Three schools, none of them in Brussels
You can learn to eFoil at three Belgian schools, all in Flanders. Surfers Paradise teaches on the beach at Knokke-Heist. Efoil Mechelen rides a former sand pit at Hombeek, on the edge of Mechelen, and EFOIL Vlaanderen a recreation pond at Waasmunster, near Lokeren. All three teach on their own boards. Two smaller offers sit beside them. Aan de Plas in Bruges puts the eFoil at the start of its wing foil course, and Boatnomads holds lessons on a canal at Viersel, outside Antwerp.
None of the three is in Brussels, in the cities of Antwerp or Ghent, or in Wallonia. From the capital, Hombeek is the short hop. Mechelen lies between Brussels and Antwerp, about 25 km from each as the crow flies. The coast runs for under 70 km, and its one eFoil school is at Knokke-Heist.

Hombeek, between Brussels and Antwerp
The Eglegemvijver covers more than 43 hectares, a former sand pit dug for the E19 motorway that locals call “de put van Hombeek”. It is managed for nature and quiet recreation, and swimming is not allowed. The entrance on the Eglegemweg is about 400 m on foot from Hombeek station, with parking along the road, and cyclists find it at node 10. A walk round the lake is 3 km.
Efoil Mechelen is the eFoil school of the sailing club WVD Mechelen, at Eglegemweg 8. A private lesson runs 1.5 hours, about one of them on the water, with wetsuit, life jacket, helmet, briefing and a day's insurance included. It costs €150 for one person and €275 for two. Members pay €125 and €235. A pack of three lessons costs €425 for one rider or €825 for two. You need to be 16 and able to swim 100 m unaided, and the school alone decides when the weather cancels a slot.

The school works in five stages: lying on the board to learn the remote, kneeling for the first turns, standing on a flat board, turning while standing, and only then the lift onto the foil. Beginners train on the Fliteboard AIR (150 L); the fleet then steps down through the High Performance (99 L) and PRO (67 L) to the ULTRA (54 L). Helmet and high visibility life jacket are compulsory in lessons and rental. Bring non-slip water shoes if you own a pair.

Motorized water sports are not allowed on the lake, and only members of one of its clubs may use the water. WVD adds that its own motorboats and eFoils are the only motor traffic. As we read it, you ride the club's boards here, in a lesson or as a renting member, and a board you own stays at home. Rental is for members only (an adult of 25 or over pays €25 to join, a refundable €90 deposit and €185 a year), so a visitor books a lesson. Foilingschool Mechelen, teaching wing, tow and pump foil at the same club, swaps a windless wing lesson for an eFoil one if you pay the difference.
Waasmunster, where children can start
EFOIL Vlaanderen rides Waterplas De Mare, a recreation pond on the edge of Lokeren, from Hamstraat 1 in Waasmunster, at the Del Mare club, which also runs surfing, SUP and sailing there. The school describes its site as one in the middle of nature, with loungers on the pier. Next door lies the Groot Molsbroek nature reserve, about 125 hectares, which is not part of the pond.
Children without surf experience start at ten, and boards take riders up to about 130 kg. One person gets an hour on the water, two or three share the slot at 45 minutes each, and every session opens with 15 minutes of explanation. Wetsuit, helmet, impact vest and a board each are included. Three one-hour sessions cost €300, an extra quarter hour €20. You send a form with a few dates, the school calls back, and you pay on site. The school teaches wing foil and pump foil too, and it sells Waydoo and Flite eFoils, new and used.
The coast, and the water around Antwerp and Ghent
A Flemish beach club sends you out through its launch zone and back in through it, a club lake puts you on the club's own boards, and the rivers and canals belong to a waterway manager that considers them unsuitable for boards.
Knokke-Heist and the rest of the coast
Surfers Paradise sits on the beach at Knokke-Heist, reached via the Appelzakstraat, and works with the Fliteboard dealer eFoilservice. It goes out on flat, windless days, outside the surf and the breakwaters. You give the club your free days and it calls when one matches the sea. An hour costs €150 per person (members €140), alone or as a pair, and the second person can ride along on the guide's jet ski. After a lesson you may hire a board at €110 an hour (members €100), keeping to the club's rules on launching, landing and zones. Non-members add personal accident insurance at €4.50 a day. Wetsuit, impact jacket and helmet are supplied, and there are changing rooms and showers. The club describes its boards as having a propeller guard, a motor that stops when you let go of the safety button, and leashes on board and remote.

