A lesson at Mackenzie Beach, a guided session from Oroklini or a ride on your own: what each costs, who it suits and which months fit it

Last updated:

Mackenzie Beach, Oroklini and Kiti

Mackenzie Beach lies 5 km from Larnaca airport and 5 km from the town center, and Windsurf City Cyprus teaches eFoil there on SiFly boards. eFoil Riders, the second school, has no beach of its own: its Larnaca meeting point is the Supbay spot in Oroklini, and the same team runs sessions in Limassol, Paphos and Protaras. Down the coast at Kiti, Kahuna Surfhouse lists “e-foil” among its sports.

What you book depends on whether you have flown a foil before. A beginner gets a lesson, with the instructor alongside for the first flights, or a guided session that puts land drills before the water. Someone who already flies pays for board time and nothing else.

A hire car from the airport drives on the left, like everything else in Cyprus, which takes a few minutes of getting used to on the road to Oroklini or Kiti. Bringing a board is a different matter. Airlines follow IATA, which puts a passenger lithium battery above 160 Wh into cargo as dangerous goods, and an eFoil pack is well beyond that figure, so visitors rent. Our eFoil battery guide explains what sits inside those packs.

The 1.5 hour lesson at Mackenzie

Windsurf City's lesson costs €129 and runs for an hour and a half. It is built for beginners and asks for no previous experience, only that you swim with confidence. Board, helmet, impact vest and wetsuit are part of the price. You bring swimwear, a towel and a high protection sunscreen.

The first part happens on the sand: a safety briefing and an introduction to the board. On the water you lie on it, then kneel and cruise steadily, then take your first flights on the foil with the instructor guiding you. Standing up and “touch and go” landings come last.

The fleet is SiFly, the Easy Rider and the Rider+. Windsurf City is a VDWS member. Everyone checks in on the safety board before going out and checks out on return, and during opening hours a team member watches the water with a rescue jet ski or boat. The school gives its season as March to October. More about the maker is in our SiFly review.

Two people, one board

The E-Foil Experience for Two costs €227 and also lasts 1.5 hours. Two people share one board and one instructor: 30 minutes on the beach, then 30 minutes on the eFoil each, one rider at a time. Each of you also gets 30 minutes of rental for another day.

No minimum age appears on the lesson page. The rental price list carries a kids rate for ages 7 to 17, so children do ride at Mackenzie. For a lesson, tell the school the child's age when booking and leave the call to them.

eFoil Riders and the guided session

eFoil Riders CY has no base. The school describes itself as “powered by Sifly e-foils” and travels to its clients anywhere on the island; bookings run through the Manawa platform, which shows the price at checkout. Larnaca riders meet the team at the Supbay spot in Mesopotamias, Oroklini 7041 (plus code XM77+692), where parking is free.

The guided session is for complete beginners and takes 1 hour 45 minutes on site. Gear fitting comes first, then a safety briefing on land of 15 to 20 minutes, land training on a simulator and a few minutes of dry practice on the board with the remote. In the water you ride lying down, then kneeling, then make stand-up attempts with the instructor close by. Independent riding takes 20 to 30 minutes before the return and a debrief. Weather can shorten the session or move it.

A certified instructor, the electric hydrofoil, helmet, life jacket, wetsuit, insurance and battery costs are all in the price. The description also mentions a light impact vest and helmets with radio links to the coach. Photos and videos cost extra, paid on site. The listing gives English, Greek, Russian and Bulgarian as its languages.

The operator's conditions

Riders must be at least 12, able to swim and in good physical condition, and may weigh no more than 110 kg (242 lbs). The session is not recommended in pregnancy, and the listing says it is not accessible for people with disabilities. The operator sets these terms. None of them is law.

The listing contradicts itself on group size. Its headline promises “1-to-1 expert coaching for ages 12 to 85”, while the details mention “small groups limited to 3 participants per guide”. If you want private coaching, ask which one you are booking before you confirm.

Board time without an instructor

At Mackenzie, Windsurf City rents its SiFly boards by the half hour or the hour, with a separate rate for kids from 7 to 17. Equipment insurance comes with every rental. It covers damage from normal use on the water. Crashes, ground contact and negligence fall outside it, so a foil that hits the bottom in the shallows is on you. The page names no weight limit and no experience condition.

