Wing foil Lake Garda

The morning Pelèr and the afternoon Ora at Torbole, Riva and Malcesine, where a wing may launch, and what lessons cost in euros

Last updated:

A lake that makes its own wind

On a fine day at Torbole the air moves along the lake from the north in the morning and from the south in the afternoon. The water up here narrows to 2.25 km between high, steep shores, and that channel is what makes the wind. Further south the lake opens into a wide basin: Garda is 51.5 km long and covers 370 km², the largest lake in Italy.

Who sets the rules depends on where you stand. Riva and Torbole belong to Trentino, the east shore from Malcesine to Peschiera to Veneto, the west from Limone to Sirmione to Lombardy, and for a wing that shapes how a session starts. At the north end you walk in from the beach. On the Veneto shore wings must stay 300 m off the coast in the summer bathing season, which is why the Malcesine schools start from a boat. On the Lombard side each comune sets the width of its own bathing strip.

Trentino also bans motor navigation on its part of the lake, and its 2026 determination names electric foils outright. Where an electric board can run is on our eFoil Lake Garda page.

The wind clock at Torbole and Riva

Both winds are thermal, and on fair days they keep a timetable. The Pelèr comes down from the north. It usually starts between 2 and 3 a.m., blows first in the upper and middle lake and dies around noon, at up to 13 m/s (about 25 knots). Around noon the wind turns. The Ora then comes up from the south and blows until sunset at over 10 m/s (about 20 knots), strongest at the north end and in high summer, very weak in winter, and weaker the further south you go.

Surf Segnana and Sailing Du Lac teach a slot in each wind, while DPC and WWWind Square time lessons by the forecast and the wind on the water. On the west shore, Planet Allsports says Capo Reamol gets the best and steadiest north wind and a reliable Ora after lunch.

The winds that break the pattern

The Balinot is a fall wind from the north west, dropping off the Ballino Pass through Riva after a big fall in temperature from a thunderstorm or snow up high, and it can top 20 m/s. The Ponalot blows hard out of the Ledro Valley in summer, mainly mornings and evenings. The Vinessa brings two or three days of south easterly, usually after bad weather on the Adriatic.

When a thunderstorm builds, get off the water early. Meteotrentino publishes a wind forecast for the Alto Garda ↗ twice a day, and Duotone Pro Center keeps a live webcam ↗ at Torbole.

Where a wing may launch, shore by shore

Riva and Torbole run on a 60 m rule. From 15 May to 10 October, Trentino's Determinazione no. 3976 of 21 April 2026 keeps boards 60 m from beaches and swimmers, except for a slow launch and landing on a line as square to the shore as you can hold (point 3). Riding is allowed from dawn to sunset with a start from land (points 1 and 6). Jumps and freestyle are banned within 200 m of the shore (point 4), and ferries get at least 100 m (point 2).

Beginners may start in open water from the motorboat of an authorized school or club, which holds a yearly permit and stays out to help, and a beginner on a lift must be able to name that club (points 7 to 12). Segnana's €20 lift and Pier's lift fit this rule, as we understand it.

Our summary. Bathing season 1 May to 30 September by default on the Veneto and Lombard shores.

From Malcesine south, the 300 m line and the 100 m bathing zone push a summer start out onto open water, which is why, as we see it, the schools there work from boats and lifts. The 2009 Lombard law speaks only of sailboards, and that a wing counts as one is also our reading. Salò, in the south west, closes its inner gulf to wing foils in summer by mayoral order, so check the current order before you rig there.

Kiters at Torbole go by boat beyond the kite barrier, and from 1 March to 9 October only in set zones and hours (our kitefoil guide covers the sport). A wing rider who can start alone needs no boat there and walks in from the beach at any hour between dawn and sunset.

The emergency numbers on the lake are 112, 118 for an ambulance and 1530, the free Coast Guard line. This section condenses the texts named; it is our summary and no substitute for legal advice.

