eFoil Paris

Why the river stays closed in town, the trial zone by the Bois de Boulogne, and the nearest coast where a board is for hire

Last updated:

eFoil on the Seine, in town and below it

Inside the city the river is closed to you. Between the bridge where the périphérique crosses the river upstream and the one where it crosses again downstream, the river police rules keep small motor craft and nautical sports off the Seine, and an eFoil counts as both.

Paris did have eFoils on the water in 2026, a few kilometers downstream. Foil in Paris, the only eFoil school in the whole of Île-de-France, rode from a base in the 16th arrondissement inside a trial zone that an inter-prefectoral order opened for that year. After a decision of VNF, the national waterways authority, and the préfecture, it took adults only. The trial window closed on 31 October 2026.

Everywhere else in the region the motor board is banned, and the lakes of the leisure islands around Paris have no eFoil for hire. The nearest coast, the Channel, has four bases. Le Touquet and Deauville are each roughly two hours from Paris on the fastest trains, with Wissant and Bray-Dunes farther north toward Belgium.

Why central Paris is closed to small craft

The text that decides it is the règlement particulier de police (RPP) for the Seine-Yonne route, an inter-prefectoral order of 2019 on river police, modified by order n° 75-2025-10-13-00001 of 13 October 2025. Its article 1 defines a “Paris” stretch running from the upstream to the downstream périphérique bridge, PK 165.200 to PK 177.950, close to 13 km of river.

Article 9.1 bars three groups from that stretch: boats of 4.5 kW or less (service boats excepted), boats driven by human power, and nautical sports. Annex 2, part II, repeats the sports ban. A battery board falls into the first group as a small motor craft and into the third as a sport, so by our reckoning it is shut out twice. Kayaks and rowing boats are kept off by the same article.

The city's Seine bathing sites, at the Bras de Grenelle, the Bras Marie and Bercy, all lie inside the closed stretch. Flyboards fall under a different rule: the RPP bans hydro-propelled lift craft on the whole route.

No national statute settles the question. On inland water the Code des transports (art. R4241-60, in force since 1 September 2014) leaves nautical sports to the police rules of each river, and for the Seine in Île-de-France those rules are the Seine-Yonne RPP. The sea rules, with their 300 m band and 5 knot limit, do not apply on the Seine.

Banned in the rest of Île-de-France, private boards included

Beyond the city limits the position is no better. Article 1 of the order of 3 July 2026 inserted a new line into the RPP: the motor board is banned in Île-de-France, save as a trial in zones set for it, on terms fixed by prefectoral order. That article, so far as we can see, carries no end date of its own. Read with the RPP's own article 1, it covers the Seine, the Yonne, the lower Marne and the first 1.23 km of the Oise.

The RPP also sets out fast-navigation and water-ski zones, at Charenton or Bezons for instance. Under the 2026 ban, on our reading, they are no eFoil spots.

Owning a board changes nothing either. The 2026 zone was open only to accompanied club members and rental clients, so in our reading a privately owned board cannot be ridden on its own on the Seine in Île-de-France. Our guide to eFoil rules covers licensing and insurance in other countries. eFoil Paris IDF is a different business, a Fliteboard reseller in Villennes-sur-Seine that sells boards, offers no rental and lists no session price.

The leisure islands are a separate case. Port aux Cerises, Jablines-Annet, Vaires-sur-Marne, Cergy and Moisson sit on lakes that seem to us to lie outside the RPP, and none of them offers an eFoil. Their programs stop at wing foiling and the usual water sports.

The 2026 order: what it allowed, and what comes next

The inter-prefectoral order of 3 July 2026, issued by the Île-de-France préfets, regulated the motor board in the region for 2026. It defines the craft by reference to Division 240, art. 240-1.02, the French rules for pleasure craft, as a motor board “with or without foil”, and it set up a trial. Article 2 fixed the terms of that trial:

  • one zone, from the A13 motorway bridge to Suresnes;
  • hull under 2.50 m, motor of 4.5 kW or less, speed under 25 km/h (about 15 mph);
  • riders only from clubs affiliated to a French water sports federation, or clients of rental businesses;
  • every rider accompanied by someone able to help at once, at most three riders per companion, on a boat carrying a tow rope;
  • outside the navigation channel only, more than 5 m from bridge piers, buildings and moored craft and more than 15 m from moving vessels;
  • a buoyancy aid of at least 50 N, a helmet, a neoprene wetsuit and a kill switch;
  • an adult rider who attests being able to swim 25 m.

The 2026 order allowed it until 31 October 2026, and another season needs a new order. We read the article 1 ban as staying in force, since only article 2 carried the closing date. Article 3 asks DRAJES, the regional youth and sport office, and VNF to review the trial within two months of its end, which by our count means the end of December 2026.

