eFoil Sicily

One school at Mondello on the Palermo side, two on the Taormina coast, a resort centre near Sciacca, and two coast guard districts with very different rules

Sicily's eFoil bases at Mondello, Taormina and Sciacca

Sicily has a long coastline and only a handful of places to ride an eFoil. Two areas have a school on the beach. Mondello, Palermo's seaside district on the Tyrrhenian side, has Water Experience. Below Taormina on the Ionian side, Foil Taormina works from Mazzarò and Sicily Jet Surfing sells hours on the same coast. The third option is Sealosophy's watersport centre at Rocco Forte Verdura Resort near Sciacca, on the south coast.

Elsewhere the boards come by boat. Water Experience delivers Lift eFoils with an instructor to yachts, hotels and villas from Cefalù to Trapani, the Egadi islands and Ortigia, prices on request. The two beach areas also fall under different coast guard districts, Palermo and Messina, and their rules differ far more than the seas do.

Staying in Palermo or in Taormina: which coast suits you

From Palermo you get one school and a simple product, a single hour at Mondello with an instructor, for one or two people, booked on an English page. Water Experience publishes no course ladder beyond that hour. The limits are on the water, with a 300 m bathing zone in summer and the Capo Gallo marine reserve beyond Monte Gallo, the mountain that closes the bay to the north west.

Taormina has two schools that work very differently. Foil Taormina runs a two stage course on Fliteboards and rents only to riders who finish both stages, while Sicily Jet Surfing sells Lift and Waydoo boards by the hour. A single taste of flying is simplest to arrange at Mondello. Taormina has the structure for a week that ends with you riding alone, at a higher price.

Mondello: an English booking page on Palermo's beach

Mondello curves for about 1.5 km of sand between Monte Pellegrino to the south east and Monte Gallo to the north west. Both ends turn to rock, and parts of the bay lie inside two nature reserves. It is a district of Palermo itself.

Water Experience meets its riders at Viale Regina Elena 2. The hour opens on land with a briefing on gear, safety, posture and board handling, then the instructor guides you step by step on the water. The school recommends a weight under 100 kg, asks for good swimming ability, and lets the weather, the sea and the staff's judgment decide whether a session goes ahead.

Mondello stands apart on language. The site switches between Italian, English and French, and the session page with its calendar is in English. Cancel up to 72 hours before and it costs nothing; after that, there is no refund. The company also sells and supports Lift boards.

The Taormina coast, from Mazzarò to Giardini Naxos

Mazzarò lies below the town and belongs to Taormina. Foil Taormina has its base there at Via Nazionale 149 and calls Mazzarò bay “elegant and sheltered”. A cable car run by Asm links the town with Mazzarò and Isola Bella.

Foil Taormina teaches in two stages

Fase Uno, the beginner course, needs no experience. You fly on your knees first and stand up for take-offs when the conditions allow it, on a Fliteboard with all the gear supplied and a qualified instructor in every session. It costs €200, and by the school's account many people fly in their first session.

Fase Due costs €250 and assumes you already hold a straight line. It tightens your turns, works on speed and power, and moves you onto PRO boards with other wing and stabilizer combinations. Finishing it opens the excursions and independent rental.

Rental then comes with a test. Fly three minutes without touching the water, then a figure of eight with five touchdowns at most, and a Fliteboard AIR, PRO or ULTRA is yours, alone or with an instructor, collected at Mazzarò or brought out to a boat. Life jacket and helmet are compulsory. Give 48 hours' notice; the rental price is quoted on request.

Excursions start at €300 an hour. A guide is optional, though the school recommends one, and the impact vest and helmet come with the trip and stay on. The routes take in the bay of Giardini Naxos, Capo Taormina, the Grotta degli Innamorati, the Scoglio del Fico, Isola Bella, the Grotta Azzurra, Mazzarò bay and the Baia delle Sirene.

The school's site is in Italian. Mention at booking that you want the course in English.

Sicily Jet Surfing and its hour blocks

Sicily Jet Surfing, the second school here, calls this water the Baia di Taormina. You can learn there, rent, or get help buying an eFoil of your own. Its boards are Lift and Waydoo, sold by the hour or in blocks of four and eight hours, and riders up to 130 kg are accepted.

This site is in Italian as well, and booking runs through a form sent by WhatsApp. The school quotes about an hour and a half of riding per battery, with two hours to recharge.