Farther west the coast belongs to wing foil. Nieuwpoort, Oostende, De Panne, Koksijde and Blankenberge have no eFoil school. Wing clubs, on the other hand, line the beach from Side Shore Surfers in De Panne through Koksijde, Oostende and Wenduine to Icarus Beachclub at Zeebrugge, and Sport Vlaanderen in Nieuwpoort offers a two-hour wing foil discovery lesson with a qualified instructor. Surfers Paradise runs a wing foil centre as well, starting beginners on a wheeled speedsail on the hard sand when it can. For non-members, a wing initiation with an hour of speedsail practice costs €80, and a water lesson plus an hour of practice €100, IKO certification included.
Bruges and the Sint-Pietersplas
Aan de Plas, at Blankenbergse dijk 75, is a water sports domain with a sports hostel on the Sint-Pietersplas, about 16 hectares and some 5 m deep on average. Its route to wing foiling runs eFoil first, then a wing on a SUP, then the wing foil. Foil gear is rented only after at least one lesson, and Aan de Plas sets its own eFoil terms. Swimming in the lake is for members of certain clubs at set times.

Antwerp and its tidal rivers
The schools all sit outside Antwerp itself. Boatnomads puts its lessons in Viersel: “The eFoil lessons will take place at the water sports club in Viersel, Antwerp. We will eFoil in the canal near the club.” Otherwise Hombeek lies to the south and Waasmunster to the west.
The rivers are no substitute. The waterway rules mark fast stretches on the Rupel, on the Beneden-Nete downstream of the motorway bridge at Walem and on the Beneden-Durme downstream of the bridge at Hamme, leaving out 10 m zones along the banks. De Vlaamse Waterweg's recreation vision says its current fast stretches are not suitable for allowing the eFoil in general.
Ghent: two city waters, no motors
Ghent's police regulation on sport and recreation sites (chapter 14, approved 19 November 1990, last amended 22 April 2024) bans motorboats on the Blaarmeersen except for service reasons and events (art. 14) and closes that pond to all use between sunset and sunrise (art. 13). The Watersportbaan Georges Nachez allows rowing and paddle boats, pedalos and similar craft (art. 21.1), wants the mayor's permission for sailing boats (art. 21.2) and bans motorboats and craft with an outboard motor, apart from boats in authorized races or events and city service boats (art. 22.1). The text never names the eFoil, and we read neither water as open to one. From Ghent, Waasmunster is the nearer school.
Brussels and Wallonia
Brussels has a board shop and no school. Matos Surf & Kite Shop sells Lift boards. FuturWave, the official SiFly and JetWave dealer in Belgium, arranges test rides in Belgium or the Netherlands. eFoilservice, a Fliteboard dealer and service shop, lists two “Fliteschool” locations, Hombeek and Knokke-Heist. Matos and FuturWave do not teach, and none of the three has water of its own.
Wallonia offers wing foiling at the Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure. The Espace Fun in Froidchapelle rents and coaches it, and the Belgium Kitesurf Association runs its wing foil school there on the Lac de la Plate Taille, in three two-hour modules with a safety boat and lessons in several languages. Neither mentions the eFoil. Walloon lakes set their rules lake by lake, and none of them has an eFoil lesson or rental on offer that we know of.
Is eFoiling allowed in Belgium?
Yes, in a lesson at one of the schools. With a board of your own the answer narrows fast. No Belgian law text names the eFoil, from the Belgian Shipping Code and the royal decree on pleasure craft to the Flemish inland navigation rules (APSB) and the Knokke-Heist, Oostende and Ghent regulations. The board has to be fitted into rules written for boats, surfboards and water scooters. The text that applies depends on the water: federal decrees at sea and on the coast, Flemish rules on the rivers and canals, town regulations on the beaches, club rules on the lakes.
