Valencia

The city beaches are for swimming. The boards start 80 km south, with an instructor and a support boat at Oliva, and with hourly rental for trained riders in Dénia.

Valencia eFoil rental starts in Oliva and Dénia

Valencia has some 20 km of beach between La Malva-rosa and El Perellonet, a historic harbor basin and a lagoon inside a natural park. No school runs eFoil sessions from any of them. For a session you go further down the coast.

The nearest boards fly at Oliva, still in the province of Valencia and about 80 km from the city center by road. Oliva Surf runs every session there with an instructor and a support boat. Some 25 km further south, across the río Racons and into the province of Alicante, two operators in Dénia teach the eFoil and also rent it out by the hour to riders who already know how to fly it.

In town you will find wing foil courses in the port and jet skis for hire at the Marina Real. Neither is an eFoil; for the wing, the wingfoil guide covers the sport and its gear.

First-timers can book in either town. A trained rider who wants the remote alone for an hour heads to Dénia, because Oliva lists no rental without an instructor.

Eight city beaches, a Marina and a lake, none of them an eFoil launch

València's beach ordinance names eight beaches. North of the port lie the two urban ones, La Malva-rosa (1,000 m) and El Cabanyal (1,200 m), used all year round. South of it the beaches sit inside the Parque Natural de l'Albufera and are specially protected: Pinedo (1,500 m), L'Arbre del Gos (2,430 m), El Saler (2,700 m), La Garrofera (1,500 m), the wild beach of La Devesa (2,000 m) and Recatí-Perellonet (3,500 m). From June to mid September the city beaches have lifeguards and buoyed bathing zones.

What the city ordinance allows

The ordinance was approved on 30 April 2010 and amended on 31 March 2016. Its article 46.1 keeps every motor and sail craft out of the buoyed bathing zones. Launching and landing happen only through signed, authorized channels, and only official, cleaning, patrol and rescue craft are exempt. Article 46.2 sets 3 knots as the limit in the strip 200 m off the beaches (50 m off the rest of the coast) on the way to open water. Under article 46.3 the city may set launch zones or nautical zones that motor and sail craft must use, and may mark a channel for sail only. Article 47 bans leaving boards or craft on the sand outside the signed zones.

In season the city usually buoys nautical channels at La Malva-rosa, El Cabanyal, Pinedo and El Perellonet, used for surf, windsurf, paddle, canoe and kite. In our reading, a rider with a private eFoil could start only from a marked launch zone or from a channel that is not reserved for sail. The beach signs on the day settle which one that is.

The Marina de València and the port

The Marina de València, the historic harbor basin between Las Arenas beach and the port, hosted the America's Cup in 2007 and 2010. The state decree on fast motor craft bans them inside ports and marinas, which, as we read it, rules out an eFoil in the Marina or the port.

L'Albufera

The lagoon south of the city has been a natural park since Decreto 89/1986. Its ordinance, approved on 25 October 2002 and amended on 28 January 2005, lets only registered boats of traditional type navigate (art. 2). Kayaks, canoes, sailboards and pedal boats stay off unless a sports club obtains a discretionary permit, and the text bans combustion engines (art. 5.3) and outboard motors (art. 12.11). By our reading, that means no eFoil on the lake.

Oliva Surf: an instructor and a support boat on every session

Oliva Surf works from Passeig Francisco Brines 92, at the Apartotel Playa Oliva, and rides the beach in front of it. You book by WhatsApp, and the school keeps an English page. Oliva lies at the southern end of the Gandía maritime district and of the province of Valencia; a little further south, the río Racons marks where Alicante begins.

Every session opens with a briefing on the sand. On the water you get an instructor, a life jacket, a helmet and a support boat. The 30 minutes of a session are net water time, counted after that briefing. The boards carry a 3 kW electric motor controlled with a hand remote and fly at 10 to 40 km/h. Beginners stay at minimum speed on large, stable wings, and in the school's own words, “most of our students stand up within minutes”.

Each rider signs a liability waiver before the first session, with a parent's or guardian's written consent for anyone who is not an adult. When you write, ask about a minimum age, a wetsuit, what happens when wind or waves stop a session, and above all about dates outside summer.

Dénia, where trained riders can rent the board by the hour

More than 20 km of shoreline belong to Dénia. Northward the sandy beaches run through Les Marines to Les Deveses, almost 3 km long; southward the rocky coves of Les Rotes lie over posidonia meadows. Neither operator names a fixed eFoil beach, and you learn the meeting point when you book.