Isola Bella and the bay of Giardini Naxos

Isola Bella became a monument in 1984 and a nature reserve in 1998, and a Site of Community Importance followed in 2005. Cutgana, at the University of Catania, manages it. The seabed in front is a protected site of its own, Fondali di Taormina, for its Posidonia meadows. The inner zone is closed to riding, so see the islet on an excursion with the school.

Giardini Naxos fills the next bay south, between Capo Taormina and Capo Schisò, where Greek settlers founded Naxos in 734 BC. Foil Taormina calls it a long straight stretch, ideal for steady flight. The Messina coast guard district starts at the Alcantara mouth, at the bay's southern end.

Sciacca and the resort on the south coast

Rocco Forte Verdura Resort spreads over more than 230 hectares on the south coast near Sciacca, within reach of the Valle dei Templi. Sealosophy runs its watersport centre, with a Fliteboard next to the wakeboard, the seabob and the sailing boats.

You do not have to be a guest. Visitors from outside book at least 24 hours ahead, and since no eFoil price is published, ask for one when you write.

How each Sicilian school takes a booking

  • Water Experience, Mondello: the online calendar on its English session page, a date request, or WhatsApp. Free cancellation up to 72 hours before.
  • Foil Taormina, Mazzarò: the booking form on its site, phone or email. Rental at least 48 hours ahead, and only after both courses.
  • Sicily Jet Surfing, Taormina coast: a form sent through WhatsApp, with a deposit at booking.
  • Sealosophy, Verdura Resort: at least 24 hours ahead for anyone who is not staying at the resort.

Check the limits before you pay a deposit. Water Experience recommends staying under 100 kgand Sicily Jet Surfing takes riders up to 130 kg. On the Taormina coast the minimum age is 16, and Foil Taormina asks for a parent's signed consent for minors. Palermo's ordinance gives no eFoil age; the national code's 16 for small craft applies, as we read it.

Flights into Palermo and Catania, and on to the beach

Mondello and Sciacca are Palermo trips. Falcone Borsellino airport lies about 35 km from the city on the A29. Trains leave every day from a station in the terminal basement, and coaches run to Palermo Centrale in about 50 minutes (Prestia e Comandè), Sciacca in about 1 h 50 (Autolinee Gallo) and Agrigento in about 2 h 40 (SAL).

For Taormina, fly into Catania. Interbus runs a direct coach from Catania airport to Taormina, and the Asm cable car takes you from the town down to Mazzarò and Isola Bella.

Leave your own board at home. Lithium batteries over 160 Wh are generally not allowed on passenger aircraft (see our eFoil battery guide), and a ferry carrier should confirm in writing before you bring one by car.

Sea temperature, wind and the months that work

From May to November the gap between Palermo and Taormina is no more than about a degree. Sciacca runs some 2 °C cooler in July and August, and February and March bring about 15 °C everywhere.

Foil Taormina suggests a wetsuit or lycra top for anyone who feels the cold, and does not supply one. An eFoil needs no wind, and Palermo's Villa Scalea station averages 3 knots over the year, gusting 9, mostly from the north-northwest.

No school publishes season dates for the beach, so ask before you book a spring or autumn trip. Summer also changes the rules. Italy's bathing season, set by Decree-Law no. 73 of 21 May 2025 (art. 6, para. 2), runs from the third week of May to the third week of September, and the swimmers' zones follow it. A region may move the start or the end by a week.

Rules at Mondello, set by Palermo's coast guard

Palermo's beach rules sit in Ordinanza di Sicurezza Balneare no. 46/2026 of 29 May 2026, which runs for the national bathing season (art. 1, para. 2). It never mentions the eFoil; the one foil craft it names is the Manta 5 XE1 electric water bike (art. 16).

The bathing zone reaches 300 m from the waterline, or 100 m from cliffs (art. 3, para. 1). From 08:00 to sunset no motor craft may move in it, “even electric”, and only oar and paddle boats stay (art. 3, para. 4a). An eFoil has an electric motor, so in our reading it keeps out of that strip by day.

From 300 m to 1,000 m out (100 to 500 m off cliffs), every craft moves in displacement at no more than 8 knots (art. 3, para. 7). The ordinance leaves open how a foiling board fits that rule, and our reading is to ride only where the school takes you. Launch corridors carry motor craft through the swimmers at 3 knots at most (art. 10, para. 5). Where a beach has no corridor, a motor craft reaches a quiet stretch of shore only under oars, engine off (art. 11, para. 3).