Two riders can split an hour. The school's wording is “Double use of equipment +30% (1 person on the water at a time)”, meaning one board, two riders taking turns and a surcharge on the rate. Two half hours booked separately can come out cheaper, so this buys convenience more than savings.

eFoil Riders sells a 30 minute self guided ride from its Oroklini meeting point to riders with previous eFoil experience. Count on 45 minutes on site, a quick check of that experience and gear fitting included. An impact vest and helmet are mandatory, and the age, swimming and 110 kg rules match the guided session.

Windsurf City's “Electric surfboard” session is a jetboard with no foil under it, so do not compare it with the eFoil rates. Our electric surfboard guide explains the difference, and the wider eFoil rental guide shows how hire works in other countries.

Prices, with the sums two people pay

Of the three, Windsurf City alone prints a full eFoil price list on its own site. The eFoil Riders price appears at checkout on Manawa, and Kahuna Surfhouse has none for eFoil.

Two of you, both new to it

Two separate lessons come to €258. The E-Foil Experience for Two costs €227, €31 less, and what you give up is time on the foil: one board between you and 30 minutes each where a full lesson gives more. In return the package holds 30 minutes of rental per person on another day, €98 for the two of you at the half hour list price. Couples who can come back for that second ride do better with the shared lesson.

A lesson followed by an hour's rental

One lesson plus an hour of rental adds up to €219. Whether a learner may rent straight after the lesson is something the rental page does not say, so clear it with the school before you count on it.

Two who already fly, one board

If the 30% double use surcharge sits on the hourly rate, one shared hour costs €117, under €60 each. Two half hours booked separately cost €98. Unless the school counts double use some other way, the separate half hours come out cheaper, so have the figure confirmed.

Kahuna Surfhouse and the Kiti shore

Kahuna Surfhouse sits on Softades beach in Kiti, in Larnaca district, 10 to 15 minutes by road from the airport and from town. Kitesurf, surf, wing, stand up paddle and eFoil are all on its list, but there is no eFoil page and no eFoil price on its site. Message the school before you plan a day around it.

Wing foil is the sport Kahuna does price: 2 hour lessons from age 12, €100 semi private or €130 private. KiteMed, also at Kiti, has no eFoil. It describes the bay as more than 10 km long and shallow, with SUP in the morning and kitesurfing after 12:00, once the wind builds.

If an eFoil session leaves you wanting the foil without the motor, our wing foil lessons guide describes that step.

A day at Mackenzie Beach

Mackenzie is about a kilometer of sand close to the site of the old Larnaca airport. In the Cyprus tourism authority's description it is a Blue Flag beach with calm, clear and shallow water, a wide range of water sports and a row of bars and clubs along the sand, and lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid are on duty from June to October. Windsurf City spells the name MacKenzie.

The school fills in what a learner wants to know. Mornings are usually calm, and the water stays only waist deep almost 50 m out. Sunbeds and umbrellas are for rent, there are showers, restaurants, coffee shops and children's playgrounds, and a wheelchair can reach the sand.

The school splits a high season day, May to August, into three stages. Early morning brings no wind and a flat sea, good for SUP, eFoil and pump foil. A light breeze sets in from about 10 am. After lunch the wind is strong, 18 to 25 knots with a small chop, which suits the more advanced windsurfers. The first of those three stages is the one to book the eFoil for. For a live reading, Windfinder runs weather stations at “Mackenzie Beach / Windsurf City Cyprus” and at Kahuna's beach in Softades.

From wetsuit months to board shorts

Windsurf City runs from March to October and publishes its own sea temperatures for Mackenzie, month by month, with what to wear in each. The wind column holds long term monthly means measured at Larnaca International Airport and published by Windfinder; over the year they average about 9 knots.

For the open sea, the Cyprus tourism authority gives above 22 °C from June to November, about 27 °C in August, and 16 to 17 °C on average from January to March. Summer is long and dry, from mid May to mid October, with a sea breeze cooling the coast. Winter, December to February, is mild.

By Windfinder's statistic, the mean wind blows from about south to southwest from March to October, the sea breeze. From November to February it swings round to northwest and north-northeast. June and July are the windiest months, with 4 Beaufort or more in about 30 to 33 % of readings, against 13 % in October. In high summer that puts the eFoil in the morning. October has fewer windy afternoons to work around, and the water is still 25 °C.

What Cypriot law says about a fast board

Cyprus has no rule written for the eFoil. No law, Deputy Ministry page or police leaflet names it, so the question is whether a board counts as a high speed small vessel under Law 56(I)/1992 ↗, as amended up to Law 104(I)/2020. Article 2 draws the line at motorized craft no longer than 15 m that can reach at least 15 knots, with no engine power threshold, so whether a given board is covered comes down, in our reading, to its top speed.