The board under federal law
Book 5 of the Belgian Shipping Code covers pleasure craft from 2.5 m and water scooters, not surf sport gear such as kites, windsurfers and surfboards (art. 5.1.1.2). A water scooter is a pleasure craft under 4 m driven mainly by a water jet pump (art. 5.1.1.1, 1°). The royal decree on pleasure craft of 28 June 2019 asks no license in zones 1 and 2 unless, among other cases, a motor craft can go faster than 20 km/h (art. 4.1 §2), and pupils under an instructor are exempt (art. 4.1 §4).
We read a propeller eFoil, well under 2.5 m, as falling outside Book 5, and so outside registration, the steering license and the 20 km/h trigger. A jet-driven electric board under 4 m is a water scooter on that reading, with registration, a license and the water scooter stretches only. In a lesson with an instructor you need no license on either kind of board.
At the coast: in and out through a launch zone
Along the Belgian beaches no craft may put to sea except from places designated by the shipping control or the Region's services, and elsewhere none may come within 200 m of the beach save in force majeure (royal decree of 4 August 1981, art. 39, as in force since 23 January 2026). The pleasure craft decree defines the insteekzone, a launch zone for surf sports, next to the swimming, safety and buffer zones, all measured from the low water line (art. 7.1). Pleasure craft stay out of the swimming, buffer and safety zones, and surf sports stop between sunset and sunrise (art. 7.3). A wetsuit is required in the launch zone; beyond it you also need a life jacket or impact vest and a way to send a distress signal (art. 7.8 §1).
Knokke-Heist's general police regulation (approved 27 August 2026, published 1 September 2026) puts its launch zones at the water sport clubs, marked by two red cylinder buoys at the low water line and a sign reading “verplichte insteekzone watersporten” (art. 129). Starting or ending a water sport outside them is banned (art. 128 §1), and riders must keep control and a safe distance from the groynes (art. 130). Jet skis may not go to or from the beach (art. 131). The regulation counts the coastal zone out to half a nautical mile (926 m) and the sea zone from 926 to 3,704 m, and the Baai van Heist nature reserve is not part of the beach (art. 25). Watch the flags: a green triangle with a windsurfer means club supervision and rescue, red means supervision without rescue, and no flag means neither (art. 130 §1).
Oostende's beach and dunes regulation (last amended 31 August 2026) bans launching water scooters, jet skis and similar craft from the beach, apart from the rescue jet scooters of recognized clubs (art. 033), and its definition of water sport lists only sports without a motor. For an eFoil that leaves no beach launch in Oostende, as we read it.
Put the texts together and the coast comes out like this: an eFoil starts and lands only in a launch zone whose club admits motorized boards, and that differs by town and by club. At Knokke-Heist, Surfers Paradise rents only after a lesson and on its own zone rules.
Rivers, canals and lakes in Flanders
Inland, the APSB counts even an object without displacement as a vessel (art. 1.01 a) and allows speeds above 20 km/h only by day, with 500 m of visibility, on signed stretches (art. 1.01 f8 and 6.35/1). The APSB does not apply in the coastal ports or on the beaches (royal decree of 24 September 2006, art. 2). Citing APSB articles 1.04, 1.06, 6.19 and 6.37, the VisuRIS service considers the Flemish waterways unsuitable for high-speed forms above the water, such as flyboarding, and for boards, foiling included.
De Vlaamse Waterweg's paper “Visie recreatie op de Vlaamse waterwegen” (version 2022, page 28) is a policy text and not a regulation. It says motorized boards such as the eFoil need room, and that the current fast stretches on its network are not suitable for allowing the sport in general. Its supplementary rules (version 4.0, approved 17 December 2025, in force since 22 January 2026) also require a permit of De Vlaamse Waterweg for motor craft on the navigable Demer and Dijle, including the Dijleafleiding, on the navigable Zenne, and on the canalized Durme between the Oude Statiënbrug and the Lokeren pumping station (art. 5.2, 8.12, 8.13 and 16.2).
Nature reserves and small rivers are closed by other texts. The Nature Decree bans sport and motor vehicles in nature reserves unless a management plan exempts them (art. 35 §2), and the Flemish government decree of 7 May 2021 bans motorized craft on non-navigable watercourses without the water manager's written permission (art. 21). So no eFoiling in the Baai van Heist or on a small river, as we read those two, which leaves the club lakes, where the club sets the terms.