Past Monte Gallo begins the Capo Gallo Isola delle Femmine marine protected area, set up by ministerial decree on 24 July 2002. Ordinance no. 59/2026 of 25 June 2026 (art. 1) bars jet skis “and similar craft” from its water, from launching anywhere on its shore, and from the ports of Isola delle Femmine, Sferracavallo and Fossa del Gallo. Counting an eFoil as similar is our reading. Stay out of the reserve.

Rules at Taormina: Messina wrote a chapter for eFoils

The Messina coast guard, from Giardini Naxos to Messina, gives electric boards and eFoils a chapter of their own, Capo XIX of its regulation, Ordinance no. 28/2024 of 30 April 2024.

  • The rider must be at least 16, wear a buoyancy aid at all times and take a demonstration lesson before riding. The motor has to cut out when the controller touches the water or the board tilts beyond 45° (art. 59, para. 2).
  • Never closer than 300 m to the coast, in the bathing season or out of it, and never beyond one nautical mile (art. 60, para. 1). A specific ordinance may lift the 300 m limit inside a concession area (art. 60, para. 4).
  • No racing and no riding at night. Keep 100 m from other boards, diver flags and fishing gear, 200 m from merchant ships and 500 m from naval ones, and stay out of ports, their mouths and their access routes (art. 60, paras. 1 and 2).
  • In the bathing season you cross the swimmers' strip only in a launch corridor, or straight out with the motor off (art. 59, para. 3).
  • A business that offers rides answers for its boards' safety and, where required, carries liability cover that extends to the rider (art. 58, para. 3).

The summer layer comes from bathing ordinance no. 39/2025 of 19 May 2025. From 09:00 to 19:00 the sea within 200 m of the coast, or 100 m of cliffs, belongs to swimmers (art. 3, para. 1), well inside the eFoil chapter's 300 m line.

Isola Bella has its own text, ordinance no. 116/2009 of 16 September 2009. Zone B has a 7 knot limit; Zone A allows no navigation under sail or motor (art. 1), except a crossing at minimum speed through the two corridors north and south of the islet (art. 2). Zone A also bans fishing, anchoring and mooring, and Zone B rules out scuba diving. We read this as water for a look from the board with a school; it is no place to practice turns.

Italian law under both ordinances

No national text names the eFoil. The nautical code, Legislative Decree no. 171 of 18 July 2005, lets boards “with or without their own propulsion” and without CE marking go up to one mile out (art. 27, para. 3c) and leaves their use to the local maritime authority (para. 6). Counting an eFoil as such a board is our interpretation. Paragraph 6 is the reason Palermo and Messina each write their own rules.

Article 39 asks for a boating license beyond six miles, on any jet ski, and within six miles above 30 kW (40.8 CV), naming no electric motor; how that applies to an eFoil is our reading, since the code never says. Below those thresholds a small craft's driver must be 16 (art. 39, para. 3b). Motorised pleasure craft need third party liability insurance under Legislative Decree no. 209 of 7 September 2005 (art. 123, para. 1), which we read as covering an eFoil, so a rider with their own board asks an insurer first. For Italy's other coasts and lakes, see eFoil in Italy, and for how countries treat the board in general, our eFoil rules guide.

This is a plain-language summary of the texts, with our readings marked as ours. It is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I eFoil in Sicily?

At Mondello near Palermo with Water Experience, on the Taormina coast with Foil Taormina or Sicily Jet Surfing, and at Verdura Resort near Sciacca with Sealosophy.

Is there eFoiling in Taormina?

Yes, with two schools. Foil Taormina teaches from Mazzarò on Fliteboards, starting with a €200 beginner course, while Sicily Jet Surfing rents Lift and Waydoo boards by the hour from €100. Both publish their sites in Italian, so ask for an instructor who speaks English when you book.

Can I eFoil at Mondello beach in Palermo?

Yes. Water Experience runs a one hour session with an instructor for €160, two people at most, from a meeting point on Viale Regina Elena. You book it on an English page with an online calendar.

Do I need a license to ride an eFoil in Sicily?

Italian law asks for a boating license beyond six miles, on any jet ski, and above 30 kW (Legislative Decree 171/2005, article 39), and names no electric motor. The code never mentions eFoils; our reading is that a school's board ridden inside one mile falls under none of those cases. Around Taormina, Messina's rules add a minimum age of 16, a buoyancy aid and a demonstration lesson. This is our reading, not legal advice.
