Who runs eFoil sessions around Punta Cana and Bávaro

Bávaro is an area of Punta Cana in La Altagracia, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic, and its shore is one all-inclusive resort after another. The resort water sports list is where you would naturally look for a board. Royalton Bávaro and Royalton CHIC Punta Cana offer kayaks, snorkeling and catamaran trips, and no eFoil.

We found two full eFoil offers within reach of a Bávaro hotel. Kite Surf Punta Cana teaches on the sea at Pearl Beach Club in Cabeza de Toro, a taxi ride from the main resort strip. Island Adv Riders teaches one to one on a lake in a residential neighborhood of Punta Cana, and it offers to bring the class to your own beach.

Two more schools teach on other coasts of the country, in Las Terrenas on the Samaná peninsula and in Cabarete on the north coast. In our reading both are too far for a day out from a Bávaro resort.

Kite Surf Punta Cana at Pearl Beach Club

Kite Surf Punta Cana and Efoil Punta Cana are one school under two names, with a website for each, and both send you to Pearl Beach Club in Cabeza de Toro. The booking pages give the address as Higüey, the municipality the beach belongs to.

It is a kite school first. The same team teaches kitesurfing and wing foil from the club, and its site runs in English, Spanish, German, French and Russian. At Pearl Beach Club the trade wind blows hardest from sunrise until about 11:00, and kite students are told to start at 8:00 to catch it. The eFoil is what the school offers when there is not enough wind for a kite, and its own pages call the board “Perfect for no-wind days and completely beginner-friendly”. Sessions are booked ahead, never on the spot.

The school describes its beach as flat, waist to chest deep water inside a reef-protected lagoon, open and regulated for kitesurfing.

The beginner course and the rental

The beginner private course lasts 1.5 hours and costs $290. It starts on land with board handling, the speed settings, the safety gear and how to read your surroundings. On the water you work up from lying on the board to kneeling, then standing and riding, and the course ends with first flights on the foil. All programs run on Duotone equipment with safety gear, and the teaching is one instructor to one student.

The 45 minute rental costs $150 with board, helmet and life jacket included. The school aims it at intermediate and experienced riders, though the same page lists instruction for beginners. The course, as we read it, is the product built for a first time on a board.

Efoil Punta Cana, the second site, shows different figures: $299 for the course and $150 for a 30 minute rental. The prices quoted here are Kite Surf Punta Cana's, so check which of the two sites your booking calendar sits on before you pay. Efoil Punta Cana also lists private Advance Training, with no published price or length.

Island Adv Riders, on a lake or at your beach

Island Adv Riders teaches its eFoil classes on a lake in a residential neighborhood of Punta Cana, or comes to the guest's beach instead. You arrange it over WhatsApp. Each class is private.

Discovery, the first step, runs 75 minutes for $260 per person. It opens with the equipment, body position and the throttle, then goes onto the water with a flat water entry, riding prone, riding on the knees and finally standing. Flight belongs to the next program. Avid takes four hours spread over two to three days, costs $860 and covers lift-offs, sustained flight, and turning and carving in flight.

Equipment, safety equipment and regional taxes are in the price. You bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap, a change of clothes, water and snacks.

The two Punta Cana schools, as we see it, put you on different water. Pearl Beach Club is the sea inside the reef lagoon the school describes, used on the days the wind drops. The lake class starts from a flat water entry, and since sargassum drifts on the sea and does not reach an inland lake, a lake session never depends on it.

By the hour the two first sessions come out close, about $195 at Pearl Beach Club and about $210 for the Discovery class. What you get differs more. The course ends with first flights on the foil and needs a taxi there and back. Discovery stops at standing, and it can take place on your hotel beach if the resort agrees.

Booking through the resort or straight with a school

No eFoil operator we found works out of a resort water sports desk, so the booking goes to a school. Booking Kite Surf Punta Cana direct gets you its published list price and its own calendar. Kite Surf Punta Cana and Efoil Punta Cana both take bookings through an online calendar; Island Adv Riders, Estilo de Vida and Liquid Blue answer on WhatsApp.