Those paragraphs sum up the texts and are not legal advice; the town, waterway manager or club has the last word on its own water. On insurance, Efoil Mechelen includes a day's cover in the lesson and Surfers Paradise charges non-members €4.50 a day for accident cover; for a private board, check your own policy. Other countries are in our eFoil rules guide.
Where to book from Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent or the coast
Two of the schools list €150 for a first lesson, so the water, the age limit and the way you book decide most cases. From Brussels or Mechelen the answer is Hombeek, a short walk from its station and booked in the club's own system. From Antwerp, Hombeek and Waasmunster are both a drive away, and the road decides. From Ghent and the Waasland it is Waasmunster, beside Lokeren. A child between 10 and 15 goes to Waasmunster, since Hombeek starts at 16.
On a coast holiday you book Surfers Paradise in Knokke-Heist around the forecast, and once you have had the lesson, hire is open to you. A wing foiler with a calm day to fill is in luck there, because the club does both, and its Starter Pack (€490 for non-members) bundles a wing initiation and water lesson, an hour of eFoil and an hour at the Lakeside Paradise 2.0 cable. If you plan to keep riding, WVD membership opens rental at Hombeek, and both lakes sell three-lesson packs.
Hombeek starts you on a 150 L board, and our beginner boards guide compares the models a first lesson tends to use. On the windy days the coast clubs teach wing foiling.
Zeeland, Limburg and the French coast
From De Panne the nearest eFoil lesson is across the French border at Bray-Dunes, and from Belgian Limburg or Liège it is on the Dutch Maasplassen at Thorn, near Roermond. Zeeland lies just north of West Flanders and the Waasland.

Natural High teaches on the sea side of the Brouwersdam with Lift boards. Its one-day course puts two riders on a board, four at most, for 1.5 hours; a duo hour costs €115 per person, a private hour €140, and riders with experience can rent for €75 an hour. Foil School Nederland, on the same dam, charges €150 per person for a private lesson and asks for a swimming diploma. E-Flow in Thorn runs open group lessons for up to six, private lessons at €149 per person and a three-lesson course from €289. It takes riders from 16 and up to 100 kg, with a swimming diploma, and rents (€69 for 50 minutes) only after its course and from 18.
With a board of your own, the Netherlands asks for a klein vaarbewijs once a craft can pass 20 km/h (Binnenvaartbesluit art. 16(1)(d)). Its list of accepted foreign licenses (Binnenvaartregeling art. 7.11(1), annex 7.1) includes the Belgian brevet yachtman for all inland waters, and the RDW accepts Belgian registration papers. More schools and the details are on our eFoil Netherlands page.
The two French bases work under the sea rules on our eFoil France page. ALOHA, at 656 Digue de mer in Bray-Dunes, rents on the beach when the wind stays under 5 knots and otherwise moves to “le lac de Nieuport”. Wimkite in Wissant teaches from age 12.
When the water is warm enough
Spot readings at the Eglegemvijver from 2024 to 2026 ran about 16 to 18 °C in May, 21 to 25 °C in July and August and 19 to 24 °C in September. Waterplas De Mare was close, at 15 to 18 °C in May. June swings the most on both lakes, from the high teens to the upper twenties.
The sea is colder. Measured offshore at Vlakte van de Raan, about 17 km off Knokke-Heist, it runs about 14 °C in May, 16 to 18 °C in June, about 21 °C in July and August, 18 to 19 °C in September and 15 °C in October. All three Belgian schools include a wetsuit.
An eFoil needs no wind, and on the coast it wants a flat sea with little swell, the day a wing foiler would skip. A coast weekend can pair a calm eFoil day with a windy wing day for that reason. On the lakes, EFOIL Vlaanderen rides through a few drops of rain and stops for strong gusts and thunderstorms, and Efoil Mechelen makes the call on its own slots. What a lesson usually includes, and how rental works elsewhere, is in our eFoil rental guide. All three Belgian schools may move a booking for the weather, so keep a second date in hand.
