Only two winds count here
Morocco lies some 14 km across the Strait from Punta de Tarifa, the southernmost point of continental Europe, out on the Isla de las Palomas. What happens on the water here is decided by one of two winds. Levante comes from the east, Poniente from the west or southwest, and any other direction, says Alex Pastor Kite Club, is usually not much good.
Levante is strongest in the Strait and most frequent from May to October. It picks up a lot of speed at Tarifa, with Tangier so close across the water, and comes side-off at Los Lances, so the water near the beach goes flat, which the club calls really good for learning. It is gusty, though, and a rider who drops the wing drifts away from the sand.
Poniente blows side-onshore from the right, steadier and lighter, mostly 15 to 25 knots and usually in the afternoon. It brings waves as a rule, and Alex Pastor rates it as not the best wind for learning.
For Levante you want a school with a rescue boat behind you. For Poniente, the choice of beach does most of the work. If the sport is new to you, our wingfoil guide covers the gear and the stages of learning.

The best months for a first course, and when the crowds come
March to June and September to October bring air of 18 to 25 °C, wind at least four or five days a week by Alex Pastor's count, and quieter beaches than in summer, which makes them the time for a first course. July and August are crowded and expensive, with a thermal wind joining the Poniente at Valdevaqueros nearly every afternoon. Winter has fewer windy days and bigger waves and suits riders who already foil. ION CLUB's own pick is April to October.
The sea runs from around 16 °C in winter to about 22 °C in late summer, so a full wetsuit is normal for most of the year.

The beaches, from the town out to Bolonia
The N-340 runs west out of town past Los Lances to Valdevaqueros at kilometer 76 and Punta Paloma at kilometer 74, and the schools give their addresses by those markers.
Balneario and Playa Chica
Balneario, the first beach beside the island, some 200 m from the harbor, has a sand bottom, and a west wind tends to bring waves. Levante makes the whole beach work, but it blows offshore there, which makes first sessions hard, and the kites crowd in. Playa Chica by the island is for medium to strong Levante and experienced riders only, and closed to sports in summer.
Los Lances
Los Lances runs from the Río Jara to the Hotel Arte Vida and takes both winds, though in mid and low season a Poniente can make it too choppy for a beginner. Levante flattens it. Los Lances Norte, just outside town with a dirt car park, is a main Levante spot, windier toward Tarifa and lighter toward Valdevaqueros. Kitefun calls it its favorite spot for wing lessons, with one stretch ideal for beginners.
Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma
Valdevaqueros is the busiest watersports spot in Tarifa and works in both winds, from 7 or 8 knots to more than 40. Alex Pastor reckons the stretch with Punta Paloma holds the most wing foilers in mid and high season. Poniente gives the flattest water here, the dune shelters it in Levante, and ION CLUB notes that a Levante drift takes you safely toward the dune. Parking at Punta Paloma is often paid in summer.
Bolonia and the escapes
Bolonia is best in side-shore Levante, and the classic Levante downwinder from Balneario or Los Lances ends there, a run for very experienced riders only. Its dune, more than 30 m high, was built by Levante blowing sand along the beach.

When Levante tops 40 knots in Tarifa, Palmones on the bay of Algeciras can have 18 to 20 knots with few waves, and the schools move beginner classes there. Caños de Meca takes strong Levante too, with more waves and a rocky bottom, for intermediate and expert riders; El Palmar beside it is the surf beach for a windless day.

Where to ride on a Levante day and on a Poniente day
A Levante morning puts a beginner at Los Lances Norte with a school, for the flat water, the rescue boat and a rescue card against the offshore drift, or at Palmones when Levante blows very hard. Experienced riders choose among Playa Chica outside summer, Balneario and the football ground area, and the very experienced take the Bolonia downwinder.
Poniente runs on afternoon time. The wind comes in after lunch, lessons begin around 14:00, and the breeze often holds until 19:00 or 20:00. Valdevaqueros and Punta Paloma are flattest, Los Lances choppy for beginners. With lessons booked, keep both halves of the day free.
Starting from zero, two hours a day
Kitefun asks for no experience in any sport. Alex Pastor teaches the wing on land first, then the wing on a board without a foil, then the foil. At 3Sixty, day three of the three-day course is pumping and riding on the foil, which the school calls the most difficult part for a beginner.
Alex Pastor's usual package is about six hours, two a day, and the school says most students need 8 to 10 hours of private or semi-private lessons to ride on their own. Groups of three or four share two wings, so there it suggests at least eight hours. Some beginners need a week or more.
Teaching yourself here is a poor plan, in our view. Levante is gusty and offshore, Poniente choppy, and summer beaches fill with kites and swimmers. Courses also depend on the wind, and ION CLUB states that beginner courses cannot be guaranteed. Our wing foil lessons page explains how schools in general put a course together.
What each of the six schools brings to the beach
All six teach in English. Kitefun teaches wing privately only, with radio helmets, high-volume boards, large foils and Ocean Rodeo wings, and its certified team also speaks Dutch, French and German. Alex Pastor Kite Club teaches mostly at Los Lances Norte, where its rescue boat is based, and moves to Palmones in strong Levante; lessons on its Airush and AK gear include wetsuit, vest, helmet, radio helmet and insurance.
Surf Center Tarifa teaches every day of the year on Playa Los Lances Norte in front of the Hotel Arte Vida, in an area the town hall has authorized, on Duotone and Fanatic gear with its own rescue jetski. Its lessons are private or two per group, up to four on request.
3Sixty Kite School Tarifa runs an IWO Wingfoiling Center at kilometer 81 of the N-340, open all year, with courses of one to four days that include gear, accident and liability insurance and an IWO certificate. ION CLUB sits on the beach at Valdevaqueros with a rescue boat. Laduna Tarifa, at the Punta Paloma end of that beach, gives private lessons from the age of 8.
Riders who already fly stably on both tacks can join coached camps at Punta Paloma and Valdevaqueros, with two to four hours on the water a day and video analysis.
A €25 group hour, a €80 rental day
The cheapest hour is a 3Sixty group hour at €25, four students on two sets. Private hours start at €60 there and €70 at Alex Pastor.