Where it applies, Article 4(1) requires an operator or learner license. Article 4(2) accepts an equivalent foreign speedboat license or certificate of competence from foreigners and from Cypriots living permanently abroad. Article 4(4) lets a renter aged 18 or over take a category B craft rented for private use without a license, within 6 nautical miles of the rental point and with a signed declaration. Under Article 5(1) the operator wears a lifejacket or buoyancy aid, and Article 15(2) asks for an automatic engine cut off connected to the operator while under way.

On the beach, Regulation 31(1) of P.I. 121/1999 ↗ holds speedboats to 3 knots within 100 m of the shore and in the channels between bathing areas, and the Bathing Protection Law 72/1968 ↗ (Article 4) bars any craft, sailboards included, from passing or stopping in a declared bathing area, with up to six months in prison, a fine of up to €860, or both. The Port and Marine Police leaflet keeps swimmers inside the areas marked by red buoys and out of the channels that run out from the beach. Craft stay out of the swimmers' area and use those channels at under 3 knots, kill cord attached.

Whoever rents gear from the sand holds a public beach facilities license from the municipal or community council, issued under the Foreshore Protection Law, Cap. 59; the Deputy Ministry of Tourism lists licensed water sports operators on safewatersports.com.

Law 4(I)/2026 on recreational navigation, published on 13 February 2026, will repeal the 1992 law once the Council of Ministers sets a start date, and until then the 1992 law stands. License steps, the Lara closure and the rest of the island are in our Cyprus eFoil guide, and the eFoil rules page compares other countries.

We read these texts as riders, not as lawyers. The operator or the Port and Marine Police can tell you what applies on a given beach.

Loose ends to clear with the school

Before you pay, send the school a one line message on each of these points; its pages settle none of them.

  • Windsurf City: a minimum age for the lesson, and a weight limit for lesson and rental.
  • Windsurf City: whether a learner can rent a board straight after the lesson, and whether the +30% double use surcharge sits on the hourly rate.
  • eFoil Riders: whether the guided session is one to one or a small group of up to three per guide.
  • eFoil Riders: what photos and video cost on site, and what the water is like at the Supbay spot on the day.
  • Kahuna Surfhouse: whether it runs eFoil sessions at all, and at what price.
  • Any of them: which time of day they would put you on the water, given the afternoon wind.

With a free morning and no experience, Mackenzie is the simple choice: waist deep water, a fixed price, a school on the sand. eFoil Riders suits anyone who wants the simulator and the radio helmet, or who is staying out toward Oroklini. Riders who already fly can pick between a 30 minute self ride at the Supbay spot and an hour at Mackenzie shared between two. What eFoil sessions and boards cost in general is in our eFoil price guide, and the Greek islands and Athens are in our Greece eFoil guide.

Frequently asked questions

What does the €129 eFoil lesson at Mackenzie Beach include?

An hour and a half with Windsurf City Cyprus, with board, helmet, impact vest and wetsuit in the price and no previous experience asked for. Two people who share one board and one instructor pay €227 for the E-Foil Experience for Two.

How young can a child ride an eFoil in Larnaca?

Windsurf City's rental list has a kids rate from 7 to 17, and eFoil Riders takes riders from 12. The lesson page at Mackenzie names no minimum age, so give the child's age when you book and let the school decide.

Is there a weight limit at the Larnaca eFoil schools?

eFoil Riders stops at 110 kg (242 lbs). Windsurf City publishes none, so give your weight when you book.

Does the Cypriot speedboat license apply to a rented eFoil?

Nobody official has said. Law 56(I)/1992 reaches motorized craft up to 15 m that can do 15 knots, and no Cypriot law, ministry page or police leaflet names eFoils, so as we read it a board falls inside or outside the law on its top speed. Where the law does apply, Article 4(4) lets a renter aged 18 or over take a craft rented for private use without a license, after signing a declaration. The school will tell you what it wants from you.

Can my own eFoil battery fly with me to Larnaca?

No. A passenger lithium battery above 160 Wh travels as dangerous goods cargo under IATA rules, and an eFoil pack carries far more than that. The board stays at home and you rent at Mackenzie or Oroklini.

Is October too late for an eFoil session in Larnaca?

No. Windsurf City's season runs through October, its own figure for the sea at Mackenzie that month is 25 °C, and Windfinder counts 4 Beaufort or more in only 13 % of October readings, against 30 to 33 % in June and July. The warmest water comes from July to September, at 28 °C.