Wing foil schools in Torbole and Riva

The Garda Trentino tourist board lists three wing foil specialists: Surf Segnana and Vasco Renna in Torbole, Pier Watersports Center in Riva. Duotone Pro Center makes four.

Surf Segnana and Sailing Du Lac

One company with one wing program: Segnana at the Foci del Sarca in Torbole, Du Lac on viale Rovereto in Riva. Lessons run in a morning slot with the north wind and an early afternoon slot with the south wind, with gear, life jacket and wetsuit included. Rental is aimed at people who have already tried the sport.

Vasco Renna

In the Parco della Pavese, Vasco Renna splits wing foil into five levels and takes complete beginners. Courses run in Italian, German and English, and all students carry third party cover.

Duotone Pro Center

On Conca d'Oro beach, DPC is the official Duotone Wing Foil Test Center for the north end. Its instructors teach in six languages, English among them, and keep radio contact with a rescue boat that is always out. The group wing foil course expects you to go upwind on a kite or windsurf board already, which points complete newcomers to wing surf lessons or a private lesson. The water is very deep, and DPC wants every client to swim well.

Pier Watersports Center

At Località Gola in Riva, Pier includes equipment and motorboat assistance in every lesson and the lift in its start and beginner lessons, uses new RRD gear and teaches from age five.

Malcesine, Brenzone and the west shore

Malcesine, on the Veneto shore, has the second cluster of wing schools. LakeRiders teaches to VDWS and IWO levels on a four day plan: a big board without a foil on day one (riders with water sports experience can skip it), a wakefoil session behind the boat on day two, wing foiling by day four. With no wind, students get wakeboarding or wakefoiling, a new date or a transferable voucher.

WWWind Square on the Via Gardesana teaches in German, Italian or English with radio coaching and RRD gear, everything from wetsuit to equipment insurance in the price. On a wrong wind day the boat runs to other spots or the lesson becomes towed foil training. The school advises newcomers to book at least five days.

Windsurfing Campagnola teaches in German and English in three steps, from wing surfing without a foil to wing foiling with a radio helmet, and Stickl Sportcamp in Val di Sogno sells wing foil for beginners. Further south, Beekite at Castelletto di Brenzone says its spot has shallow standing water.

Lake Garda from above Malcesine, the castle and old town below and the ridge of the far shore across the water

Across the lake, Planet Allsports works from Capo Reamol near Limone. Its course includes at least one session with the boat and a pole rig, and instructors talk to students through a Bluetooth headset on the helmet.

Campione del Garda has three operators. Reunion Kite Academy teaches wing from age 12 in Italian, English and Portuguese and asks for a non competitive medical certificate no older than six months, with a form for your own doctor. Gardakitesurf times its starts by the local forecast, charges €20 a year for insurance and membership, and warns that the lake bed is boulders and rock. Campione Univela also teaches wing and offers a lift service.

What a lesson, a rental and a lift cost

Three Torbole schools charge €109 for a first two hour group lesson. Malcesine spreads wider, from €80 for wing surfing without a foil at Campagnola to €179 for a trio test session with LakeRiders.

Longer courses bring the hourly rate down. Four group lessons cost €389 at Segnana and at Vasco Renna (five lessons €479 there), DPC sells three two hour sessions for €299, and Reunion's full course of four hours is €420.

Renting a set and buying a lift

Rental is for riders who can get going on their own. Segnana asks for ID and card details as a deposit, DPC for valid ID. A lift is the boat ride out to open water and back. On Trentino water it is, as far as we can tell, the legal way past the beach strip for anyone who cannot yet start alone.

Beginners, riders and children

Complete newcomers start without the foil. DPC does it with wing surf lessons, Campagnola at its level 0 to 1, LakeRiders on day one of its plan. After that the boat carries much of the load, through Trentino's lift rule at the north end, the lift in Pier's start lessons and the boats of the Malcesine schools. How a first course usually runs is in our guide to wing foil lessons.

