Capbreton to Noirmoutier, with Bordeaux inland
The nearest boards to Bordeaux are on the lake at Lacanau, about 42 km north-west, and on Arcachon Bay, about 55 km south-west; the city itself has no school. Behind the surf beaches on either side of the bay lie big freshwater lakes, the Médoc ones to the north and the Landes ones to the south, and at the bottom of the Landes coast a port school works out of Capbreton. Cross the Gironde estuary and the Royan beaches begin, then the islands: Ré, Oléron and Noirmoutier.
Sea and lake are governed differently. At sea the eFoil has a legal name and a national rulebook, and the beach plans fill in the local detail. Every lake has a prefectoral text of its own, and most of those texts never mention the eFoil. On nearly every lake here that leaves a private rider shut out or on uncertain ground, and a school session is how you get onto the water. The whole country, Mediterranean and Alps included, is on the eFoil in France guide.
Arcachon Bay and Cap Ferret
At high tide the Bassin d'Arcachon covers about 174 km²; at low tide it shrinks to about 60 km², with a mean spring range of 3.8 m. Shallow lagoons are left between the banks, and the upper oyster flats (the crassats) can be reached only within 3 hours either side of high water.
Efoil Arcachon, CRUZE, Glisse en Herbe and FoilXperience all put a first session at €150; Arca Rent Foil is the one operator on the Bassin that prices differently. Efoil Arcachon's €150 buys an hour on the water after a beach briefing of 15 to 30 minutes. At Cap Ferret, CRUZE coaches from an eFoil of its own beside you (€280 for two) and rents only to riders it has certified. Glisse en Herbe teaches 1 h 30 from its cabin in the village de l'Herbe, in summer, from age 7.
FoilXperience follows riders by boat with a walkie-talkie link from Pyla-sur-Mer and Cap Ferret. One rider on one board pays €150. Two sharing a board pay €100 each, and whoever is not riding waits in the boat; three on two boards pay €120 each. Coaching, the boat, the radio, kit and civil liability insurance are all included.
Arca Rent Foil, on the quai du Commandant Silhouette in Arcachon, also brings its Fliteboards to you, at home, to your own boat or to any spot on the Bassin. An initiation of 45 minutes to 1 h 30 for 1 to 10 people costs €65 to €75 per person, from age 12 for anyone at ease in the water. Confirmed riders take a guided hour at €150 or a solo hour at €100 per board.

The mouth of the bay is a field of moving sandbanks, the Passes, between Cap Ferret and the 109 m Dune du Pilat. Inside the bay, boat shuttles run between the jetée Thiers in Arcachon and Bélisaire at Cap Ferret, so both shores fit into one day without the long drive around.
Speed limits and channels inside the Bassin
Premar Atlantique arrêté 2020/040 of 10 July 2020 caps speed at 20 knots inside the Bassin (art. 1-1), and 10 knots on the longitudinal transit of the passe sud (art. 1-2, as amended on 21 April 2022 by arrêté 2022/057).
The Arcachon beach plan, arrêté 2023/140, reserves the Arbousiers channel for the way out and back of dinghies, windsurfers, kite boards and motor boards. A board over 4.5 kW may only transit through it. One of 4.5 kW or less rides only there and in the Péreire reserved zone, where it is barred from noon to 7 pm on 1 to 13 July and 16 to 31 August, and to 8 pm from 14 July to 15 August. Lège-Cap Ferret has its own plan, arrêté 2023/157.
The whole bay lies in the Parc naturel marin du Bassin d'Arcachon (décret 2014-588). On the Banc d'Arguin reserve, décret 2017-945 (art. 19-III) sets 5 knots in the zones of reinforced protection drawn by arrêté 2025/080, and the prés salés of Arès and Lège-Cap Ferret are a separate reserve with rules of their own.
Lacanau and Hourtin-Carcans
The Lac de Lacanau covers about 2,000 ha and is 7 m deep at most. Its eFoil schools all sit at the Moutchic, next to the lake police office. Watch for Egeria densa, an invasive weed that grows in the shallows and can catch a foil.
Evolution 2 Lacanau, on the Plage du Moutchic by the Splash Parc, sells an hour from €110 per person, alone or shared by two, on Lift and SiFly boards, with wetsuit, vest, booties, helmet and radio. You start on your knees. Bewind Lacanau teaches as well and rents by the hour to riders who can already go out alone; a beginner needs one coached session first. There is no published eFoil price, and every activity there asks that you can swim 50 m.
E-Foil Expérience works both lakes from its own boat, which takes up to 8 people, at the Moutchic and at Piqueyrot and Bombannes on Hourtin-Carcans. An hour on a Flite board with an instructor in your Bluetooth headset costs €130, each extra hour €100, and a standard session runs about 1 h 30 with briefing and kit, from age 12.
Hourtin-Carcans, about 18 km long, is the largest natural freshwater lake wholly in France. Maubuisson Nautic on the main beach of Carcans-Maubuisson rents without a lesson, €50 for half an hour and €100 for an hour.