Two more duties apply to every nautical sport on the route, under articles 38 and 39 of the RPP. Riders must not hinder commercial navigation, and they have to check the notices to boatmen before setting out. VNF publishes those notices through its NAVI service.

This is a plain summary of the texts, with our readings marked. It is not legal advice.

The trial zone between the A13 bridge and Suresnes

The zone ran from the A13 motorway bridge (PK 14.200) to just below the Suresnes bridge (PK 16.440 on the right bank, PK 16.000 on the left). That is a little over 2 km of river, starting about five and a half kilometers below the downstream périphérique bridge by our reading of the kilometer points. Boulogne-Billancourt and the Bois de Boulogne line the right bank, Saint-Cloud and Suresnes the left.

The base sits under the Passerelle de l'Avre, the footbridge at PK 14.782, and we understand riders to set off from the school's own pontoon. Sortir à Paris, which tested a session, counted roughly 3.5 km of riding in back-and-forth passes between the Saint-Cloud viaduct and the Suresnes bridge, behind the Bois de Boulogne, where boats are few. That figure adds up the passes, so it measures distance on the water and says nothing about the size of the zone.

From the Issy bridge (PK 9.000) to the Suresnes locks (PK 17.000), boats on this reach pass starboard to starboard. The 2026 order had riders keep to the right outside the channel, use passes 2 and 5 of the Passerelle de l'Avre and cross the channel only to turn, under a supervision boat with a VHF radio. Downstream the locks and the dam close the zone, and the RPP bans nautical sports within 150 m above and below a dam outside the channel.

Foil in Paris adds a safety system of its own, separate from VNF: TrackShip, a vessel-detection API fed with VNF waterway data, sends light and sound alerts to instructors and riders on the water, and the staff carry walkie-talkies.

A session at Foil in Paris, in the 16th

The address is 1 Allée du Bord-de-l'Eau, 75016 Paris, a short walk from the Longchamp racecourse on the Bois de Boulogne side of the river. Besides the boards, the base has a pool and electric all-terrain skateboards, and Les Maquereaux, a neighboring restaurant, shares the site.

A session lasts 1h30. You are welcomed, fitted with a vest and helmet, given a safety briefing and shown the remote and the take-off, then you make your first tries before a coached ride on the Seine. An instructor stays on the water the whole time, and never more than three beginners ride at once. If you own no wetsuit, the school lends one. The boards are Lift eFoils.

The list price is €150 for 1 hour on the water, or €360 for three one-hour sessions booked in one person's name. Bring a towel, sun cream and a water bottle. Sortir à Paris adds a strap for sunglasses to that list.

What the school asks, and what the law asked

The school wants riders who can swim 25 m unaided and are in good physical condition, and it advises against riding, or refuses you, with a heart or breathing condition, reduced mobility, pregnancy, alcohol or drugs. Everyone wears a helmet and a vest, signs a registration form and a waiver, keeps 10 m from other riders, obstacles and boats, and stays out of the channel.

The order set its own distances, 5 m from bridge piers, buildings and moored craft and 15 m from moving vessels, and it added a neoprene wetsuit and a kill switch to the kit. The 25 m swim, the helmet and the buoyancy vest appear in both.

When it comes to money, the school's terms of sale are the only rule. Under them you pay in full when you book, and a cancellation on your side is not refunded unless you can document force majeure. Rain, cool weather or cloud are no reason to cancel or move a session. The school may ask for a deposit or a card pre-authorization of up to €5,000 per rider or per item, and riders need liability cover for the hired gear. The eFoil rental guide explains how deposits and cover work at other schools.

Booking an eFoil session in Paris in English

Foil in Paris books in English: its website has English access, safety and booking pages, and the confirmation comes in English. Session descriptions and the terms of sale stay in French.

Paris's official tourism office lists the school on its English pages, with “The price to try the eFoil is €150” and “Allow around 2 hours for the eFoil experience”. Sortir à Paris tested a session for its English edition and found one hour on the water, with only three people out at once and adults only under the Paris rules. Euronews ran an AFP story headlined “Parisians are now flying above the Seine on electric surfboards”.

Getting to the base by bus, tram or métro

Every route ends on foot, from a bus stop right in front of the barge to a 12 minute walk from the métro. The school gives these walking times:

  • bus 241 to Hippodrome de Longchamp, which stops in front of the barge;
  • bus 244 to Les Moulins Camping, then 3 minutes on foot;
  • bus 175 to Étang de l'Abbaye or Pont de Suresnes, then 6 to 10 minutes on foot;
  • métro line 10 to Boulogne Pont de Saint-Cloud, then 12 minutes on foot via Rue de Sèvres;
  • tram T2 to Les Milons, then 5 minutes on foot across the Passerelle de l'Avre.

