach for 2026 with separate areas for wing, windsurf, kite and swimmers, so an eFoil goes out through the school's channel and rides outside the bathing zone. Ride the sea, not the river, and expect nesting areas in the dunes to be roped off in spring (Pla especial dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, 2010).

Around the Medes Islands, Ley 15/2010, de 28 de mayo, which set up the Parque Natural del Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter, lets the park's planning instruments regulate navigation, and the marine reserve bans anchoring. The law names no eFoil ban around the islands, so it is the operator, we understand, that chooses where its boards fly.

None of these texts asks a visitor with an instructor for a Spanish license. The eFoil rules guide does the same exercise for other countries. Everything above is the wording of the decrees as a rider reads them, and no substitute for legal advice.

Toll free up the AP-7, and a train to Blanes

Blanes is about an hour from Barcelona by car and the Bay of Roses just under two, and the AP-7 motorway up the coast has been toll free since 1 September 2021.

Without a car, the R1 train runs from Barcelona along the Maresme to Blanes, where a town bus covers the last stretch to the beach. The RG1 heads north to Figueres and Portbou. No train reaches the beaches of the Bay of Roses, Pals or Llafranc.

Booking, and the car park at Pals

Pals books online with a fixed or an open date; Aventura Nàutica and Boats Mediterrani also book online, Nautiq and Jetski Blanes by WhatsApp. Weather moves sessions on this coast, so book ahead and keep a spare day in the week. At Pals, arrive 30 minutes early and expect to pay at the nearest car park of Platja Gran de Pals. On the Sant Pere Pescador beach, non-guests cannot drive into La Ballena Alegre campsite in high season.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a beach start in Roses?

No. Aventura Nàutica starts at the Port of Santa Margarida, from €90 per person for a group half hour, and Boats Mediterrani takes one or two riders out into the bay by boat, €140 for 30 minutes or €195 for an hour.

Can I take an eFoil lesson in Empuriabrava?

Empuria Sports lists Lift lessons from the beach or at your own boat. Call ahead rather than turning up on the day.

Who runs the boards off L'Estartit?

A center near Pals, trading as eFoil Experience Costa Brava and booked through Lassdive. It rides the bay of L'Estartit in front of the Medes Islands, from €65 for 30 minutes. L'Estartit itself has no base.

Can a rider who already flies just hire a board on the Costa Brava?

Rarely. KiteExperience lists eFoil rental at €59 per 30 minutes on the Sant Pere Pescador beach, according to the school; ask what it requires before it hands one over. With a boat of your own, Water Toys Team delivers a Fliteboard to ports such as Blanes, Port d'Aro and Marina de Palamós from €450 a day.

How far is the nearest eFoil from Lloret de Mar?

Blanes, 10 to 25 minutes by car, with lessons from the beach.

Does an eFoil lesson in Spain call for any license?

No, in our reading of RD 875/2014 art. 10.1 c), in force in this form since 1 October 2026. Beach craft handled by day within 2 nautical miles of the port, marina or beach you left from need no title. The school brings the board, the vest and the helmet. The rules that do bind you apply on the water: out through the buoyed channel at 3 knots at most, and never inside a bathing zone.