What the 2014 lake rules say
The prefectoral rules for both lakes date from 1 September 2014 and do not mention the eFoil. On Lacanau, article 2-5 bans jet skis “et engins apparentés” (and similar craft), article 2-10 bans any use the text does not provide for, and speed is 10 km/h outside the 300 m shore band (art. 2-4) and 3 km/h inside it (art. 3-2).
On Hourtin-Carcans, jet skis are kept to their zone at the Baie de Malignac (art. 2-4 and 3-5), unlisted uses are banned (art. 2-11), a 500 m band along most of the east shore is closed (art. 3-1) and the shore band is held to 5 km/h (art. 3-2). The lake part of the Hourtin dunes and marshes reserve is shut to navigation (décret 2009-1567, art. 17-I). At Carcans, the mooring zones ban “planches de foil” without the port authority's express permission (règlement of 30 March 2023), and arrêté 41/2026 bans all navigation in and within 50 m of supervised bathing zones. Neither lake allows navigation at night (art. 2-3).
Add those articles up and a privately ridden eFoil lands on unclear ground on both lakes, closer to banned than allowed. That is how we read the texts; the schools ride under their own arrangements.
Cazaux-Sanguinet, Léon and the port of Capbreton
eFoil Sanguinet rides the Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet, 15 minutes from Arcachon and 45 from Bordeaux by its own count, and sells it as water with no swell, no current and no tide. The 1 h 30 initiation, about 40 minutes of it riding, is €120.
The lake straddles the Gironde and Landes border, and its inter-prefectoral arrêté of 25 January 2024 treats the two halves differently. On the Gironde part, article 2-3 bans “planches à moteur”. The Landes part does not name the board; the cautious reading, ours, treats it as a jet ski. That means Monday to Thursday, 3 pm to 7 pm, inside the two areas of article 3-4 (off Navarosse at Biscarrosse, and beyond the 300 m band at Sanguinet from the Estey channel), never in the 300 m band itself (art. 3-3, 5 km/h there under art. 2-5) and never at night (art. 2-2).
Léon and Capbreton
The Lac de Léon drains to the sea through the Courant d'Huchet nature reserve. Foil in Landes teaches from the rue des Berges du Lac, and its partner shop Oh My Board lists €60 for 30 minutes or €100 for an hour, kit and walkie-talkie included. The commune's rule of 30 June 2021 holds any motor craft to 10 km/h (art. 6.1), allows electric beach craft up to 3 kW (art. 6.3) and keeps all craft out of the reserve (art. 6.5). A board does not lift at 10 km/h, so Léon, as we read the rule, works only through the school's arrangement with the commune.
At sea, two schools leave from the port of Capbreton. Ecole Sud Landes Foil charges €150 for an hour (a 15 minute briefing, then 45 minutes off the beaches of Capbreton and Hossegor with a boat), boarding at Quai AL. Jet Landes Family, Quai du Bourret, lists a one-hour initiation from €150 per board.
Royan, La Palmyre, Ré, Oléron and La Rochelle
Around Royan, at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, €89 is the first-session price at all three schools. Ewatersport, on the beach of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, gives you 45 minutes on the water for that, from age 14, on Fliteboards coached through an audio link. Greenfoil covers Royan, Saint-Palais and Saint-Georges at €89 for 45 minutes or €168 for two, booked by phone. WaveFoil, a travelling school with a state-qualified instructor, teaches in the Baie de Bonne Anse at La Palmyre, sheltered behind the Pointe de la Coubre. It charges €89 for an hour and €49 for 30 minutes, from age 14.
Ré, Oléron and La Rochelle
On Ré, Île de Ré Kitesurf teaches at Rivedoux-Plage, where the bridge lands, with two pupils per instructor, SiFly boards and a safety boat. Its hour costs €130 on weekdays outside school holidays, €140 at weekends, Easter and Toussaint, and €150 in July, August and on public holidays. Ré Glisse, also at Rivedoux, rents two PWR FOIL boards at high tide only, €75 for 30 minutes. The Club Nautique des Portes-en-Ré uses the eFoil inside its wing and kite lessons.
Wind Oléron Club rents from the Anse de la Perroche at Dolus-d'Oléron, €90 for 30 minutes and €150 for an hour plus a compulsory handover, to riders who confirm they are independent. If you would sooner have a private lesson, the club arranges one on request. In La Rochelle itself, AWL Beach (Air Water Loisirs) has the eFoil on its list of activities.
No departmental text bans the eFoil in Charente-Maritime. The beach plans draw the exclusion zones and channels: Royan 2025/071 of 17 June 2025, Les Mathes-La Palmyre 2025/072 of 3 June 2025, La Rochelle 2024/137 of 20 June 2024 and Dolus-d'Oléron 2026/102 of 30 June 2026. All vessels are barred from the Fort Boyard perimeter (2026/081 of 4 June 2026, art. 1), the Passe de Maumusson between Oléron and La Tremblade is closed to pleasure craft (2025/184 of 13 October 2025), and in the Fier d'Ars on Ré sport craft are held to five knots (arrêté 02/64 of 8 January 1964).