The resort still has a say when the class comes to you. Island Adv Riders is the only operator we found that offers to teach at the guest's beach. Before you book that version, we would ask the resort whether an outside school may launch a motorized board from its beach.

Which session for which holiday

  • First time on a board, happy to take a taxi: the Pearl Beach Club course, 20 to 45 minutes by car from the resorts the school names.
  • First time, staying at the hotel: Island Adv Riders' Discovery class at your beach once the resort agrees, or on the lake.
  • Ridden an eFoil before: the 45 minute rental at Pearl Beach Club.
  • Learning to fly in a structured way: Island Adv Riders' Avid program over two to three days, or Efoil Punta Cana's Advance Training; on the north coast, Liquid Blue's packages.
  • Sargassum on your stretch of beach: the lake class, which as we read it the seaweed cannot reach.

Bávaro beaches, kite zones and seaweed

We found no permanent rule written for eFoils on the Dominican coast. At sea the school's own rules set where you ride, so the school picks the water. For one that means Pearl Beach Club, for the other a lake or a beach agreed with your hotel.

Kite Surf Punta Cana says kiting is restricted in many parts of Bávaro, Los Corales among them, which is kept for swimming and boat traffic, and that its own center sits at a regulated kiting spot. The statement is about kites. It sets no rule for eFoils.

The other thing that picks a beach for you is seaweed. A Cabeza de Toro dive center, Grand Bay of the Sea, names Bávaro Beach and Arena Gorda as the worst hit by sargassum, with El Cortecito and Cabeza de Toro also heavy in the peak months. Juanillo in Cap Cana is shielded by a reef. The resorts clean their sand early in the morning, and some lay booms across the water to keep the weed off.

Resolución 0050/2023: daytime hours on lakes and lagoons

The rule we found that touches an eFoil class around Punta Cana concerns fresh water. Resolución núm. 0050/2023 of the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, dated 13 December 2023, restricts recreational use of rivers and inland bodies of water, naming rivers, lakes, lagoons and reservoirs. It does not cover the sea.

Article 6 sets the hours. Recreational use is allowed from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in spring and summer and from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in autumn and winter, and the Ministry may allow other hours when a municipality or a governorship asks for them. Under the párrafo of Article 2, any use around the 30 meter protection strip of a river, lake, lagoon or reservoir needs the Ministry's authorization. Article 1 bans leaving objects foreign to the natural surroundings there, and names motor vehicles and floating devices among them.

As we read it, on a lake the daytime hours of Article 6 apply. The resolution does not say whether it reaches a lake inside a private development, and Island Adv Riders' lake is in a residential neighborhood. If it does apply, a class booked late in the day ends by 7:00 p.m. in spring and summer and by 6:00 p.m. in autumn and winter.

This reading of the resolution is ours, and none of it is legal advice.

Trade winds, sargassum and sea temperature through the year

At Punta Cana the sea is around 26 °C in late winter and climbs to about 29 °C in September and October. The trade wind matters less than it does for a kite, since at Pearl Beach Club the eFoil is the session for the days it is too light to kite.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic lasts from 1 June to 30 November. It peaks around 10 September, with the busiest weeks from mid-August to mid-October. An average season (1991 to 2020) brings 14 named storms, of which 7 become hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

Sargassum keeps its own calendar, and the dive center stresses that the timing varies by year. The regional outlooks cover the Caribbean, not a single beach. Nobody can promise a clean week in advance.

Put the three together and, as we read them, the year splits in two. December to March lies outside the hurricane season and in the low sargassum months, with the coolest water of the year at about 26 to 28 °C. May to October has the warmest sea and overlaps both the sargassum peak and the hurricane season. A winter week gives up a degree or two of water temperature for beaches with little weed. A summer week does the reverse. On the lake, seaweed is out of the question in any month.

Las Terrenas and Cabarete, for a stay on another coast

We would treat both as a separate trip from Punta Cana. They suit a guest staying on the Samaná peninsula or the north coast, and neither is a day out from a Bávaro resort.