Kite45º and eFoilSpain

Kite45º, at Calle Riu Vinalopo 1A, is a kitesurf and wing foil school that also teaches eFoil. All lessons and rentals sold under the eFoilSpain name in Dénia are run by Kite45º, so the two are one operator. You must be able to swim, and beginners start with an instructor-led lesson. Helmet and impact vest come with it, the school checks the water before each session, and unsuitable weather moves you to another date.

Rental goes to independent riders, or after more than three hours of lessons, depending on weather and water and with the instructor's approval.

E-Foil Costa Blanca comes to your beach

E-Foil Costa Blanca keeps no fixed base. The gear comes to the beach or the place where you are staying, in Dénia, Jávea/Xàbia, Calpe, Altea, Benidorm and El Campello, mostly between Dénia and Calpe, and the exact spot is confirmed when you book. A standard session lasts 60 to 90 minutes.

Kite45º lists a private lesson at €69 for 30 minutes and €119 for an hour, and rental at €99 an hour or €280 for three. E-Foil Costa Blanca asks €120 for a private course and €130 for an hour of rental, with blocks from 20 minutes (€80) to 8 hours (€500). The longer drive does not buy a cheaper pair lesson. Kite45º's semi-private hour at €99 each costs more than Oliva's pair hour at about €85 each. Only E-Foil Costa Blanca's €80 per person comes in lower; ask how long that course runs. For a solo rider who wants no instructor, Dénia is the only choice on this coast.

Les Deveses, where three borders meet

At the río Racons the province changes from Valencia to Alicante and the maritime district from Gandía to Dénia, and Oliva's Les Deveses beach runs into Dénia's beach of that name. On the Oliva side it is 700 m of fine golden sand, 100 m wide, with a dune line, lifeguards and no promenade or dedicated parking, known for sailing sports in the Garbí breeze. No operator names either half as an eFoil spot. Oliva Surf works on the Valencia side of the river, Kite45º and E-Foil Costa Blanca on the Dénia side.

The sea itself hardly separates the two towns. Valencia averages 13 to 14 °C in February and Alicante, the nearest reference for Dénia, about 14 °C. Both sit near 27 °C in August and 23 °C in October. The tidal range is small. Peninsular Spain measures its altitudes from mean sea level at Alicante, a choice made partly for that low range.

Wind is where they part. Off Valencia and Oliva it is mostly light, windier mainly in winter. Dénia stays below 4 Beaufort most of the time, gets stronger wind more often from January to March than in September and October, and its usual directions, WSW, SW and W, blow offshore there, as we see it. At Oliva the support boat stays with you on every ride.

Spanish rules for an eFoil off Valencia: channels, license and age

Oliva lies in the Gandía maritime district, the city and El Saler in the Valencia district, both under the Capitanía Marítima de Valencia, and Dénia under Alicante (Real Decreto 638/2007). All of it falls under the state rules, though the Capitán Marítimo can alter periods or zones and can halt riding for a while. No Spanish legal text says eFoil. The category that fits is “tablas deslizantes con motor”, motorized gliding boards.

No plate and no license

Under Real Decreto 1435/2010 of 5 November 2010, art. 2 q) v) puts “tablas deslizantes con motor” in the class of floating or beach craft, and art. 3.2 excludes that class from registration, which we read as meaning an eFoil carries no plate. Since 1 October 2026, Real Decreto 875/2014 of 10 October 2014, art. 10, as worded by art. 4.1 of Real Decreto 1188/2025 of 26 December 2025, asks for no license for floating or beach craft that stay within 2 nautical miles of the port, marina or beach you left, in daylight only (10.1 c). Jet skis are the exception (10.2), and the rider must be 18 (10.3), as the original text already required. The 2025 decree does bring a license for renting small motorboats of up to 5 m and 15 CV; in our reading that concerns those boats, and an eFoil stays license-free.

Speed craft rules and gear

Real Decreto 1043/2003 of 1 August 2003 covers motorized craft other than jet skis that can pass 10 knots (art. 2). Oliva Surf's boards reach 40 km/h, about 21 knots, so we take the decree to apply. Article 5 asks for an automatic engine cut-off, a life jacket of at least 100 N with a whistle, a helmet that floats and protective goggles; Oliva Surf names vest and helmet, not goggles. Article 4 requires liability insurance for private use and accident insurance for rental craft, and article 3 sets 18, or 16 with written consent of parents or guardians. Neither decree settles an instructor-led lesson for a minor, so far as we read them. Article 6 adds the beach rules:

  • no riding inside buoyed bathing zones; in and out through buoyed channels at 3 knots or less;
  • where nothing is buoyed, the 200 m strip only to launch or land, straight out, at 3 knots at most;
  • no riding in ports and marinas, or within 50 m of other craft;
  • from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset, in good visibility and good weather, always visible from land.