From central Paris, take métro 1 or RER A to La Défense and change to T2 heading south (the line runs from Pont de Bezons to Porte de Versailles) for Les Milons and the footbridge. Métro 10 and the walk is the other way in.

Drivers can use a free private car park at the base, signposted Restaurant Les Maquereaux, Foil in Paris and Green River Cruise. Half a day covers the trip. The session itself runs 1h30, and the tourism office suggests allowing around 2 hours.

eFoil near Paris: four bases on the Channel coast

eFoil Le Touquet belongs to the same Lift network as the Paris base and rides the Canche, a tidal estuary: €120 for 50 minutes on the board plus 10 minutes of coaching, or packs at €300 for three hours and €500 for five, booked on a website in English. Trains stop at Étaples/Le Touquet, a little over two hours from Paris Gare du Nord on the fastest direct TGVs, with a shuttle from the station; by car it is the A16, exits 25 and 26.

Wimkite teaches at Wissant and Wimereux on the Opal Coast. It takes riders from age 12 and 35 kg, offers eFoil all year and charges €110 for a one-hour initiation. Rental at €60 an hour exists only inside its lessons, under an instructor's eye in a set zone.

Kites and windsurf sails off the beach at Wissant on the Opal Coast on a windy day

ALOHA works from Bray-Dunes, by the Belgian border, and sells its board by the battery: €120 for a full charge, which gives more than 100 minutes of riding. Its beach spot is used only in winds under 5 knots; above that the session moves to the lake at Nieuport in Belgium, half an hour away. The Belgium page covers the riding over the border.

Deauville has eFoil sessions sold through activity booking sites, with the meeting point at Quai des Marchands, 14800 Deauville, on the quays of the Touques as we read the address. A 60 minute initiation costs €150, from age 12 and up to 95 kg. The fastest direct trains from Paris Saint-Lazare reach Trouville-Deauville in about two and a quarter hours. With some two hours of train each way plus an hour on the water, Deauville and Le Touquet make day trips, while the Paris base fits into half a day.

On the coast the sea rules take over. Order 41/2018 of the préfet maritime for the Channel and the North Sea, dated 29 May 2018, sets 5 knots inside the 300 m band, measured from the waterline of the moment, so the band moves with the tide; its article 3.6 allows motor boards by day only and within 2 nautical miles of a shelter, which we take to cover the eFoil.

Water temperature, wind and floods on the Seine

At Suresnes, inside the trial zone, the national water temperature network recorded monthly means of around 6 °C in January and over 20 °C in July and August between 2010 and 2012. The Paris bathing sites upstream averaged about 23 °C in summer 2025. Wind hardly matters on this reach: Météo-France gives a yearly mean of 3 m/s at Paris-Montsouris for 1991 to 2020.

Rain matters more. Water quality moves with it, the bathing sites close after heavy rain, and under the EU method the three Paris sites were rated insufficient for 2025 over the year, although tests on their opening days showed sufficient quality. Foil in Paris lists pollution among its reasons to cancel. Away from the bathing sites, the authorities warn of a strong current, a muddy bottom with clinging plants, dense traffic and a risk of cold shock.

High water can stop riding altogether. Upstream of the Suresnes locks the RPP treats the Seine as in flood once the gauge at the Austerlitz bridge reads 1.60 m, and the school's terms name decisions of the authorities and navigation bans among the reasons a session can be moved.

Frequently asked questions

Can you eFoil on the Seine in Paris?

Not inside the city, where the river police rules ban small motor craft and nautical sports. In 2026 riders went out a few kilometers downstream, beside the Bois de Boulogne, under a trial order whose window closed on 31 October.

Which school teaches eFoil in Paris?

One, Foil in Paris, in the 16th arrondissement. Its list price is €150 for an hour on the water, and its trial zone on the Seine was open until 31 October 2026.

How old do you have to be to eFoil in Paris?

Eighteen. The 2026 order required an adult rider, and the school stopped taking under-18s after a decision of VNF and the préfecture.

Can I ride my own eFoil on the Seine?

No, as we read the order. It opened the trial stretch only to club members and rental clients, each with a companion on a boat, and it bans the motor board everywhere else in Île-de-France.

Does the Paris eFoil school work in English?

Yes. The website, the access and safety pages and the booking of Foil in Paris all run in English, and so does the confirmation. Session descriptions and the terms of sale are in French.

Where can I eFoil near Paris in winter?

On the Opal Coast. Of the bases near Paris, only Wimkite, at Wissant and Wimereux, says it offers eFoil all year. Paris depends on a new order.

Is the Seine clean enough to fall into?

Not after heavy rain, when the bathing sites close and the school counts pollution among its reasons to cancel.