A rider who already flies can rent at Segnana and Du Lac, DPC or Pier, or with a lift at LakeRiders and Gardakitesurf. For your own kit, board, wing and foil sizes are in our wing foil gear guide.

Illustration, not Lake Garda: a wing foiler holds a black wing overhead on a white board on the sea, a buoy nearby

Pier teaches from age five, Reunion from twelve, and LakeRiders and Beekite need written parental consent for minors. Duotone holds a free youth camp for ages 7 to 17 at the Pro Center in Torbole.

The season, the water and what changes in autumn

DPC is open from March to November and names April to October as the best months for water, air and the steadiest wind. Surf Segnana teaches from early May to the start of November, Sailing Du Lac from May to late October, Gardakitesurf from April to October.

The water sits around 20 °C (68 °F) from June to August, a little warmer in the south, and reaches 25 or 26 °C only in the hottest summers. APPA Trento runs a live water temperature probe ↗ off Riva, about 100 m out between Punta Lido and Sabbioni beach at 1 m depth. DPC recommends a 4/3 wetsuit in spring and autumn and a shorty or just a swimsuit on warm summer days.

Autumn also changes the rules. The Veneto and Lombard bathing season runs from 1 May to 30 September by default, the Veneto safety rules from 15 May to 15 October, and Trentino's 60 m strip from 15 May to 10 October. In September the schools are open and the summer limits still apply. By late October the strips have ended, but some schools have closed. No month comes with a wind guarantee.

Getting to Torbole with a board

With a board bag the car is the easy answer: the A22 toll motorway (Brenner to Modena) to the Rovereto Sud/Lago di Garda Nord exit, then the SS240 for about 17 km to Riva. Affi/Lago di Garda Sud is the exit for Garda, Bardolino, Lazise and Malcesine.

Flying in, you land at Verona or Milan Bergamo. The Aerobus from Verona ends at Porta Nuova station, where a bus leaves for Garda, Torbole and Riva; the other way round is a train to Rovereto and the Trentino Trasporti bus for the 17 km down to Riva. Buy the bus ticket before you board, none are sold on the bus.

The lake ferries take a board as special baggage for €9.60 (Navigazione Laghi list price), space allowing and at the captain's discretion, but hydrofoils and catamarans take no accompanied baggage over 0.60 m. A UK passport gets you up to 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area; the GOV.UK entry page for Italy ↗ has the passport validity rules. Frequently asked questions

I have never held a wing. Can I start on Lake Garda?

Yes, through a school. Fine days bring a north wind in the morning and a south wind in the afternoon, and Trentino lets beginners start in open water from a school's motorboat.

What is the best time to wing foil Lake Garda?

April to October, the months Duotone Pro Center in Torbole names for the best water, air and steadiest wind. The afternoon Ora blows hardest in high summer.

What does a first wing foil lesson cost on Lake Garda?

A first two hour group lesson costs €109 at Surf Segnana, Vasco Renna and Duotone Pro Center in Torbole. Elsewhere on the lake first sessions run from €80 for wing surfing without a foil at Campagnola in Malcesine to €250 for Reunion's intro course in Campione.

Which Torbole wing foil schools teach in English?

Duotone Pro Center and Vasco Renna both name English. Pier in Riva says its instructors are multilingual.

Where does a rider who can already fly rent a set at Torbole?

At Surf Segnana or Duotone Pro Center, both for €59 an hour and both against ID. Rental is for riders who can get going on their own.

Is third party insurance compulsory for wing foiling on Lake Garda?

On the Veneto shore, from Malcesine to Peschiera, yes. Ordinanza 55 of 17 March 2025 (art. 2) allows wing foiling only with third party liability insurance. Some schools put cover in the price: Vasco Renna insures all its students, Reunion includes third party insurance, and Gardakitesurf charges €20 a year for insurance and membership. A UK GHIC or EHIC does not replace travel insurance, so check that the policy covers water sports.