Noirmoutier, the Vendée's eFoil island
Noirmoutier is about 20 km long, with about 15 km of dunes on its ocean side and the baie de Bourgneuf to the east. You reach it by the bridge or, at low tide only, by the passage du Gois, a causeway the sea covers at high water.
Le Bureau du Vent, at the Port de Morin in L'Épine, teaches one-hour lessons to four people at most on Lift boards, with a permanent radio link. One session is €120, three €330, five €500, and a duo hour on one board €160. The school sells the eFoil as an activity that needs no particular weather. Light wind is the eFoil's day and the wing's day off.
Mouv'N Kite, at the Pointe de la Fosse in Barbâtre, runs a 1 h 30 discovery course for €130 with two pupils at most, from age 8. After one or two lessons comes a guided 1 h 30 ride toward the Route du Gois or the Bois de la Chaize, also €130, with the instructor in a boat. The L'Épine beach plan, 2012/059 of 12 June 2012, sets the bathing zones and channels on the west shore, and nobody may come within 50 m of a turbine of the Yeu-Noirmoutier wind farm (Premar 2026/071 of 19 May 2026).
First-session prices from the Bassin to Noirmoutier
€89 buys a first coached session around Royan and at La Palmyre. €150 is the figure on Arcachon Bay, at Capbreton and on Ré in high season. An hour on the lakes falls between the two at €100 to €130, Noirmoutier asks €120 to €130, and the cheapest way onto a board anywhere on this coast is Arca Rent Foil's group initiation on the Bassin, €65 to €75 a head for 1 to 10 people.

The sea rules from the Basque border to Brittany
The rule you meet first on this coast is the 300 m band, and here it moves. Premar Atlantique arrêté 2018/090 of 28 June 2018, which covers the shore from Ille-et-Vilaine to the Spanish border, measures the band from the water's edge at the moment (art. 1), so it follows the tide out across the sand and back. Every craft inside it is held to 5 knots (art. 2), except inside port limits and in estuaries upstream of the transverse sea limit (art. 5). Article 3.1, as amended by arrêté 2019-006, keeps motor boards out of buoyed bathing and beach-craft zones and in their reserved channels where a plan sets them.
What the board is, in law, is settled nationally. Division 240, article 240-1.02 III 4, in force since 7 June 2026, calls it a “planche nautique à moteur” (PNM), a board under 2.5 m with a thermal or electric motor, with or without a foil. Article 240-2.11, in force since 31 October 2024, keeps a PNM to daylight and within 2 nautical miles of a shelter, and from 300 m out asks for a buoyancy aid of at least 50 N (or a qualifying suit) and a waterproof personal light with 6 hours of autonomy. The equipment paragraph says only “ils” (they); we read it as covering motor boards.
Inside the band and on the beach the mayor holds the police power (CGCT, article L2213-23), so the beach plan of each town decides where a board crosses the shore. The national picture is on the eFoil rules guide. Take all of this as a reader's summary of the texts, not a legal opinion.
Tide, sea breeze and water temperature
Going north, the tide gets bigger. Arcachon has a mean spring range of 3.8 m; at La Pallice, La Rochelle's port, mean high water springs reach 6.10 m over a low of 1.00 m above chart datum. Arcachon Bay also gets a thermal sea breeze on many summer afternoons, which leaves the morning as the smooth part of the day.
None of that reaches the lakes. They sit a few kilometers behind the surf beaches of the Médoc and the Landes with no tide and no swell, and a rough day on the ocean can still be a flat one on Lacanau.
Water temperature peaks at about 22 °C in Arcachon Bay in August and bottoms out near 11 °C in February; Royan reads 21.3 °C and 9.6 °C for the same two months. Most sea schools publish a spring to autumn season, Glisse en Herbe teaches in summer, and a few operators take winter bookings.
Bordeaux, La Rochelle and the bridges
Fly into Bordeaux-Mérignac for Arcachon Bay and the lakes. Arcachon is about 55 km (34 miles) south-west of Bordeaux, with TER trains every day, and Lacanau is about 42 km (26 miles) north-west.
La Rochelle has its own airport, La Rochelle-Île de Ré, with Nantes about 137 km and Bordeaux-Mérignac about 191 km away, and trains to Bordeaux, Nantes, Poitiers and Paris. The Ré bridge is 2,926.5 m long, the Oléron bridge 2,862 m. The Gironde ferry from Le Verdon-sur-Mer, at the tip of the Médoc, crosses to Royan in 20 to 25 minutes, so Hourtin-Carcans and La Palmyre fit in one trip.
Past the Loire the coast continues on the Brittany eFoil spots page, and the beginner board guide covers what to ride once the first hour is behind you.