Estilo de Vida in Las Terrenas teaches on Waydoo boards in the bay of Punta Popy or at Cosón. The kit is the eFoil, a helmet, a life vest, knee pads, a lycra and a radio helmet, and the instructor follows on a second eFoil.

Liquid Blue in Cabarete teaches with Foil Drive, a compact electric assist mounted on a foil board, which is a foil assist and not a complete eFoil board. The First Timer lesson includes coach and gear, and the packages spread the learning over two to three or four to five days. Lessons run in Cabarete Bay, Sosúa Bay or on the La Boca River, whichever suits the day's conditions.

Solo rental at Liquid Blue needs earlier Foil Drive experience, and a helmet, an impact vest and knee guards are compulsory. The school goes out on calm mornings with light or no wind, on days with no wind at all, and late in the afternoon when conditions allow. You will not need a wetsuit in most conditions, the school says. The sea on the north coast runs from about 26 °C in February and March to about 28.5 °C in September and October.

Getting to Pearl Beach Club, and your own board

There is no hotel pickup from Kite Surf Punta Cana and no transfer to buy; the school's advice is a taxi, and it has drivers it can recommend. The drive takes about 18 to 20 minutes from Club Med, about 25 minutes by taxi from Hard Rock Hotel and about 45 minutes from Ocean El Faro at Uvero Alto. Add the ride both ways to the 1.5 hours of the course when you plan the day around a resort lunch or a flight home.

Island Adv Riders comes to you instead, once the hotel has agreed. For the lake class, you sort out the details with the school on WhatsApp.

A rider who owns a board and wants to bring it should start with the airline. Our eFoil battery guide sets out the airline limit on lithium packs. Foil Drive owners heading to the north coast can rent a battery alone from Liquid Blue for $80 a day.

Aruba, Puerto Rico, Grand Cayman and Providenciales are compared in our Caribbean eFoil guide, and the Mexican side of the sea in the Cancún guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book an eFoil session at my Punta Cana resort?

Not through the water sports desk. None of the eFoil operators we found works as a resort desk, and the activity lists of Royalton Bávaro and Royalton CHIC Punta Cana stop at kayaks, snorkeling and catamaran trips. You book a school instead. Island Adv Riders will bring its one to one class to your hotel beach, so ask the resort first whether an outside school may launch a board from its sand.

How much does an eFoil lesson cost in Punta Cana?

$290 for the 1.5 hour private course at Pearl Beach Club, $260 for Island Adv Riders' 75 minute class.

Will I fly on my first eFoil lesson in Punta Cana?

At Pearl Beach Club the beginner course ends with first flights on the foil, after lying, kneeling, standing and riding. Island Adv Riders' Discovery class goes as far as standing; lift-offs and sustained flight are taught in its four hour Avid program.

Can I rent an eFoil in Punta Cana without a lesson?

Kite Surf Punta Cana rents boards for 45 minutes at $150, helmet and life jacket included, and aims that rental at intermediate and experienced riders. For a first time on a board, the 1.5 hour course is the one built for it.

Does sargassum stop eFoil sessions in the Dominican Republic?

On a lake, no, in our reading, since the weed floats at sea and never gets inland. On the coast it can. Grand Bay of the Sea, a dive center in Cabeza de Toro, puts the peak from May to August and sees little from November to March, with the timing shifting from year to year.

Is there a hotel pickup for the Pearl Beach Club lessons?

No. The school sells no transfer and advises a taxi, about 20 minutes from Club Med, 25 from Hard Rock Hotel and 45 from Ocean El Faro at Uvero Alto. It can recommend a driver.

Are there rules for riding an eFoil at sea in the Dominican Republic?

On fresh water, yes: Resolución 0050/2023 of the Ministry of Environment limits recreational use of lakes, rivers and lagoons to daytime hours. We found no permanent rule written for eFoils at sea, so on the sea the school's own rules decide where and how you ride.