Real Decreto 876/2014, the Costas regulation, closes buoyed bathing zones to sail and motor craft (art. 73.1) and treats unbuoyed water 200 m off beaches and 50 m off the rest of the coast as a bathing zone, with a 3 knot limit (art. 73.2). Breaking those limits is a “grave” infringement under art. 307.2 l) of Real Decreto Legislativo 2/2011 of 5 September 2011. This summary helps you plan a session; it is not legal advice. The whole country is covered on the eFoil in Spain page.

Valencia sea temperature and wind, month by month

No operator publishes a season, and they sell the eFoil as needing neither wind nor waves, so the calendar turns on water temperature and crowds.

July and August bring water of 26 to 27 °C, full beaches and buoyed bathing zones, so every start goes through a channel. May, June, September and October keep the sea at about 19 to 26 °C with mostly light wind; those strike us as the better months for a first session. In winter the water is near 14 °C and a wetsuit is needed.

AEMET's 1981 to 2010 normals for València give an average daily high of 16.4 °C in January, 30.2 °C in August and 24.3 °C in October. July averages 1.1 rainy days, September and October 5.0 each; October is the wettest month (77 mm of 475 mm a year), and the year brings 2,696 hours of sunshine.

An eFoil day trip from Valencia to Oliva or Dénia

By road Oliva beach is about 80 km from the center and 90 km from the airport; Dénia is about 105 km away. From the airport, Metrovalencia lines 3 and 5 run into town.

For anyone without a car, the Cercanías C-1 runs from Valencia-Nord to Gandía. No line reaches Oliva or Dénia, so the last stretch is by road, about 9 km from Gandía station to Oliva beach.

Before you go

  • Book a 30 or 60 minute session at Oliva Surf by WhatsApp ahead of the day.
  • Expect to sign the liability waiver on arrival; a rider who is not an adult needs a parent's or guardian's written consent.
  • Pack swimwear, a towel and sun cream, and ask about a wetsuit outside summer.
  • Drive on to Dénia, about 25 km further, if you already fly and want a rental board without an instructor.

The rest of the coast south of Dénia, from Jávea/Xàbia to Torrevieja, is on the Costa Blanca eFoil page, and the eFoil price guide puts these session prices beside what a board would cost to buy. Ferries from Valencia take a little over 6 hours to Ibiza and 7.5 to 8.5 hours to Palma, for the schools on Ibiza and Mallorca.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent an eFoil in Valencia city?

No. None of the eight city beaches has an eFoil school, and the Marina and the port are closed to the board. The nearest sessions are at Oliva, about 80 km south.

What does an eFoil lesson near Valencia cost?

At Oliva Surf, €65 for 30 minutes on the water and €95 for an hour, VAT included. In Dénia, Kite45º lists €69 for a private half hour and €119 for an hour, and E-Foil Costa Blanca €120 for a private course.

Where can I rent an eFoil on my own near Valencia?

In Dénia. Kite45º rents at €99 an hour to independent riders or after more than three hours of lessons, with the instructor's approval, and E-Foil Costa Blanca lists €130 an hour. Oliva Surf only runs sessions with an instructor.

Do I need a boat license for an eFoil in Valencia?

No. Spain's license rules for small craft leave floating and beach craft out, provided you ride in daylight, no more than 2 nautical miles from where you set off, and are 18 or older. The board needs no registration plate either.

Can I launch my own eFoil from Malvarrosa or El Saler?

In our reading, only from a marked launch zone or a channel that is not sail-only, never through a buoyed bathing area, and at 3 knots at most inside the 200 m strip. The beach signs show which channel is open to you.

Is the sea warm enough for an eFoil in October?

Usually, yes. The sea averages about 23 °C, the wind is mostly light, and the lifeguards and buoyed bathing zones of summer stop in mid September.

Can a 16 year old take an eFoil lesson near Valencia?

Ask the school first. One decree sets 18, or 16 with written parental consent, the other 18, and we do not read either as settling an instructor-led lesson for a minor. Oliva Surf publishes no minimum age.