Kite zones, bathing strips and the Tarifa beach ordinance
Tarifa's beaches run under the Ordenanza municipal de uso y disfrute de las playas del término municipal de Tarifa (BOP Cádiz núm. 157 of 16 August 2018, in force since 15 September 2018). It has articles for kitesurf, windsurf, surf and SUP and does not name wing foiling, but its bathing zone and insurance articles apply to everyone.
The bathing season runs from 15 June to 15 September (article 6 b). No floating device moved by motor or sail may enter a buoyed bathing zone (article 21.2), and without buoys the zone is 200 m wide on beaches and 50 m elsewhere (article 21.4). The national Reglamento General de Costas (Real Decreto 876/2014, article 73.1 and 73.2) sets matching widths, with a 3-knot limit inside them and signposted channels for launching and landing. A wing moves by sail, so it stays out of the bathing zones and goes in and out through the channels.
Kite learning zones are reserved for kite schools with a municipal license (article 26.1). Article 29 keeps the buoyed kite channels, about 100 m wide, for going in and out, prohibits riding at night and recommends staying within one nautical mile, 50 m from swimmers and off the water two hours before sunset. Those are kite rules, and a wing rider has nothing closer to go by. Article 31.2 and 31.3 require third-party liability insurance for free practice, so anyone riding without a school needs cover that includes water sports abroad.
A nautical license is not needed, as far as we read the decree. Real Decreto 1188/2025 of 26 December 2025 (BOE núm. 314, 30 December 2025) adds article 10.1 c) to Real Decreto 875/2014, in force from 1 October 2026: floating and beach devices need no nautical license by day within 2 nautical miles of the beach they set out from.
A Junta de Andalucía leaflet adds that the beach lagoons are closed to teaching and riding except at Valdevaqueros, that cars stay off the beach and gear off the dunes. The schools describe kiting as banned from 15 June to 15 September at Balneario, La Jaima and Río Jara, and they insist on a rescue card for Levante days at Los Lances Norte because the wind blows offshore.

Planning a first week in Tarifa from home
Seven days give a three-day course room for a windless day, and this is how we would split them.
- Days one to three: two hours of lessons a day, in the morning on Levante and in the afternoon on Poniente.
- A windless day: the Bolonia dune and Baelo Claudia, or a surf at El Palmar.
- The rest of the week: more lessons, or a full set rented at €80 a day from Alex Pastor or by the hour at Spin Out.
From home, book the course, a car, a bed near the beach, and liability and travel insurance. The board can stay behind. Schools include full gear, and a beginner board is very big, so renting saves excess baggage fees; a wetsuit is the most you need to pack.
A UK GHIC, free from the NHS website, and the EHIC for Irish and other EU residents cover necessary state healthcare on the same terms as locals. Neither replaces travel insurance or pays for repatriation.
Málaga for most riders, Gibraltar for the shortest drive
Málaga has direct flights from across the UK and Ireland plus a seasonal Newark service, and a hire car from there is how most riders arrive. Gibraltar is the closest airport, with flights to the UK only. Seville (London, Manchester, Dublin, Cork) and Jerez (seasonal UK flights) are the alternatives, and from the United States most routes connect through a European hub. Transportes Comes runs buses from Seville and Málaga, but between spots you need a car.

From the western Costa del Sol, Tarifa is a day trip; from Málaga city, make it an overnight.
Wing lessons and eFoils closer to Marbella
Marbella has wing lessons of its own. NaluSur teaches from the Puerto Deportivo on Duotone gear, €195 for a private two-hour course or €110 per person in a group of three, from age 12. HoeNalu on the Bahía de Marbella runs a four-hour WingSUP initiation without a foil for €180, with no courses in July or August.
No school in Tarifa runs eFoil courses. Alex Pastor Kite Club rents an Audi e-tron eFoil at €70 for 30 minutes, and Surf Center Tarifa sells foil assist on a Duotone Assisted Foil, €150 for a private hour. The nearest eFoil courses are at Blua Blue on the lake of La Reserva in Sotogrande, about 49 km away. Our Costa del Sol eFoil guide and the eFoil in Spain overview cover the rest, and the Morocco wing foil guide the coast across the Strait.
